Governor Gordon and the Alliance.
The letter of Governor Gordon,
xvitli its hroad and general endorse
ment of the Farmers Alliance, has
Lecn much commented upon, and
Jrcquently misunderstood.
Of course, if, with the same specific
questions presented, Governor Gordon
had returned a sweeping endorsement
,if and concurrence with the positions
assumed by the alliance, the horizon
would have been considerably dar
kened for the aspirations of those
.jongressmen, who have frankly dis
sented from certain views of the alii
ancc and given their reasons for
diflercucc in elaborate letters. The
absolute endorsement of Gordon—the
next Senator—would have left the
dissent cf representatives somewhat
bald and ungraceful.
It will be noticed, however, that
the governor’s letter, noble, patriotic
nnd generally concurrent as it is, does
not touch or discuss the sub Ireasuiy
plan and the assumption of govern
ment control over railroads and tele'
graphs ("essential issues in the Alli
ance policy), but -contents itself with
hearty approval of the broad general
principles of -the Alliance platform,
upon which Mr. Cleveland has recent
ly written vigorous endorsement, and
from which no truly patriotic citizen
can dissent.
The Alliance representative did not
ask Governor Gordon for specific
expression upon these points, and the
letter of our Governor that is, and ol
our Senator that is to be, simply en
dorses what Mr. Cleveland endorses,
and what every good citizen must en
dorse.—Tribune of Home.
INot a Woman.
A cure for stammering has been
discovered. It cousists in keeping
silent for ten days, then speaking in
whispers for ten days more and finally
returning to the ordinary voice grad
ually.
Of course it will be readily com
prehended by the most casual and
careless reader, that this cure only
applies to men. The idea of a woman
keeping silent ten days has never
iutcrcd iuto the heads of those who
indulge in the wildest fancies, or
speculate upon the most improbable
things. >
The Contrast.
To the honor of the South it may
he said that in not a single locality
was the decoration of the graves of
Confederate soldiers made the occa
sion for abuse of the North, or any
expression of sectional bitterness. An
unpleasant contrast to this feeling of
generosity and forgiveness was pre
sented last Friday when various Dec
oration day orators in the North
spoke in wrath and bitterness of the
people of a section of this rc-unitcd
country. These speeches do not pro
voke any desire on the part ot the
.South to reply in kind. We do not
want to he disgraced by producing
the counterpart of Ingalls and the
jackal politicians ot his class.--Tele
graph.
whom had sent him a letter, asking
if ho would support the sub treasury
plan. Mr. Clements in his reply
declined to support that measure.
We take the following from the
j press report of the meeting:
j •‘During the past few days there
has been much talk of Felix Corput
running for congress. Mr. ( lements
getting word of it, came home, ami
today spoke before the alliance at
the city hall. So crowded was the
bmldinS that the crowd could not all
enter. After stating a lew of his
reasons Mr. Corput arose, and n lively
colloquy occurred. Mr. Corput left
after awhile, and some of the ainii
coco. Mr. C lements spoke of the
mi justice to other classes, and the
fraud and corruption it would (level
op. There is no parallel between this
demand and the whisky hill. Ilf
cared not whether Corput or he, or
any other man went to congress on
this issue. He was the farmers’
friend, and had always voted for
them, but this measure was a had one.
Mr. Clements was greatly applauded,
and stands unshaken in the confidence
and respect of the alliauceincn.”
The alliancemen, it seems, will
stand by Clements.

The Mail Contract.
Mr. W. II. Bland has secured the

To those who are acquainted with Mr.

A Good Showing For the South.
The first returns of the census, a
summary of which we published yes
terday, arc decided)^' favorable for the
south. They were the returns of state
indebtedness, and show within the last
decade the southern states have made
a larger decrease of their bonded debts
than that ol all the other states of the
Union aggregated. Their decrease
has amounted to $28,022,964, while
that of all the other states is $26,436,-
920. For a section so recently devas
tated by war, left utterly penniless ex
cept in the possession of its real estate,
with its labor demoralized and its in
dustries all prostrated, this is a splen
did showing. It speaks loudly in praise
of the indomitable energy and pluck
of a people thus circumstanced and
made to pay heavy tribute to other
sections, in invidious taxes on its cotton
and tobacco and contributions for the
pensioning of northern soldiers.—

The Davis Fund
Judge \V. L. Calhoun, Treasurer
of the Davis fund, has made a report
of the moneys collected in Georgia to
Gov. Gordon. Georgia contributes
$7,032,35 to the widow and orphan
of Jeff Davis. The money lias been
forwarded to Mrs. Davis, ami here is
the acknowledgment by that lady :
Beauvoii: House, May 29, 1800.
■W. L. Calhoun, Treasurer, etc.—
My Dear Sir: Your letter enclosing
,(132.35 received, and I have trans
ferred the amount to I. M. Payne, to
be invested in the Davis Laud com
pany stock. I did not expect the
tuck to inure to my family, hut ac
cept it with my sincere tlmnks for the
ind feeling which prompted the gift.
The love which Georgia lias always
expressed for my husband, nnd the
cheer which that love shed upon his
declining years, has always been a
source ot gratitude to Ins wife and
daughters. Host assured that we
value this heritage as of greater
worth than any other gift you could
offer. Believe 111c, dear sir, yours
respectfully.
V. Ji:in:iisi>N Davis.

amounts received from ouch agent,
and Capt. Hobert G. Mitchell is

amount reported from any one point.
Baltimore to Sell its Stock.
Bai.timote, June 1.—Councilman
Malony, from the joint standing com
mittee ot ways and means, reported
hack in the city council to-night an
ordinance authorizing the sale by the
finance commissioners of the city’s
32,500 shares of Baltimore and Ohio
common stock.
This is, perhaps, the beginning of
the end. The Garretts and the city
of Baltimore have always controlled
the great corporation. It is thought
that the Hichmond Terminal people,
guided by John Inman, will soon con
trol the system.
