What a New York Dealer Says
About Their Market.
M. W. Simmons.
Editor Times ,5,ntkiii'RIsk:
As it will soon lie time to call a pri
mary to nominate county officers,
jve sijggesf the name of Mr. M. W.
{Simmons as a candidate for the office
of tax receiver of Thomas couuty.
Mr- {simmons needs no praise from
jmV one. us Ids many qualifications
commend him lo tlio confidence of
the democracy of Thomas county. The
fuel that lie lost a leg fighting for con-
vietious dearer than life, would com
mend him to the voters of Thomas
county.
We therefore suggest his name, not
at his request, lint of our own free will,
believing that if lie should lie nomi
nated lie would accept the office.
Many Dkjkxtiath.
All kinds of commercial printing
done iu first-class style at this office.
Anything touching the price and
status of the penr is rend with interest
by many. Wo arc permitted by
Capt. Varncdoc to make the following
extracts from a letter received from a
leading commission house in Ne v
York, a day or two since:
"We have had a hard market of
late. Pears arc poorer than last year.
The prices started too high. Had we
started off barrels at 86.00, to 86 50;
and crates at 81.50, to 81-75, a stea
dy market could have been maintain
ed, aud possibly prices might have ad
vanced; nut buyers got stuck at the
outset, and they have been struggling
ever siucc to get out. They are hold
ing over from steamer to steamer, nnd
the fruit is getting in worse condition
every day. We could buy two or
three hundred crates of these held
over pears to-day, at about 75 cents.
They arc piled up on the docks to
demoralize the market. New York
buyers will stay at home next year.
They have lost money. Some arc
putting pears in cold storage. The
crate market will be demoralized for
the next week. The character of the
fruit, and the manner of its shipment,
have brought the pears into disre
pute.”
This letter was written on the 25th
inst. It gives some insight into the
New York market.
The fact is, there has been too many
pears shipped to New York. They
ought to be scattered. And then
poor fruit should not be shipped, and
all fruit should be carefully packed
and shipped. No wonder the fruit is
in dissepute. One to see the charac
ter of mauy of the pears shipped from
here, and the slovenly manner iu
which they are shipped, will wonder
that they bring enough to pay frieght.
There is a lesson in this for pear grow
ers, Will they heed it?

After Many Years.
In 1866, twenty-four years ago, n
Mr. Summers, of Tenu , was trading
through this section. He became
possessed of a lot of land in Colquitt
couuty, and some stock. Being some
thing of aBohcmian, lie placed the pro
perty in charge of Mr. Charles Gandy,
and left. Anil Mr. Gandy has never
heard from him since. But, like au
honest man, Mr. Gandy has been true
to his trust. He sold the stock twen
ty years ago, and lias kept an eye on
the land, paying tnxes, Ac. The other
day a young man came up to Mr.
Gandy’s and told him thnt he wns
the son of Mr. .Summers, nutl that his
father had been deai) two ycaye. Jfts
credentials were all right, and the
steward settled with his principal, tho
settlement being perfectly satisfactory
to both partios. Young Summers
sold his lot of land in Colquitt to Mr.
Miles Monk, for 8450.
This reads like a romance, but ’tis
a true story.
Charles Gandy.
This gentleman announces himself
