crats carry the state again.

Mr. M. K. Northern, agent for the
Queen nnd Crescent route is in the
city. Ho is looking niter melons.
His headquarters are at Jacksonville,
and he is very popular with the pa
trons of his routo.
The festival by the ladies of St.
Thomas Church Guild last night,
was a success. Tiic ices were nice,
tho young ladies were charming and
tho public was satisfied. Quite a
snug sum wns realised.
Mr. F. A. Wallace, of the L. A N.
system, and working for shipments
via Montgomcryjor River Junction,

popular routes for fruit shipments to
western points.
Messrs L. Steycrman & Bro.,
bought 7,000 pounds of wool yester-
pay from Messrs Hubers and Murphy,
of Colquitt county. These gentlemen
realize dover 81500 for their clip, which
would seem to indicate that wool
growing pays in South Georgia.
The card of Gohlinghorst, Schley
& Co., commission merchants, Balti
more, appears this morniug. The
members of the firm are all young
men, thoroughly familiar with the
produce trade of their city. The
representative in this section, Mr.
W. S, Killingsworth, is active, cour
teous reliable.
Mr, N. E. Turner, chnirm in of the
Board of Road commissions of Thom-
asvillc distric, gives notice that all of
the roads of this district must be put
in thorough order by August *0th.
Mr. Turner is in thorough earnest,
and overscei3 will do well to govern
themselves by his notice. In a few
weeks crops will he out of the way,
and farmers will have a good oppor
tunity to look after the road.
The Other Side of the Question-
Home days since the Times-Entek-
i-iiise contained an article, in which
it was stated that Capt. George R. Mc-
Rce had used some very stiong lan
guage in reference toune of the agents
of the melon exchange or syndicate.
The article did not give the name
ot the house, hut it was generally un
derstood that the one referred to by
('apt. McRcc, was Mr G. L Law
rence, of New York. Mr. Nixon, Mr.
Lawrence's representative in this sec
tion, has furnished 11s with copies of
the account sales of the four cars that
gave Capt. McRcc so much dissatis
faction. They were sold from June
16th to 19th, ; and netted respectively,
88S, 8112, $140 and $149, which is an
averogp ofi8122.2C per car.
ItwouMUsoem that this 13 n very
fine average-price.
The TTmes-Extkrpiijse has noth
ing to do' with the merits of the dis
pute -dr* difference between Capt.
McRefc | and Mr. Lawrence ; it gave
tho news ttem because it was a part
of its busines to do so, and it now
gives Mr. Lawrence’s answer with
equally as much pleasure. Tins
much is said because the effort is
being |madc to make it appear that
we arc opposed to the melon exchange
pr syndicate.
This is not ease.
! We appreciate fully the good that
has been done by the exchange for
the growers, but we do not feel called
on for that reason to swallow, or
ignore what we consider were mis
takes that had been made by the men
in charge of the move.
The melon business is for longer
than one year, and any mistake made
now, will certainly affect the business
another season.
Three Hundred and Fifty Three
Guesses.
The guesses ut the city’s popula
tion have been checked off, and a list
put 011 exhibition at R. Thomas’ drug
store. Three hundred nnd fifty three
guesses were registered. The highest
one madu was 7,755. This gi.es*,
while made hv a gentleman who has
great faith that the population of our
city will ho a surprise, did not intend
making such a big 011c. One guess
was placed in by some one who failed
to write his or her mime, he is re
quested to come and state the number
so that lie may he credited with the
same.
It Has Come.
The machinery for the steam Laun
dry has come, and will he set in place
at once, and in a few days Thomas-
ville will have as complete a steam
Laundry as there is in the south.
The call and delivqry wagon has
come, and it is a beauty. Mr. Hon-
dersou, the superintendent, will use
every efioit to give our people satis
factory work and piiccs.
The accomodation freight due to
leave here for Chattahoochee at about
six o’clock in the afternoon, did not
leave until nearly two o’clock yester
day morning. This train has been
several hours late eveiy night nearly,
since tho melon season.
Mrs. H.G. McLendon left yesterday
for Athens, to visit friends and rela
tives. Mr. McLendon accompanied j
her as far as Macon. Later on he |
will join her nt Athens, and they will I
go to the mountains, or seashore, for j
the summer mouths.
Among the graduates in the 1890 j
law class of the State University at

Quite u had wreck occurred on the
Alabama Midland Ry., yesterday.

a small station 27 miles from Bain-
bridge. A freight train was wrecked,
and two bnkemcn, both white, were
killed. The cause of the accident
was not learned.
Found the Runaways.
A colored man wns in the city yes
terday looking for his four children,
who ran away from home Tuesday.
He lives nine miles from town, nnd
yesterday after having searched for
them since they left home, lie suc
ceeded in finding the runaways. The
eldest of the children, a girl told the
reporter a pitiful tale of a cruel step
mother, who heat and abused her
continuously. Although living with
in comparatively a few miles of the
city they had never boon here but
twice. Notwithstanding the cries of
the children,'they were placed in a ve
hicle and carried home, where their
father promir 1 he wtmld severely
punish them for running away;
Headquarters Moved.
Mr. A. A. Aveilhe, assistant su
perintendent of the S. F. & W. Ry-,
has moved his headquarters from \ al-
dosta to this city. A telegraph office
has been fitted up for him in the sec
ond story of the passenger depot, and
operator Bear placed in charge. Op
erator Folgcr hri been sent here to
assist day operator Hughson in the
main office. The toad is making ev
ery cfloit to handle the melons fs
speedily as possible, and taking into
consideration the volume of ship
ments, it is doing it as well as could
be asked.
To Pablo.
The sale ef excursion tickets to 1’a-
ilo Beach begins by the train that
caves this evening-at 6:35. The rate,
3 20 for the round trip, is quite low,
nd affords an opportunity to visit
*ablo Bench, one of the lim it in the
outh, nt a low cost. The tickets will
e good to return through Monday,
Oth iust. Coll on Mr. F. M. \ an
)yke, passenger agent at this place,
,nd he will take great pleasure in
;iving you full information about the
r'P-
A Special Melon Train.
The Alabama Midland Ry., sent
ut from Flint, Cnmilln, and other
loints on the Albany division, a spc-c-
il train of 31 cars of melons Wed no-
ay night. This is a heavy shipment
or 011c day, and shows that the
fidlnnd is coming to the front, as
ne of the popular route to Western
oints. Its advantages, being the
liort and the direct line, are hound
j give it a liberal share of business.
