TO FLORIDA VIA AUGUSTA.
The Pennsylvania Road will be in
the System.
.%n|Cii*<ni>" I'lminlne for u Suit Nyatcm
fraui Ken York Tin Norfolk
nml Ninetjr.Mix.
Thu Carolina, Knoxville and West
ern railroad will he built.
It come* pretty straight tlint inoui-
cd people are in the field to purchase
the line from Robert Sibley. The
trouble seems to have been that in
grading the road, Mr. Sibley’s Con
struction company complied with the
demands of each township through
which they went tad expended the
moneys there subscribed. This has
left the road patchy—worked only in
disjointed sections. It is estimated
that the work done on the rond is
worth 82o0,000. The parties who
have about secured it will get it for
about half that figure, and altogether
8250,000 will give Augusta the lino
to Ninety-Six, S. C.
This will give Augusta a momen
tous connection. Nothing less indeed
than another line to New York. Au
gusta men are going to put the money
into it, and then ellect arrangements
with the Augusta and West Florida
railroad, and the result ol their stu
pendous scheme would see Pennsylva
nia railroad vestibule trains from
Now York to Florida going through
Augusta ami via Thornasville.
It looks like a big undertaking,
but this is the age of vast enterprises.
The Georgia, Carolina and North
ern railroad between Norfolk and
Atlanta has been successfully engin
eered by Gen. Iloke, and his system
—the Robertson —is an assured factor
in new railroad combinations At
Norfolk, where this line operates with
forty nine steam packets, connection
is made with the Pennsylvania road.
To secure a Florida connection it is
more than probable that this rond
would manage to cross the James
river. From there to Ninety-Six via
Raleigh is a direct route; using the
Robertson saystem. The manage
ment of the last named is in sympa
thy with the aim of Augusta parties
to open up Florida to the Vauder-
bills.
There is a strong sentiment in Au
gusta and West Florida circles look
ing towards the building of n branch
to Jesup and this would command
Eastern and Western Florida.
The Pennsylvania system has long
wished to get into the Florida busi-
ues South. They thought they had
an opening iu the Charleston aud
Savannah road, but the Plant system
was too quick for them, and so fur
have iilans perfected that through
schedules are talked of, nud it will be
no surprise it work is rapidly pushed
on the Augusta aud West Florida
road through which is promised the
of consummation of these projects.
This undertaking, intimation of
which Is all that can at preseut be re
vealed, is from a high authority.
But on its heels may come ere many
days, news of its perfection.
Then, too, the Augusta and Chat
tanooga rail road will take on un
wonted activity this fall. Those in
side arc working like braves on a
program that will sec work put on a
new footing speedily. — Augusta
Chronicle.

A Plea For Unity.
Editor Times-Enteri'SIsk :
I am a very conservative man, and
as such, wish to call the attention of
the public to an impending danger.
If the democratic party inside the al
liance, and the democratic party out
side the alliance, should fall out and
get into aa angry aud vituperative
contest about filling the various offices
with their particular and special fa
vorites, bad resuls may follow, which
neither wing of the party desire.
The alliance needs the democratic
party to carry out its wishes, and
give them operative vitality and effi
ciency in securing the measures of re
lief which the farmers so much need,
and the democratic party needs the
alliance to carry out its plans to de
feat the mischievous measures which
the republicans are trying to foist up
on the country, especially upon us ol
the south.
Now, if these two wings of the dem
ocratic pnrty should fall out and fight
each other, instead of fighting the
common enemy, neither would have
the power, unaided by the other, to
stay the hand of the common enemy;
and our beautiful southern land, in
stead of presenting a hold unbroken
front to the common enemy, would be
the prey of warring factions with itself
aud would necessarily become the
victims] of republican hate aud ven
geance.
The democratic party inside the al
liance, has all the ardor of youthful
freshness and vigor, and may unwit
tingly demand more of the general
public than it ought, and the pnrty
outside the alliance may not be will
ing to concede to them as much ns
they are entitled to Here lies the
danger. Let the thinking men of
both wings of the party take the mat
ter into careful and serious considera
tion, nnd sec that each lias its proper
aud legitimate share of public favor
and official promotion.
But above all, it is to lie hoped that
neither wing of the pnrty will put it
self in such antagonism to the other,
that they cannot come together when
the necessities of the country require
it. If the federal election bill now
peuding iu congress, and which may
possibly become law in the near fu
ture, shall be put upon us, it becomes
every southern! man to be in position
where ho enn most effectually nid in
the protection of our state rights, and
the individual rights of the citizen.
So let every body, be conservative,
cautious and' prudent.
