Quitman's population is said to be
about 2,000.

Georgia politics is red hot, and still
a heating. May the best men win.
it is said that the soldiers’ home
near Atlanta will be turned over to the
state.
Energy, invincible determination,
with a right motive, are the levers that
move the world.-—Noah Porter.
Georgia wants a legislature that will
work six days in a week, and members
who will not skylark around on free
passes.—Montezuma Record.
.Senator Sherman threatens to
retire to private life. The country
will probably survive the shock. The
temperature will rise in the senate
chamber.
The $500,000 required by the lease
act of the W. & A. R. R. has been
deposited with the treasurer of the
state. The lease will be formally
signed up on Monday.
——
Congressman Crisp has refused to
endorse the sub-treasury plan. He
fully, however, endorses the motto of
the alliance: “Equal rights to all
special privileges to none.”
The Quitman Press says: Quit-
man’s compress is going up in a hurry.
Don’t fail to bring your cotton to
Quitman if you want the top of
the market and from 1 to 1 more.
The original package matter is
bothering the courts a good deal.
Some of the lower courts do not pay
much attention to the decision of the
supreme court of the United States.

Ercd Myers carries the primary in
Leon Co., Fla., over Capt. Pat Hous
ton, for senator. The fight over the
two members of the lower house is
said to be very close. Frank Walker
is in it, and says "by ginny” he’ll get
there.
“Will you run the melon exchange
next year?” a Press man asked Mr. J.
R. Forrester the other.day, "I would
not go through what 1 have in the
past six weeks for 810,000 cash in
advance" was the reply.—Quitman
Press.
The bill making an appropropria-
tion to establish a national park on
Chickamauga battlefield, was passed
by the senate. This is a house bill,
and the president will sign the bill.
The amount appropriated is $250,-
Congressman Crain, ol Texas, is a
gunning in Washington for a news
paper correspondent. The aforesaid
quill man said that Crain was one of
the seven representatives absent with
out being paired, when an important
amendment, (that of I.chlbachs) to
the lorce bill was delealed by the
republicans. Mr. Crain should pocket
his little pistol and try to explain to
his constituents, who arc said to be
down', on him on account of his
negligence.
That was a brave and perilous act,
when two dauntless firemen climbed
a rope to the roof of the high building
of the Western Union Telegraph
office, in New York, on Friday, and
rescued seven persons. The great
buildittttrts on fire and the angry
fia|p|^jb|irst through the roof, a
moment sifter the gallant firemen had
rescued the party that was huddled
away up there, with death staring
them in the face. AH the heroes of
life are not in the higher walks of
life.
Plumbing the Line.
Rev J. M. Rushin lias writtin
another letter in regard to the race
for congress. He says :
I am an allianeeman. I very much
desire to set the p'an ol our order
adopted and our principles advanced,
and I cherish the hope that in the
near luture mor.- of our fellow-citizens
will see a necessity for an advance
along their lines.
But I ant also a democrat, and am
persuaded that just now the uni ed
efforts ol every member of this party
are necessary to successfully resist the
onslaughts ot the republican party
against home government, or the
right of each state to govern herself.
I think it would lie very unfortunate
for any division or dissension to occur
in the ranks r.ow.
I love my country and the alliance
principles too well to be a parly to
antagonize them. I therefore respect
fully decline the use of my name, and
will do what I can to preserve the har
mony of the party—our hope for the
present—and wait with patience for
the triumph of the principles of our
order—our hope for the future.
J. M. Rushin.
Guerry Not a Candidate.
The editor of the Times, on Thurs
day last, wired a mutual friend at
Dawson to enquire if Judge Guerry
was a candidate for congress. This
was two days after the alliance caucus
had endorsed him. This answer was
received:
“Guerry will accept if nominated by
the democratic convention. He does
not care to be placed in the attitude
of a candidate.”
Of course any aspiring young man
would accept a nomination for con
gress it tendered. This means that
Judge Guerry will r.ot make a canvass
for the nomination. He will not go
out on the hustings and discuss the
issues involved in this campaign. He
cannot be nominated^ unless he does
so, therefore he is practically not in
the race. The tide has set in for
Turner, and ludge C-qcrry is wise in
reserving his forces lor a more aus
picious opportunity. He is a talented
young man, and we are likely to hear
from him some of these days.—Val

Cheap Watermelons.
Chicago, July 17.—The statement
was published some weeks that a trust
had been formed on the Georgia
watermelon crop. Melons were ship
ped to agents in all large northern
cities, to be sold wholesale by auction
This plan did not suit the ideas of
local dealers in this city, and they
quietly formed a counter combination.
Accordingly, when the first Georgia
melons were put up for sale, there was
only one bid—a wickedly low one—
for the entire lot, and the melons had
to go at that. Then the purchaser
divided up the shipment with his
fellow-conspirators, and they charged
full prices to small dealers and the
public, thereby makiug immense
profits. The plan was adopted else
where, with the inevitable result of
smashing the melon trust. Georgia
melons arc now in a free market, with
two weeks run.
Albany a Railroad Center.
The contracts for the new road to
be built from Cordele to Albany have
been let for the building of the road,
and the work will be pushed. King
& Hannan, of Amcricus, have the con
tract for the grading, A. Coulter & Co.,
of Americus, for the bridges and tres
tles, and R. R, iV B. N. Stewart, of
Americus, lor the cross-tics. The com
pany has ordered 3,500 tons ot steel
rails of the Pennsylvania Steel Com
pany, to be delivered in August, and
it is expected to begin track laying by
Sept 1 and have the road completed
by Oct. 1. \V. \V. Campbell, chief
engineer, is now locating the line.
