An audience, which would have
^coii prcdituhle had a professional
company appeared in midwinter,
gathered on Friday evening to witness
Lady Audlcy’s Secret, by the Boston
Dramatic Corps. The dress circle
was packed with fashionable drcs?pd
ladies and their escoytg.
8:hQ the tell tide little bell ting.
|cd and the curtain slowly rolled up
for the first time in many months, dis
closing twenty members of the Guards
in full uniform. A prise contest by
the members ot the company preceded
the regular play. The boys in their
handsome gray uniforms stood like
statues neath the gaslight, Lieuten-
tpjbj fjopkips and Jcrjjer, and Sorgt.
Curtright, of the Hussars,' acted os
judges. After a few preliminary
commands by Capt. Ilanscll, to warm
tho boys up to their work, the contest
commenced.
Sharp and quick were the commands.
Then “right face” was given, when a
number of the boys dropped out.
^gaji) the coram!|nc|sof Capt. Hausell
rang out, ami again another batch
dropped out. This wcut on until on
ly first and second sergeants Smith
and Bone were left. With the rapid
ity and precisions of veterans the ser
geants obeyed the rapid commands.
Finally, upon a “catch” command,
Charley stepped to the rear ipifl left
jlctc flip victor.
Intense interest was shown in the
drill throughout, the boys being cheer
ed lustily by the audience.
Mr. James L. Hall, of the Hussars,
stepped to the front and proceeded in
a speech which caught the audience, to
deliver the handsome gold ring offer
ed by the Hussars. Mr. Hall said:
“Jtulietand Gentlemen
"fjn occasions lilfe this, it is usual to
pay some passing and fitting tributo to
beauty and chivalry. Were I gifted
with the splendid superlatives of a
'fully, or the more recent rhetorical
beauties of a Grady, I might plume
the wiugs of my Pegasus and soar to
Miltonic heights iu an appropriate eu-
logium. But since we have the arti
cles themselves presented to our optic
vision in such pleasing array, words of
mine would bo i|end nut} meaningless
filings. 'J-he picture would fall too
fur short of tho original.
“A distinguished commander, after
he had sunken the soldier in the poli
tician once said, “to the victor belongs
the spoils.” To the victor to-night
belongs this spoil. T hold in my hand
a ring. We hear much of late oftlie
Thnmasvillo ring. This is a Thoraas-
yjljo ring- I}ut unlike tip! fowq ring
jt is not provided with a clique attach
ment. 1 trust, however, tnqt it will
pot prove to tRe gallant Quarts gs
the ring has to democracy—a Bone of
contention.
“Mr. Bone, you have fairly won
this golden prize on a hotly contested
field, as your appearance and the
perpiration on your brow eloquently
testify. One of the greatest captains
of the most renowned military age,
said to one of the most splendid ar
mies ever marshaled in battle array:
“The eyes of your emperor are upon
you.” When the lives, the property
and the sacred honor of the homes
and fire sides of this community arc
in jeopardy I trust when you behold
the golden hand upon your finger,
your military skill and success to
night, that you will remember that
the eyes of the public are upon you.”
The opening scene in Lady Aud-
ley’s >Secret, captivated the audience,
and this interest never lagged* during
the entire performance. Mies Annie
Hicks, ns Lady Audlcy, was the star
of the evening. Her acting was a
surprise to many. Her acting was re
markable for a young girl whose his
trionic talent 1ms never been cultivat
ed. Graceful and natural, she went
through the difficult role, eliciting
frequent applause. Mr. T. B. Bar-
row, ns Sir Michael Audley, the
trusting husband, was a success. Mr.
Barrow had a fine conception of the
character, and played away above
the average amateur. Mrs. Barrow,
as the daughter of Sir Michael, fairly
captured the audience by her acting.
She seemed to, and did adapt herself
to the oharactcr represented, in
manner which would have reflected
oredit on some professionals. Miss
Jessie Nelms, Phoebe, the lady’s maid,
though not having a leading role,
played her part remarkably well. She
won the sympathies of the audience
by her womanly devotion to duty.
Mr. Q, Nelms, ns Robert Audley,
played the difficult pait in a manner
which showed that he had a most
thorough conception of the piece and
character. Mr. Nelms fully sustain
cd the reputation which preceded him
as an excellent amateur performer.
Mr, 0. It, Hawke, as George Tol-
boys, the deserted husband, was fully
up to the standnrd. From first to
lust, his part was played iu a manner
which was as gratifying to his friends
as it was creditable to himself. But
newspaper men, by long and contin
ued practice, learn to play their parts
in life.
Mr. D. M. Hum, as Luke Marks,
the drunken game keeper, brought
down the house. 'Mao’ caught on to
the role of the drunken vagabond
from the start. His part was excep
tionally well rendered. He wns the
recipient of frequent and hearty ap-
Taking ii ns n whole, the perfor
mance was remarkably good for ama

Mr. R. C. Ingalls, of Ways, was in
town yesterday.
