ALBERT WINTER, Bill. IYlnn.
The weather is getting mighty hot
in Washington.
Between the grass and candidates
the farmers are. kept pretty busy
those days.
The democrats have Reed in the
nine hole, on the silver bill. He
tried a bit of smuggling but got
caught.
If Blaine keeps up his fight on the
tariff and the federal election bill, he
will be a very respectable member of
society again.
The federal election bill will be
taken np this week. It will provoke
some bittor speeches on both sides
Wc hope the South will not lose her
temper. She needs a cool, clear
head, just now.
The mule is fast giving way to
electricity as a motor for propelling
street cars. The emancipation of the
mule has been looked forward to with
deep interest for a long time. The
day of his deliverance appears to
be at hand.

waters of the (lilion and Hiddekel will
make the fountain of the temple,
Larks, robins and goldfinches will
chant the wedding march. Violet
lily ar.d tose burning inctnsein the
morning sun. Luxuriant vines sweep
ing their long trails through the forest
aisle—upholstery of a spring morning,
Wild beasts standing outside the circle
looking on, like family servants from
the back door gazing upon the nup
rials; the eagle, king of birds: the
locust, king of insects; the lion, king
of beasts, waiting. Carpet ol grass
like emerald lor the human pair to
walk on, Hum ol excitement, as
there always i; before a ceremony.
Grass blades and leaves whispering
and the birds a chatter, each one
his male. Hush, all the sounds
Hush, all the birds. Hush, the
water- - , for the king of the human
race advances, with his bride. Perfect
man, leading to the altar a perfect
woman, nod. her father gives away
the bride, and the angels are witnesses,
and tears of morning dew stand in the
blue eyes of the violets. And Adam
rakes the round hand, that has never
been worn with work or stung with
pain, into hts own stout grasp and
says ; “'This is now bone of my bone
and flesh of my flesh.” Tumuhs ol
joy break forth and all the trees of the
wood clap their hands, and all the
galleries of the lorest sound with carol
and chirp and chant, and the circle of
F.denic happiness is complete; for
while every quail hath answering quail,
and every fish answering fish, and
every fowl ans a cling fowl, and every
beast of the forest a fit companion, at
last, man, the immortal, has for mate,
woman, the immortal.

Three cheers for Gov. Nichols, of
Louisiana. The lottery people can
neither bully nor buy him. The
whole country is backing the plucky
governor against the lottery men.
The blot ought to be wiped out in
Louisiana.

Up to the inauguration of melon
shipments, North, the feeling between
the two sections, many thought, was
growing better; but we very much
feftr that many good impressions of
the south will be lost, as Col. Fluker
rolls in his hammock, and cusses the
man who sent that green watermelon
up north. The breach is, again
widening.
San Salvador Startled.
Sax Salvador June 23.—Presi
dent Mcnendez died sudddeuly last
night soon after the conclusion of the
banquet giveu on the occasion of the
fifth anniversary of the entrance of
Mcnendez into San Salvador aud the
defeat of the Zaldivar faction.
During the panic caused by the
president’s death, Gen. Marcial and
several others were killed at the bar
racks. Gen. Carlos Ezetoa, leader of
the forces, is now in command. All
is quiet at present.
Mizell Confirmed.
Washington June 23.—The Sen
ate to day confirmed the nomination
if John R. Mizell to he collector of
customs at Pensacola.
No 'respcctacle administration or
party would have confirmed ,a |mau
with Mizcll’s rccond.
Tanner and the Surplus.
The New York World thinks that
Tauner’s cry of “God help the sur
plus’ would not avail just now, as
there is no longer any surplus to help.
Tlmt recalls a very ancient story:
‘•Mamma,” said the little boy, "can
God do everything?’’ “Yes, my
child.’’ Well, I don’t see how he
could make Billy Johnson’s mouth
any wider without moving his cars.”
—Cincinnati Enquirer.
Friend—"Wcffi Ethel, how do you
like married life ?’’ Ethel (enthusias
tically)—'"It’s simply dclighttul.
We’ve been married a week, and have
had eight quarrels, and I got the best
of it every time.”
It Pays to Lower Rates.
The Kennesaw Gazette, the official
organ of the W. A A. R. R. speaking
ottheir last month’s business says:
“The total passenger receipts for
May just passed were three thousand
dollars greater than fer May, 1889,
and were greater than those of any
May since the time the road was leas-
to the present company,,’which was in
the latter part of 1870.
When it is considered that up to the
1879 the company received 5 cents
per mile on its passenger traffic, and
that for the next year or so it received
4 cents per mile, thence up to 18SS 3
cents per mile as its local rate.”
Much of the business was done so
says the Gazette, upon commutation
tickers at one cent and less per mile.
It will be remembered that the man
agement sometime ago, put their local
fare down to 2I cents per mile. This
is just half what they used to get, and
yet their income is greater under the
lowest rate ever given, than it was
under the highest rate ever charged
There is a lesson in this for ratl:-
roads.
Chicago’s Population.
Chicago, Ills., June 23.—Super
visor ol the Census Gilbert, man inter
view, says that the returns already in
show that the population ol Chicigo
exceeds 1,000,000. How much be
yond the million point the total will
run Supervisor Gilbert would not
venture to say. except that it would be
considerable. The ciy, he added,
had certainly doubled its population in
a decade, and it was a fight between
Chicago and Philadelphia for second
place on the list of American cities.
Will Have to Eat Circus Bills-
At last the free traders have lound
their strongest argument against a
duty on tin. It is claimed that the
McKinley bill will make the pi ice of
metal so high that poor families can
no longer afford to feed their goats on
tin cans.

An illu»trated|articlc in the Consti
tution, entitled “My'Lady’s .Stocking
—How She Puts ft On,” has caused
Dr. Hawthorne, the great Baptist di
vine to denounce tlmt and similar
newspaper articles. A special to the
Telegraph, says:
Dr. Hawthorne, after exculpating
the proprietors and managers of the
paper which gave this interesting doc
ument to the public on account of
their undoubted Christian character,
shakes up the printer’s devil and oth
er small fry of the Constitution office
in a manner which, it is to be hoped,
will in the future teach them a valua
ble lesson.
Dr. Hawthorne should have spared
the smaller fry and printers ; let him
hurl his indignation at the heads of
those in authority, not shielding them
front the responsibility on account of
their “undoubted Christian charac
ter.”
