“The Salvation Army has always
had funeral reform as one *of its ob
jects,’’ said Major Harding, “but these
orders only emphasize our duty in this
direction and call special attention to
it. Funerals, as ordinarily conducted,
are a great expense and the burden
upon the poor is very heavy. Yet.
according to custom, they think they
must ‘put on style,’ as it were. Our
labors are large among the poor, and
if we can lighten their burdens by
freeing them from the bonds of useless
and foolish customs we should do so.
As for crape and mourning, why
should we mourn a hen one of our
number reaches t!.e end of his labors
and troubles and finds the rest and
peace f« r which he has toiled V' No
less a man than Henry Ward Beecher
preached this, and as believers in
God’s love and mercy, we cm do no
less.”
