Look out for long winded speecht

The republicans can’t agree on
silver bill. And the people can
agree with the republicans.
Dr. J. 15. S. Holmes is on trial in

The trial excites deep interest.

Sunday. This is a new route to At

as the present one.
The great carpenters stike in Chi
cago continues. Building operations
are at a stand still, and thousands and
thousands of mechanics are idle,
The situation is growing serious
The Pan-Americans dined the pres
ident, members of the cabinet and
other prominent gentlemen, at the
Arlington, on Wednesday evening
The president made a short speech.
The question of the establishment
of an oil mill and a guano factory will
be decided by the Alliance-men of
Thomas county, at their mass meeting
on the ist day of May.
It is said f at the Southern Cadets
will go to Kansas City to meet the
Houston Light Infantry, in the great
interstate drill which is to come off in
that city early in May.
The condition of the tariffbill b.ing
pached up by the republicans is des
cribed as being “wobbly.” That
about expresses it. There is a veiy
perceptible wobble all along the re
pulican lines,
Caprivi, the new German chancel or,
made his first speech, in opening the
Prussian diet, on the 15th. The
speech was well received. It is gen
eraily thought, however, that Bis
marck's shoes are seveial sizes too
large for him.
In his speech on the Montana elec
tion case 01 Wednesday, Senator
Turpie, of Indiana, referred to the
Montana canvassing board as ‘‘a triple
coil of adders,” composed of "a chief
justice from Verulam, a secretary
from Sodom and a governor from Go
morrah.”
Ah Thera!
The ‘‘color line” is still a trouble
some matter in the strong Republican
state ol Kansas. In the town of
Olathe, in that state, a colored girl
applied to Judge Burns for a manda
mus to compel the board of education
to admit her to a public school with
the white children. The judge yes
terday granted the mandamus, but
the board will appeal to the suprgpc
court, so great is the prejudice on
account of color in that state—the
state of J^hn J. Ingalls.—Ex.
Will Mrs. Canfield please give her
attention to this ? Black heels do not
appear to be on white necks, as that
lady wished to see from a hole in the
sky, even in bleeding Kansas.
The Savannah Daily Times pithily
remarks:
"One of the interpretations of good
given to recent Western cyclones is
<tbat they seem to have played havoc
with Republican majorities. If so,
it (hows the care of Providence for
the political welfare of the people, and
determination to. rebuke sin in high
place*."
New York, April 16.—A special to
the Herald from Syracuse, N. Y., says
that the announcement is made there
of the bethroa! of Miss Winnie Davs,
daughter of the late Jefferson Davis
to Al'rcd Wilkinson, of Syracuse, a
grandson of the great abolitionist lead
er, Rev. Samuel J. Law. Mr. Wil
kinson is a young lawyer, is but 28
years of age and stands very high in
the community. He first met Miss
Davis on the occasion of the visit of
that lady to Syracuse about four years
ago. It will be remembered that Miss
Davis received a very cool reception
from one or two families in Syracuse,
and this treatment is said to have
brought Iter and Mr. Wilkinson in
very close relations. He resented the
coolness shown her and gallantly
championed her cruse. The friend
ship thus engendered between them
blossomed intu love in due time
Some two months ago Mr. Wilkinson
went to Europe to see Miss Davis,
and spent several week? with her on
the continent. The actual time for
the \veddin„ lias not been set, but it is
understood that the date will be in the
near future.
All of this Southland of ours will
join in wishing for winsome Winnie
Davis,the "Child of the Confederacy,
long years of married bliss.
The Defunct Bucket Shops.
Coi.UMtius, G.v, April 16.—Mana
gcr ii. C. P.ckett of the Columbus
Stock Exchange returned to-day from
Americus, and soon after his arrival
was arrested, under a warrant charg
ing him with cheating and swindling
Later in the day he was carried before
a magistrate and put under a $300
bond to appear lor a preliminary trial
Friday morning. The bond was
promptly given. I.ate this afternoon
five other warrants were sworn out
against bin,, and he was arrested
again, and to-night is under the care
of the deputy sheriff. To-morrow
he will lie carried belorc a magistrate
again.
Manager McDonald, of the Ameri-
cus bucket shop, who was arrested
here yesterday, was carried back to
Americus to-day by, officer Cobb.
The margins due to Columbus men
by the exchange here only amount
to about $3,100, and that is what they
are after.

Democrats all over the country can
well rejdic^ over the results in Rhode
Island. For years that State has suf
fered from the most unjust laws regu

bery has been rampant. An honest
and free vote and a fair count, to
gether with the popular protest against
the continuation of the war taxes and
the oppression of the masses for the
benefit of classes, has turned the scale.

Vote for tho Presbyteries.
New York, April 15.—The Inde
pendent of this week gives the returns
ol the vote of 126 presbyteries of the
Presbyterian cnurch on the revision
of the confession of faith. These re
turns show that eighty two presbyte
ries liave voted in favor of revision,
forty against evision, and lour have
refused to vote. There are yet sixty-
six presbyjerics to be heard from, and
the indications arc, says the Indepen
dent, that the vote in favor of revision
will be nearly, if not quite, two thirds
of ali the presbyteries.
Butte Goes Democratic.
Butte, Mont., April 13.—An elec
lion was held here yesterday for seven
aldermen and mayor. The democrats
won the victory. The only issue be
fore the people was whether they sus

board in throwing out precinct 34 in
the late state election. The election
was under the Austrian law and
proved a success. The city was very
quiet.
