The Crop Outlook
Tlie subject of most interest just
now, with tlie country at lar,;e, is the
crop outlook.
It overshadows, even, the impor
tance of politics, and the rattle and
jungle of statesmen as they discuss
tariff, silver and election bills in the
halls, lobbies and caucus rooms
the national legislature.
There is quite a contrast of opinion
as to the outlook in our county
man will say his cotton crop is fine
but corn is poor. Another will say
his corn is good nnd his cotton poor,
Still nuother will say that his crops
arc better all round, than they cv
were, or poorer, all around, than they
ever were.
Boiling down these contradictory
opinions the situation appears to be
about as follows Those farmers that
had stands of cotton up before the
dry weather of May have good crop:
those that planted after the rniu hav
had a severe tussle with the grass,
which come up at the same time, as
the cotton, and which fostered and
encouraged by frequent showers, has
thriven well. Corn that missed the
freeze is good, corn that was caught
by the freeze in March is not so good
In sonio sections of the county
crops arc unusually promising,
other sections they arc hardly up to
medium. The conclusion of the
whole matter is that the general
average is nbout up to the usual stall'
dard, and if sen*ons ate propiticui frem
now, there is no reason why the crop
of lttyO will not be as good as w
have had for years.
Melon Movements
The markets arc sullcring, just now
from heavy sliipraents of green and
inferior melons. There is one impor
taut lesson growers must learn before
the business will dcvclopc into as
much of a success, as it can be made,
and thnt i ?, that poor melons are not
marketable anywhere. All of the
good the exchange could possibly do
will be thoroughly nciitralkiod by the
disastrous effect that come from the
shipment of poor stock. The melon
markets, and the same is true of all
other markets, after they have been
broken down once, arc slow to rccov-
and indeed they nevor fully get
over the disastrous effects of early de
pression.
Mass
A Democratic Mass Meeting.
It is likely thnt a mass meeting of
the democratic voters of the county
will l)e called to meet :tt the court
house iu this city, .Saturday, July 12,
to decide on the methods by which
nominations for membe rs of the Gen
eral Assembly- and othi ;roffices will he
made. Our county is. committed by
precedent at least to p rim ary elections,
as affording the surest and best way to
secure the choice of >Jic people. It is
especially desirable jpist now, that the
wishes of the people he rejected in
the choice of standard hearers of the
party. When the mass meeting as
sembles, its first business will be the
election of a new executive commit
tee.
Mr. Ed Ward, a Thomasvillc hoy,
but now with the Georgia Florida <fc
Southern nt Macon, is in tlie city
visiting his parcntH.
The ingredients that nre used in
making Shepard’s B. B. Cologne are
the most expensive in the world, and,
therefore, it caunqt he sold as cheap
as some others.
Selling at Lost.
Messrs. L. Steyermnn ifc Bro,, an
nounce this morning, in no uncertain
tone, that they propose to sell their en
tire stock at cost, during the next 15
days. The stock embraces everything
that could he used by ladies or gentle
men, and is fresh and stylish. These
gentlemen buy to the best possible ad
vantage, nnd they are prepared to of
fer extraordinay inducements. Bead
their new ad for full particulars.
Of One Opinion.
There may be some things connect
ed with the experience of the Guards
during the encampment at Augusta,
concerning which there is differ
ence of opinion, hut there is oue mat
ter on which the Guards nre n unit.
They all agree that Cnpt. A. G. Mil
ler is a splendid drill officer, and a
thoroughly high-toned gentleman.
The City’s Population.
Over three hundred guesses have
been made at the population of the
city. The jar. was sealed up yester-
lay at noon, and will not be opened
until the population is announced.
Nearly all of the guesses arc between
four thousand live hundred nnd six
thousand, l’robably the highest
guess was 7,700. Guess who will get
tlie watch.
It will be some time before it can
be known who was the fortunate one
that guessed nearest to Thomasville’s
population, uud at the same time se
cured the handsome gold wntch, that
1ms been on exhibition at Thomas
drug store.
