A District Alliance Convention.
On Tuesday of last week, in obe
dience to a call issued by Capt, L O,
Jackson, president of the Decatur
county Alliance, a convention of the
counties of the 2nd congressional dis
trict met in Albany.
Mr. I. II. Hand, of Baker county,
was made chairman and Mr. G. W.
Crapps, of Clay county, was made
secretary.
Capt. Jackson delivered aa address
on the sub-treasury plau, which we
reproduce in full. The Timeu-Ex-
teisi'Rise is on record as opposing
the suh treamry scheme, because it
believes the plan would fail to benefit
the farmers, and because it regards
the move as impracticable. We are
willing, however, to believe the gen
tlemen that do favor the plan are
honest and sincere in their advocacy.
We recognize at the same time that
it is only by the agitation of measures
of relief that relief will come.
The TtMEs EsTKitritlsi: recognizes,
nisi that all of the national lcgiglation
since the war has been in timid sub
servience to the money power of the
country. Realizing theso truths it is
free to ..ee and confess the justice of
the'domamlof the producers, the furm-
ors, tor legislation that will promote
the interests of all classes. It very
rarely happens that relief comes pre
cisely in the way it is asked for, hut
a blind and uncomplaining obedience
only invites further exactions, and ns
we take it, this is the po-'ition the Al
liance occupies.
Capt. Jackson is a clenr headed
thinker and rensoner, and what he
says will command wide attention.
Read it carefully.
-An issue, ill the form of
a bill, for the relief of agricultural
depression, submitted to Congress liy
our Legislative Committee, and the
manner in which the same has been
criticised by the Representatives from
Georgia, invites our earnest nnd
thoughtful consideration.
It is an admitted fact by these rep
resentatives, that the oppression does
exist. At the same they repudiate
our measure of relief as unworthy of
their consideration, ami fail to present
a substitute.
The untenable attitude thnt they
occupy in relation to the bill has been
fully ventilated through the uusubsi
dized press and therefore it is not im
portnnt to refer to it.
It is sufficient to know that the
farming class is being pauperized by
legalized robbery, and it matters not
whether by the tariff, banking or
trusts, our representatives should have
the manhood to combat cither and all
of these evils.
But, forsooth, when a relief incisure
emanating from the people, is submit
ted, it is met and resisted by a caucus
of our own democratic representatives'
and judging from the objections they
urge against it, before they had in
vestigated the merits of the bill. We
arc given to understand, by the dis
courtesies shown our delegation, that
on account of our stupidity, we do
not know wlmt is best for us; nr must
wc assume that the adverse position
taken in regard to the bill a is their
subterfuge from the just indignation
ol a neglected constituency ?
A crisis is upon the country nnd if
it it is not met promptly nnd effectu
ally, wc may leave as a legacy to pos-
slavery. It is within the grasp of the.
agricultural class to avert this calam
ity, and they will doubtless do it if
they can be made to feel the import
ance of it. Hence the great respon
sibility that rests upon the better in
formed nf our order, for it becomes
their imperative duty to educate, by
patience and painstaking, the less in
formed in their duties nnd obligations
that the end may be fraught with
blessings of liberty and prosperity to
ail classes.
We could not contemplate a state
of affairs more appalling than the pic
ture in which the blood of Americans
is grappling with a moneyed oligar
chy which is now a menace to our free
institutions.
It may lie assumed that a more
conservative element will control the
next National Congress. If so, wlmt
measures of relief may the country
hope for? Will they too fumble with
the tariff while the people nrc being
robbed of their produce and homes?
No, not if such patriots as L. F. Liv-
ington are sent there. Wcnced such
men to represent us, as will give spe
cial attention to the interest of the
people, and not the one idea |>olitician
who despises the day of small things,
who makes a strike possibly once in
term for the gratification of a sordid
selfish ambition for national notoriety,
and recognizes only the newspaper
men as his constituency, whose pot
tngo for concessions of principle,
now nnd then nn Agricultural Report
and a few free garden seeds.
The jute trus f has made the use
of cotton bagging a necessity from
principle and I should regard the
abandonment of its use at this time ns
a most dangerous concession of that
principle. But it would not in any
degree be less so than the surrender
of the sub-treasury plan. While the
use of cotton bagging is a monument
over the grave of the jute trust, the
sub-treasury scheme foretells the
fate ot the infamous monetary system
of the country which threatens by
ceutralization the destruction of our
government.
I believe in pressing tbe sub trees
ury bill upon Congresi by every
available means and if it accomplishes
nothing more, it will magnify the un
just and discriminating financial sys
leni of the government.
It will show to the people that
while our representatives have been
fumbling at the spigot the main leak
has been at the bung, and that which
huit been regarded as the principal
issue, has been iu a great measure
decoy for our representatives.
No doubt the enormous tariff has
much to do with agricultural depres
slot), but it is not the main cause nnd
while tbe democrats have been mon
keying with conservatism and apply
ing reform ointment to Uncle Snm’s
tariff sore shin the great national can
ccr has eaten into the vitnls of our
government nnd threatens to destroy
it.
I hope thnt the brethren present
will express themselves freely and
fully upon the question of our repre
sentative in Congress, if wc should
deem it desirable to make a change,
take such action in the matter ns we
may uuite upon.”

THE SHORT LINE
Well, Let It Come.
Times-Exterprise :
Well, let Mr, Connell press his ne
gro pension bill. If the people nnd
the treasury are to be robbed at all
hazards, it will be a medium by which
tbe south can have neccss to at least a
part of the money she has been rob
bed of through protection, high tariff
and pension robberies. So let ’or roll,
and will some of our democratic
friends recommend a higher rate of
pension and a bigger bounty, and
at a younger age. I thiuk it is the
most charitable and humane step that
has been made by any republican
since the war. Hurrah for Connell,
and ilia negro pensiou bill.
J. R. S.
A Great Curiosity.
Mr. Abe .Simon, of Monticello, was
in,town yesterday. lie brought with
him one ol the most unique pipes in
all the world. A negro ploughed it
up in his field soon after the war.
It is an imraenso affair, and would
hold more tobacco titan the most in
veterate smoker would care to burn
at one time. The pipe is elaborately
carved, is made of some kind ofstonc,
though what race of people fashioned
or used it» is one the mysteries thnt
terity a condition of affairs worse thna 1 will never be solved.
