Lester is gaining ground in the first,
We hope he'll make the landing.
_ The next meeting ol the horticultu,
will be held at Quitman.
Atlanta's elephant has reached Phil
adilphia and is cn route to Georgia.
Turner had twenty-six votes in the
Albany convention, Guerry ten and
Wooten two.
Mr. T. J. Beggs and Miss Nellie
Parramore were married in Madison
Fla., on Thursday.
Harrison is, urging the Senate to
pass the force bill with the bayonet
feature. Well, it is just like him. He
is both little and mean.
Professor Wiggins says that the
earth will not be destroyed lor mi lions
of years.
Thanks, Wig, we feel more cheetful.
The Tennessee Alliance has dis
carded the sub-treasury scheme. The
Florida Al’iance has also refused to
|iut it in their platform of principles
it is positively denied that the In
•Irons sent home by Buflaln Bill were
without a red scent.—Chicago Even
ing Post.
Hughes is going for Blount'. scalp
In the meantime Rule Ltster is
gaining ground in the first. Barnes is
dying hard—and the devil’s to pay
generally.
Henry G. 1 urner did not shrink
from making tl>e sub-treasuty scheme
an issue. And yet it is said, by some
that the hub-treasury scheme is not, or
.should not be an issue.
Lowndes county shows and increase
in values since last year, ot $230,325
Good for Lowndes. Thomas shows
an increase of ovir $300,000. This
goes to show that South Georgia is the
most prosperous section 01 the state,
“Mr. Bunting,” said the doctor, af
ter an examination, “I fear your
wife’s mind is gone.” ‘‘That doesn’t
eurpriso me, - ’ replied the poor man,
“she has been giving me a peice of it
every day for seven years.”—Figaro,
A correspondent writes: ‘‘Texas
is a state without a village or a creek,
No place is too small to be a city, and
no stream is too small to be called a
river. It has an enormous empire and
everything is done on nil enormous
iscale."
This from the Constitution: '• Have
you heard the latest combination?”
asked Walter Rhett as he got on a
Fulton county electric car yesterday.
Nobody had.
“It comes from an allianceman, and
here it is: Ncrthen for the senate,
Livingston for governor and Peek foj
congress.”
WatciT Them-
There : s danger that the farmer
will be deceived and misled by noisy
politicians who are now loudly claim
ing to be their friends. We predict
that the time is not far off when the
farmers will cry aloud to he delivered
from sonic of tbeir alleged friends.
We do not believe the sub trermry
bill is either w : sc or Democratic: and
believing thus we have felt it a plain
duty to warn those who may be nr-,
led by its specious provisions to reflect
well before endorsing it. We conceive
it to be the duty of every good citizen
to deal fairly and frankly with his fel
low citizens. Every cheap politician,
every demagogue, every seeker after
office and every crank is now claim
ing to be the farmer’s friend and seek
ing to win his favor and bis vote.
They should be watched and their re
cords wrutinized.—:Borne Tribune.
Against It.
Gov. Bob Taylor thus expresses
himself on the force bill:
‘•The force bill :s an envious stab at
the prospering south. There is no
need in any state for legislation that
is designed to foment strife, murder
and liot; e>emf it were legitimate and
constitutional legislation, there is no
need for it in Tennessee. It is based
on the false assumption that all negroes
always vote the republican ticket. If
there is a state where ‘‘bribery, intimi
dation and false counting are resorted
to,” this bill will not cure these evils,
because the people are persuaded that
it is an unconstitutional interference
with the right to elect their own repre
sentatives ; is designed 10 disrupt the
peaceful relations of the races, to clan
the negro and reinaugurale the atroci
ties that characterized reconstruction
times ; to stem the tide of prosperity
and development that is now sweeping
the south to the Iront—a treasonable,
contemptible, atrocious, assassinating
attempt to perpetuate republican ru'e
at the expense of peace andpiosperity
of both the white and black people of
the south.’’
Cheap Jute-
The Savannah Daily Times says:
Jute has tumbled away down and if
it doesn’t soon hound up again, the far
mers will bn able to get thatsubstantial
bagging for about one half what was
demanded by the trust whan it at»rtp4
out on its gorging scheme two years
ago.
Here are quotations furnished by a
New York firm, who hrid'es vest
quantities of the bagging:
"There seems to be a little more in
quiry for jute bagging, and to-day we
can quote you following prices: One
and a half pounds at 12 pounds
at 52- 2 pounds at 6A; 2\ poymjs
at 7 j.
“The above figures are f. o. b. in
New York, and for full weight, lresh
made standard bagging.”
This is good news for the farmeis.
However, they had better stiejf to
cotton bagging until the jute combine
is thoroughly subdued.
A Serious Showing for Ohio.
For ihe first lime in its history, the
decennial appraisement ot land values
in, Ohio, now practically completed,
will show a marked decrease in the
value of farm lands, approaching in
some counties, it is feared, to 20 or 30
per cent- Wayne county, one of the
best agricultural districts, shows a de
crease in appraised farm values of 14}
per cent, or $7 dollars per acre, since
the lest appraisement,and the decrease
in real or market value is estimated to
be at least $20 per acre. The desert
ed fatms ofNew England,remarks the
Boston Post, have long been the ob
ject of comparison with the more fertile
west, but the area ol unprofitable agri
culture has expanded westward so
rapidly that the result ot the appraise
ment in Ohio will surprise all but the
larmers.—Savannah Daily Times,
The south will make a better show
ing. The fact of it is, the south is the
coming section of the nation. Keep
you* eye on the south.
Corn Roasted in the Fields.
Kansas, CITY, July 51.—Special
dispa ches from various points in
Western Kansas say that the hot winds
of the past three days have reduced
already the low condition of crops in
that part ol the state. The winds
have literally cooked the corn, and
many fields will not yield a single ear.
This condition prevails along the Mis
souri Pacific cast of Concordia for too
miles.

The Kind of Girl She le.
The girl of the period iu her moscu

resemblance to the young-inan-about

latter. The feminine appetite cannot
