The Georgia Watermelon.
South Georgia 1ms developed a new
industiy. The cultivation of melons.
Few who have not given special at
tention to the subject, are aware of the
extent and magnitude ol the business.
The Augusta Chronicle has this to say
about the subject, and we commend it
to the consideration of the melon
growers ot Thomas county, and nlso,
to those who contemplate embarking
in the business next season. The
Chronicle says:
‘•Mr. J. H. Hale, special agent of
the elevouth census for the investiga
tion ot horticulture, truck farm and
fruit, is euthusiatic over the Georgia
melon. The census will make a spe
cialty of this kingly fruit.
Mr. Hale has developed the fact
that Georgia has absorbed the melon
crop ot Ameiica and is now supplying
the North aud West with this great
staple fruit. The mclou has become
a royal summer article. Coming at
the end of the strawberry season, when
the heat of rummer demands the sue-
euleney of this juicy gem, the melon
is now more thuu a luxury. It is a
staple article ot food. In these days
of quick transit mid increased produc
tion, it has ceased to he an article
solely for the tables ot the rich. It is
iu easy reach of the poor aud its mis
sion North mid West, in keeping down
the temperature and supplying the
place of heavier meats aud drinks is a
great one.
“The crop of Georgia this year will
be 8,090 cars of 1,000 melons each.
This yield of S,000,000 melons is be
ing scut abroad every year. They
net the growers 0 cents apiece, being
nearly §500,000 put into the pockets
of Georgia farmers at a season of the
year when they most need it, and
leaving their laud for a pea crop—
making two yields for the season.
Georgia lands yield on nn average of
700 melons to the acre, although some
expert* gel as many us 2,000 to the
acre. The average is increasing every
year, and next year’s yield in Georgia
will probably he 10,000.000. The
railroads this season have gotten
about 12 cents u melon for moving
the crup, amounting in the total to
§1,000,000, or twice as much ns the
producer. A melon which costs 10
cents in Georgia will bring 30 or 40
cents iu New York.
“The railroads, of course, have
(mill up a tremendous traffic in mel
on*. They have pushed the trade,
sent special men to work up the busi
ness, built fruit cars, made fast
through schedules, nud given their
melon traius rights of way with first
class puBseugcr rights The Georgia
melon is shipped by thousands to cve-
ery poiut iu the North nud West from
Cortland, Me. ; to Denver, Col. Some
idea of what the melon trade is worth
to the railroads may be gleaned from
the statement that each acre yields
§50 ill freight while an acre planted
in cotton averages less than §2 in
freight.
"Mr. Gale thinks it no wonder the
Georgia farmer is iu so much better
condition than the Western farmer—a
fact which he vouches for by actual
observation made iu the past few
months. He believes not one bun
dredth part of the mclou territory of
Georgia is under cultivation. Aud
the demand tor the Georgia melon is
growing every year.”
“Mr. Hale declares that Southwest
Georgia has become the melon centre,
and the Ivolh gem, by virtue of its su
perior qualities for shipping aud its
staying properties, is the staple melon.
Sometimes it keeps two weeks.”
Thomas county has not engaged as
largely in this business ns some of her
sister counties, hut if proper means
are employed to equalize the distri
bution of this crop iu the future, it
will pay those along the lines of rail
way, to engage in the business on a
more extensive scale, than they have
in the past.

Prospects Brightening for the
Augusta Road.

says:
President J. C. Short, of the Au
gusta and Thomasvillc Construction
Company, which is building the Au
gusta nud West Florida railroad, arri
ved in the city yesterday. He will be

A conference was held yesterday
between the officers of the Augusta
and West Florida road and President
Short. Iu speaking of the prospects
of the road, while asking to he excus
ed from going into particulars, lie says
the Hue is uow almost invincible.
Something startliug is on dit for the
next week.
We. hero in Thomasvillc, arc wait
ing aud—watching, hoping and trust
ing that the road will he built.
