Are The Guards Interested
This?
We find the following in the News
of yesterday.
A warrant paid by Adjutant Gen
eral Kell to day, amounting to 82,942,
for accommodation furnished soldiers
at tho late encampment in lieu of ra
tions, suggests the statement that the
railroads charged so much for trans
portation that the subscription raised
in the city of Augusta to bo added to
tho appropriation of tho state was in
sufficient to discharge the expenses of
the encampment. The troops them
selves fell heir to a debt of about 81,-
000, for the pay nent of which no pro
vision has been made.
We hope the next legislature will
be more liberal with the volunteer
soldiery of the State.

Three War Anecdotes.
These bright hits are credited to the
Chattanooga Times:

askcihhm ttii'ltrtWWr ll Feuhdcrstood
the position of a soldier. Tho latter

ward, march.” As lie never gave the
contmnnd to “halt,” the Georgian
kept on marching until begot tired;
but this little hint cured him. and his
next application was th-oiigh the

Once Gen. Hardee came across a
straggler and asked him "why lie did
not travel faster and keep up with his
command.’'
The soldier wished to know “what
i*i the deuce he had to do with it.”
“Only that I am Gen. Hardee, the
commander of this department,” was
the reply.
“Oh, you wrote si book on tactics,
did you?”
“I did,” said the general.
• “Well.’ said the privato, “I have
been taught, according to your rules,
how to double column at half d : stanee.
Now I >vi»’i you would tell me how to
double distauce on half rations ”
Gen. Hardee stuck spurs to hi-

The Force Bill Gives Way To Other
Measures.
New York July 29.—Tho Herald’s
Washington special says that Senator
Hear wept tears of humilation last
night. He pleaded in vain for tho
iramodiate consideration of the Force
bill and used all his powers oi argu
ment and pathos to bring his col
leagues in tbe Republican Senatorial
caucus to his way of thinking.
Ho said many changes had been
made in the bill, and more would be
made to satisfy conservative Senators.
The hateful domiciliary clause, the
partisan jury commission clause, the
brutal bayonet clause would all ho
stricken out if only the Senate would
pass something bearing tho name of
tho election bill nnd carrying Federal
power into the local affairs of the
Southorn people. Tho bill wns kicked
from pillar to post by tho friends of
other measures. They treated the
election hill as an entirely subsidiary
mensurc. Members of tho Finance
Committco wanted tho tariff bill de
bated until it wns passed. The friends
of the River and Hnrbor bill asked
that that lie considered. Tho advo
cates of tho reorganization of the Uni
ted States Courts urged that subject
to he placed on tho list, and some of
the Western men wanted the Laud
Forfeiture hill taken up.
A caucus was held to determine the
order of business, nud it was finally
decided that the Tariff and Appro
priation bills have tho right of way.
