The temperature in the political
arena in Georgia, has risen several
degrees since Col. Hardeman announ
ced himself for governor. The cam
paign promises to be a lively one.
Mr. Hanlon, of the Quitman Press,
one of the leading allianceman of
Brooks county gives this advice to the
order, in his last issue:
“No sub-alliance should indorse any
candidate for office. Snch indorse
ment will most surely lead to dissen-
tions, which will be difficult to heal.
John L. Davenport, of New York,
the man who has done more to pros
titute the ballot than any living one
has been called in by the republicans
to help frame an election law for the
south. Davenport is a disreputable
politician, a boodlcr, a buyer of bal
lots, and everything else which is !oul
in politics. And this is to help frame nleans ln
a law to govern southern elections.
Lawyers will appreciate one sen
tence in the address of Capt. John G.
McCall, to the voters of Brooks county,
announcing himself as a candidate lor
the legislature. He says:

perfecting of this is now occupying their
attention.
To a Chronicle reporter lie stated that am
ple capital was behind the new company and
that it had horn promised one of the strong
est financial combinations in the country.
The work of organizing jiut consummated
has been going on for eight mouths.
To the question of what connection* or
co-operations were contemplated toward the
north he stated that just what was under
advisement could not he revealed.
Work will begin immediately toward
Wadley and Tlionuisviile.—Augusta Chron

The above will be interestiug read
ing to the people of this section.
The building of the A. & W. F. means
more for our city than can be seen at
a glance. It will make Thomasville
the crossing point of two great trurk
lines, and will open a new and direct
route to the east. We have said noth
ing of the benefit the bringing of local
trade from along the line will be, be
cause the utilization of that benefit
will depend 'largely on the business
men of the town In the light of the
past and present it will not do to take
into consideration the enterprise and
push they will show in the matter.
Gallant Tom Hardeman.
Speaking of the candidacy of Col.
Hardeman, the Tribune of Rome says :
“Gallant old Tom Hardeman, with
genial manners and silver speech, and
blameless record, will make a picture-
esque and popular figure in the guber
natorial race—but lie enters to t late
for a reasonable hope ol success.
Northen has won this fight before the
election. lie has won it fairly and
honorably and deserves the crowning
laurels of a diligent and incorruptible
canvas of fifteen months. It is scarce
ly possible'that any man this side of j
General Gordon could cut Mr. Northen
out of the governorship now.”
The general opinion is that Col. I
Hardeman has come out loo late to J
make a successful run against Mr. ;
Northen.

Not Much They Won’t.
That rabid republican sheet, the St.
Louis Globe-Democrat, 6ays: “The
farmers of the South can well aflortl
to let the weeds grow in their fields
while they devote their time to the
work of defeating democratic candi
dates for office.” This sentiment is
intended for the allianeemen, whom
the Globe-Democrat fancies to he ar
rayed against the straight democracy.
Nothing would please the republi
cans so well, ns to see the alliance
movement result in restoring carpet
bag rule in the south, by crippling
the democratic party.

It Won’t Work.
The republicans are using every
their power, to get the
support of the alliance. The Globe
Democrat, what a misnomer, one of
the strongest republican papers in the
west, says:
“All the country asks ol the alliance
is that it will defeat enough democrats
in the southern states to give the re
publicans thirty or forty majority in
and dependent largely on the soil for ] the next house.” This hope was sad-
my support,” etc.
This is pretty hard on the legal
profession. But it’s very popular now-
adays for a man to say that he de
pends largely upon the soil for a
support.
Sauare Talk.
The Quitman Press, says:
“It is said that every congressman
in Georgia who does not endorse the
sub treasury scheme is to be opposed
by the alliance. A congressman who
would endorse such a plan ought to be
opposed by everybody. The editors
ol the Press are allianeemen, and yet
they do not hesitate to say that, if
Hon. Henry G. Turner should an
nounce that he favored the sub treas
ury bill, the paper would oppose him
as vigorously as it would any other
avowed enemy of the people.”
There is no danger that Mr. Turner
will endorse the plan, in fact, he has
announced against it.
Iv blighted by the result of the Kolb
contest in Alabama. That was signifi
cant of the underlying sentiment of
the alliance in the south. The Nash
ville American truly says:
' The farmers oi the south are above
all else democrats. They are white
men and believe in a white man’s
party. They arc not a great organiza
tion for the purpose of wrecking the
democratic party. They have organ
ized in order to get at a common view
of the situation, and in order to give
emphasis to their demands. They
will succeed, but it will be only by the
success of the democratic party. The
democratic party is their hope of
everything desirable, their protection
and guarantee against legislation wick
edness and in the interest of classes
