Law and Fish.
This community, at least those who
have been buying fish caught in Flor
ida, and thoio who make occasional
raids on the finny tribe in lamnnec
lake, have been stirred up lat.-ly. The
report that a Florida law against sell
ing fish caught in Florida, or nilowing
■ion residents to tisli in Florida waters
was being cuforced in onr sister state,
was what caused tho ripple. Several
disciples of Izaak Walton, devotees of
rod and gun, liaviug heard llmt par
ties were nrrested, employed Mr. T.
N. Hopkins to go across the border
and take charge of the cases.
Mr. Hopkins returned on Wednes
day afternoon.
"What was the result of your trip?”
the reporter asked Mr. Hopkins, as
the latter stepped from the Monticcllo
traiu,
’.‘I got my men off," said Mr. Hop
kins.
“What about the case, who were ar
rested, and for what?” queried the re
porter.
“To go back to the beginning,”
said Mr. Hopkins, “On Monday, July
28th, Bill Jones, with several other
lamoncc fishermen, were nrrested and
committed in default of a §200 bond,
for trial by the circuit court of Leon
comity, Fla., for violating the first
section of a law made by the Florida
legislature in 18$7, lor the protection
of fish in fresh water streams ami
lakes in the stale of Florida: sec Acts,
1887, page 1-122. The section refer
red to, made penal the fishing in fresh
water lakes and streams with lines, for
barter, sale or shipment beyond the
limits of the stale. The nets of 1880,
Florida Legislature, page 153, re
pealed the first section of the act of
1887.
“I wis employed hereby a number
of gentlemen interested ill the lisli
question, and went immediately to
Tallahassee. I had the prisoners
brought upon a writ of habeas corpus
before llou. D. S. Walker, Judge of
the Circuit court, who after hearing
the euse, discharged the prisoners,”
“The Inw, examined,” continued
the gentleman, “does not prohibit
fishing with hook and line in fresh
water lakes or streams in Florida, and
carrying the fish for sale, beyond the
limits of the state; nor docs it prohibit
non residents from fishing with rod
and line in any of the fresh lakes or
streams, provided fish so caught are
fur homo consumption, and not for
sale.”
Many of our citizens buy fish caught
in Florida, and many go to Iamonce
for the sjiort of fishing. These all,
will be interested in the lucid expla
nation of the lnw by Mr. Hopkins.
In Memoriam.

July 30, 1890. j
Mr. A. L. Mnrkclt died at the
home of Mr. James Massey, of Brooks
county, near Harmony church, on the
23th inst. He was confined to his bed
but a few days.
Mr. Mnrkett was one of the leading
and most prominent young men in
the county, was a farmer, and will be
greatly missed in that community.
H&had a large circle of friends, and
was making u mark in the world ns
fast os any young man.
He never prolessed religion, but
was nn example to young men who
have started out in life. May his death
prove to be the cause of some poor
shipwrecked souls in that community
to find Joy iu the religion of the Lord,
and professing him publicly ns their
personal .Savior.
We trust he has gone to that better
lnnd where around the throuc ol God
tho niigcis stand, with golden harps
in hand, siuging praise to Him who
delivers the sin-sick soul out of its
bond, and stands its feet on the Hock
of Ages, where sickness nor death
Rover comes to part friends and loved
ones; where peace and happiness shall
reign throughout eternal ages, and the
saved of the Lord shall rest from toil
and strife, forever with God.

To The Alliancemen of Thomas
County.
At your meeting in July, you did
me the honor to elect me President of
the County Alliance.
Ab such, it becomes my duty lion
estly to advise you on nil questions
affecting the interests of our order.
1 learu from opinions expressed to
me verbally, nnd from letters written
to me by prominent members of the
Alliance, that great dissatisfaction ex
ists as to the result of tho primary
election as declared by the democratic
executive committee. The main
grounds of dissatisfaction arc:
1st. That the executive committee
were not sufficiently diligent iu having
their orders thoroughly understood
in regard to the manner of conducting
the election,
2d. That the lbul weather caused
the loss of hundreds of votes to the
Alliance ticket in the couuty pre
cincts, and therefore that the rc-
dict of a majority of the legal demo
cratic voters of Thomas couuty.
In afiswer to the first complaint, I
am satisfied that the members of the
executive committee are all gentlemen
of sterling integrity, and that they
did the best they could in the short
time which elapsed between the hold
ing of the mass meeting and the pri
mary.
In the second place, while it is con
ceded by all fair-miuded men that
the heavy ruins uloue prevented the
triumph of the Alliance ticket, it
would he unjust to Mr. Mitchell and
his supporters to hold them responsi
ble for the acts of Providence.
In conclusion I would say let us,
as good democrats, giv-i Mr. Mitchell
a cheerful, cordial and Hearty sup
port, nud let us frown down all hints
at independentism, which bus been,
and always will ho, the curse of party
organization.
With my thunks lor your generous
support, 1 remain,
Fraternally yours,
A. Q. Moody.
M. W. Simmons.
This gentleman, and lie is well and
favorably known to many of our rend
ers, announces himself to-day as a
candidate lor Tax Receiver of Thom
as county. Mr. Simmons is a one
legged confederate soldier. He has
been a tru* and trusted democrat all
these years, supporting with a loyalty
worthy of commendation, the nomi
nees of the party in national, state und
county elections. He has never held
office, but thinks now that the time
has come to pass tho “dumplins.” Mr.
Simmons is thoroughly competent,
and will, if elected, fill the office well
ami faithfully. Like the sterlni;
democrat thnt he is, lie submits his
claims to the democratic party.
