Common sense Resolutions.
The black democratic state com
mittee of Tennessee, at its meeting in
Nashville last week, adopted resolu
tions which contain a good deal of
common sense. One of the resolu
tions is that northern republicans, by
their bloody shirt speeches, are making
the.race problem in the south more
S ; to settle, and another is that
t thing the blacks can do is to
i sympathy with the whites.
Some of the blacks, at least, have a
reasonable amount of common sense.
They are beginning to understand that
the blacks who look upon their white
neighbors as enemies are making a
mistake. They see that the cnly use
the republican party has for them is
to keep itself in power. They do not
find that the blacks at the north have
any advantages which they do not
have, and they cannot discover that
there is any less race prejudice in the
north than in the south.
If the southern blacks will study
carefully the position which the blacks
iiilthe north occupy they will reach the
conclusion that the republican party,
in professing sympathy for the blacks
ot the south, is not sincere. The
nbrthern blacks are not placed in im
portant offices; even in states where
they cast many thousands of votes,
and their privileges are no greater
than those of the blacks in the south.
Why, then, should the southern blacks
adhere to the republican party, wheD
they have nothing to gain by doing so
and a great deal to lose?
Th# resolutions of the black demo
crats of Tennessee will attract atten
tion, in all probability, among the
blacks in all portions of the south.
They will give some of them who think
at all something to think about, and it
the result of their thinking is what it
ought to be, their attachment to the
republican party will be greatly dimin
ished.—Ishmaelite.

Youth’s 'Companion.
A man was arraigned in an Arkan

a young pig out of his neighbor’s pen,
said pig; or shoat, being alleged to be
worth a dollar and a half.
The evidence was conclusive, and
the jury, after a brief retirement,
brought in the verdict, “Guilty of
hog stealing in the first degree.”
fiThe judge remarked that the find
ing -was proper enough, except that
ik’faUcd to assess the value of the pig,
and further, that there were no de
grees in hog stealing. He must ask
the jury to retire again, and bring in
a verdict in due form.
The jury went out, and with pen,
ink and paper, but were badly non
plussed over that word “form.”
Finally one of them, who had form
erly been a justice of the peace, drew
up a document to which the other
eleven assented, and with which all
hands returned to the court room.
This was the verdict:
