CONDEMNING PROPERTY.
How the Jury Priced Thomas-
yille Dirt.
Promptly at 10 o’clock yesterday
morning, ft jury consisting of Messrs.
Robert Alexander, Walter Williams,
George Carroll, F. 5^ Lobnsteiu, A.
A. Cassidy and Robert E. Lester, met
at the court house to pass upou the
raluo of various pieces of city prop
erty asked for by the G. S. & F. Ry,
for right of way and terminal laoili
ties within the corporation.
After being sworn in, the jury pro
cecdcd to business. A number of
witnesses were examined as to tiie
value of each piece of property. The
following gentlemen testified, touch
ing these values: Messrs. Fearn, Mai
lette, PI. W. Hopkins, Fallis, T. C.
Mitchell, W L, Ball and Judge Alex
auder.
There were some, though no very
great differences of opinion expressed
(under oath) by these gentlemen, ns
to the, value of the property. The
Adams lot was the first to lie
passed upon. After retiring for a
short time, flie jury returned and an
nounced, us their decision, that-the
lot was worth $3,000.
This was a pointer. Every one
knew then that the lots would he rat
ed at full valuations.
Next a verdict was rendered touch
ing the Smith lot adjoining the Adams
let. This, with a slip 100 lect wide,
and 197 lect long .running hack of the
Isaiah Dekle lot, and parallel with the
right of way of the S. F. & W. Ry,
was valued at $2,000. The jury said
the damage to Mr. Redden Smith,
would be $2,000, and to Mrs, J. L,
Finn’s lot, $750.
This closed the condemnatory pro
ceedings, as prices had been agreed
upon for the balance of the property
touched.
Mr. A. T. McIntyre represented
the Adams estate, Messrs. Ilansell &
Merrill the Smith estate, and ilessrs.
Snodgrass & Hawkins, and Hon. Ar
thur Patten, the railroad.
Quite a number of interested spec
tators witnessed the proceedings.
The jury have acted in good faith
to all parties at interest, saying, upon
their oaths, to the best of their belief,
what is the actual value of each piece
of property. The awards, so far as we
have leursed, are satisfactory, hotli to
the owners, and the represntatives of
the road. However it makes but lit
tle difference with the latter, as the
people of Tliomusville have to foot
the hills. Now let the work on the
road begin at the earliest possible day.
The proposition of the road has been
complied with, and everything is iu
shape, except a few isolated and minor
instances where the right of way will
have to he condemned.

Another Big Deal—Country
Property Booming—And
the End is Not Yet.
Yesterday Thomasvtlle tcored
another big sale; rather the countv did,
for the properly sold lies five miles
from town. Mr. Samuel L. Hayes,
as administrator of the estate of the
late Dr. S. A. Jones, sold to Mr. C. M
Chapin of New Jersey, the [ones farm
on the Duncanville road, containing
about thirteen' hundred acres, for ten
thousand dollars. It is a valuable
piece of properly, tne cleared land in
a high state ot cultivation, and the
remainder of it covered with valuable
virgin pine lorests. Tins sale shows
that, not only is real estate advancing
in value in town, hut that the magic
touch of capital and progress is bring
ing into prominence, and largely in-
Teasing values, all properly within a
radius ol several miles of the town.
Watch suburban property; it is going
—u.ward.
"Killed With A Stick.
About S o’clock, on Wednesday
night, Walker Conley hit Jonas Pat
terson with a slick, at a logging camp,
some two or three miles from Ochlock-
onee, from ihc effects of which l’at-
t rson died in a co .ple of hours. Both
were employed by Mess. Beverly and
Burch, to cut logs for thor saw null
near the place. Coroner Johnson
empannelled a jury, ol which Mr. E.
11. Whiddon was foreman, yesterday,
and held an nquest i n the deceased.
Dr. J. G. Hopkins made an examina
tion of the fractured skull. The jury
returned a verdict of murder, charging
Conley ith the crime. He has es
caped hut is being looked for. Both
parties are negroes. The man killed
is represented to have been a good
hand and was very much liked by his
employers. No reasons were brought
out at the inquest lor the killing.

ABOUT A HAT.
—K—_
A nice hat is a necessity to every

indicates refinement and intelligence ;
it conveys lasting impressions nnd is
first noticed ; it is beauty matched with
beauty, not rivaling, but adding each
to the other^gAs the setting to a ring
