JOHN TBiri.BTF. Pur, ainn.
The gubernatorial convention will
meet in Atlanta on Thursday. There
will be a gre^tgathering of the clans.
Josh Billings once said: “I have
often thought it would have been
money in my pocket if I had never
been born.
Now that Turner has been nomi
nated, let's shuck ofl our courts and
ilect him. The old second will do
this, without a doubt.
The latest telegraphic reports from
Washington represent the force bill
as being temporarily blocked and
checked, with the astute Gorman on
guard. Gorman’s mighty smart.
Mr. T. V. 1’owdcrly says of the
force bill: “There is more intimida
tion in four lints of that law than in all
the ‘Southern outrages’ that have
taken place since the war.”
In a speech in Atlanta, the other
day, Hon. N. J. Hammond said:
“Georgia has the strongest delegation
in the present Congress; but I fear
that in the next Congress she will have
the weakest.”—Hawkinsville Dispatch.
Fay Templeton, who has been in
Kurope, has returned to this country
and will appear in bcrlesquc opera
this season. Fay is well remembered
throughout the south, as the daughter
of the veteran actor and manager,
John Templeton.
The BrunswickTimessays: When
he was told that Governor Gordon was
"not scared” about his chances for
the United States Senatorslup, Colonel
Livingston laughed. When the Gen
eral Assembly gets through with the
election ot a Senator, Governor Gor
don will laugh.
It pays to practice law in New
Yotk, provided you can do so as suc
cessfully as Charles 1\ Bacon. He
has just earned $300,000 by break
ing the McGraw-Fiskc will. Mr.
Bacon was admitted to the bar only
ten years ago. For a young lawyer,
he seems to be doing well.—Ex.
Congiessman Barnes has written a
letter to the Augusta Chronicle, virtu
ally withdrawing from the race for
congress. Another victim of the sub
treasury scheme is added to the list,
Tom Watson can not do any more
for his constituents than Mr. Barnes
could have done.
He Went Down With His Colots Fly
ing.
Mr. Barnes refused to endorse the
sub-treasury scheme, and so has been
defeated. The man who defeated him
in all probability docs not, at heart, be
lieve the plan feasible; but lie, like
others, will ride into office on the wave
which is sweeping the country. The
Chronicle, in noticing ihe defeat of
Mr Barnes, says:
Although defeated for renomination
for Congress at a time when he was
best equipped for a signal and able
discharge of the duties of a member of
Congress, he is a bigger and a better
man than at any other time of his
public life He goes down with flying
colors for democratic principle s and
retires from the race with self respect
and with the esteem ard confidence of
those who know him.
Nit Grammatical if Legal.
Filtecn years ago there lived in
Dawson a well known individual in the
lowly walks of life, Baty Hall, who
figured prominently in our justice
courts as a bailiff. Illiterate and very
partial to corn juice, his unique levies
attracted attention. On one of the^
levies we find written : “Levied this
fi fa on one crcen colored Horse blind
in one Eye and the other Running
water 6 bushels more or less of corn
50 pounds foder more or less 50
pounds of pea vines more or less 1
grobin hoe 1 spaid a fuc shucks 4
punkins 7 head of hoghes if they can
be found leved on as property of the
defendant property pointed out by the
plaintiff.
W. B. Haix, Bailiff.
The Boston Advertiser delights to
think that the Alliance is bound to
break “ Hie Solid South.”
The Advertiser is jumping at con
clusions; the wish, no doubt, being
father to the thought. Ninety-nine
out of every hundred all ancemen in the
south are simon pure, unadulterated
democrats; at least that is the case in
the second district of Georgia.
The University graduates have had
such a big swing in holding political
offices in Georgia that Mercer has de
cided to enter the lists. Congressman
Grimes has been defeated by a Mercer
graduate in the fourth ; Clements has
retired before a Mercer graduate in
the seventh, and if Maj. Barnes is de
feated iu the tenth it will be by a Mer
cer graduate.
The editorofitie Whtgl.aro Advance
evidently doesn’t intend to have any
dodging about how members elect to
,the legislature from Decatur shall vote
nn the Senatorial question, lie says :
STATE OF GEORGIA—Thomas (‘olinl

Railroads for Ten Years.
Probably no more impressive proof
could be furnished of the growth and de
velopment of the United States during
the past ten years than a statement, of
the increase iu railroad property.
The mileage and'the capital invested
in railroads in this county have almost
doubled since the census of 1880.
The total railroad mileage then was
87,000 miics; now it is over 1G0.C00
miles, and increasing rapidly. The
total investments in railroad property-
in the United Stales ten years ago
were represented by So,000,000,000
iu stocks and bonus; now there are
over §10,000,000,000 of such proper
ty.—Exchange.
Smashing Records.
The running record has been smash
ed all to flinders this year by fleet
horses East and West. It is probable
that the ironing record may tumble
before the season is over. Sunol, the
Calilornia wonder, now owned by
Robert Bonner, trotted a half mile at
Detroit in t:o*?<. The record of Maud
S. is a mile in a:o8y, but there seems
little doubt that Sanol can get over the
distance in less time. Mr. Bonner
has proposed to match her for $10,000
against Belle Hamlin, and the match,
if arranged, will probably be the oc
casion of a new trotting record.— Tele
graph.
Clifford Anderson.
The Sparta Ishmaelile in its issue
of yesterday says:
Under the circumstances, the incom
ing governor, will need the wise and
learned counsels of such a rain as
Clifford Anderson lor attorney genera',
to give direction to a double-barreled,
self-acting veto power. No man as
slightly inoculated with legal! nowledgc
as George N. Lester would be able to
meet the necessities of the case.
Hardly Big Enough.
From tlic* Iit«1inn:ii»oIis Itam’a Horn.
It has been stated ihat a thigh-bone
nine feet long was found in Colorado
some time ago. If all the other bones
could be found and put together, the
skeleton would look nearly as big as
the free-born American feels when he
is marching in a procession.
Financial Item.
Wife—What are you studying so
busily these days ?
Husband—I am interested in the
silver problem.
Wife—So am I. Would you he
kind enough to give me half a dollar,
—Lowell Citizen.
‘ I’m afraid, Johnny,” said the Sun
day school teacher rather severely,
“that I will ncvermcet you in heaven.”
"Why ? What have you been doin’
now ?’’—Ashland I'rets.
