Wc Ought to Advertise.
The reporter had a few minutes talk
yesterday with Mr. R. W, Glading,
of the Monon Route, who had just
returned from a Florida trip.
“How ore the peoplo preparing for
the tourist travel?” he was asked.
“By the heaviest advertising ever
done. Papers, pamphlets and other
advertising matter is to dsitributed
throughout the North, aud such
ofTorts cannot result otherwise than
favorable to that section. The rail
roads ore doing much for Florida this
season, and the indications point to
n fine season. How I do wish our
people would take as much interest
injudicious advertising, as tho Flor
ida people; and the railroad should
help in this matter. By all means
let us advertise, so that wo may reap
tho benefit.”
It is needless to add that the Times*
Enterprise’s views corresponds with
Mr. Glading’s, for nothing benefits n
town and especially a resort place,
more than bringing it promptly nnd
attractively before the people.
A social scandal is just on the eve
of culmination here, says a Saratoga
special to the Boston Herald. On
July 8 a gentleman nnd lady arrived
at the Grand Union hotel. The man
entered their names upon the hotel
register as B. F. Sherman and T. D.
Parker. They were assigned to con
necting rooms, 343 nnd 345. They
were mentioned as being of tho “Cu
ban set,” as having lived n year oi
more in Boston, spent the past winter
in Thomasvillo, Ga., and ns having
traveled extensively together. Mr.
Sherman spoke of Mrs. Parker i>s be
ing his sister. It turns out that' she
was not bis sister, and that her nliases
are Marion Palmer and Reno Parker.
After remaining at the hotel for twen
ty days, they took possession of Hon.
James O’Brien’s beautiful cottnge,
which Mr. Sherman rented until the
first of October. Here, in this Sara
toga cottage home, with T. D. Parker
at the head of it all, Mr. Sherman set
up an elegant establishment, with car
riage and manservants and maidser
vants galore. A little later comes
Mr. Sherman’s mother. Mrs. Susan
Sherman, from the family home at
Maplewood, N. J; and a little later
still his widowed sister, Mrs. Edward
Rook, of New York. Mrs. Rook’s
daughter, Edith, was the belle of
Washington. last winter, and of New
port the summer before. A few days
ago Mr. Sherman had his own son,
Bonnie,” a bright 9-year-oUl-lad,
brought here; and all these incon-
gernous people—mother son, grand
son, sister, nephew, friend—with a
full knowledge of the scandal of tho
situation, are and have been living to
gether ns a happy family, under one
roof and under tho domestic domina
lion ol Mrs. T. D. Parker, who is
neither in fact or by law, wife, sister
or relative.
Daring all this time, until a few
days ago, the lawful wife and only
real Mrs. B. F. Sherman, with their
little son, was ignorantly nnd inno
cently living at homo in Maplewood,
N. J., with her husband’s other wi
dowed sister, Mrs. Augustus Stoneall,
A few days ago Mrs. B. F. Sherman
having learned that her husband was
here, came to Mathanicsville with her
boy and thence to Saratoga. A pri
vate detective was set to watch the
premises, and som« of t.ie servants
suborned to make observations of the
situation. The lawyer in the case.
Mr. James L. Scott of Ballston, was
here to-day in connection with Mrs,
Sherman, and he was instructed by
her to bring suit for damage against
Mrs. T. D. Parker for alienating her
husband’s aflections, and also to insti
tutc suit for divorco and alimony.
Mr. Sherman is, or seems to ho, i
man of large wealth, and is living at
tho rate of about 820,000 a year. He
is the promoter of the Flanuery pa
tents for making water gas, aud has
an interest in other patents yielding
him large revenues. He is well known
in New York. Mrs. Sherman, whose

The Jewish New Year.
Sunday evening commenced the
Jewish New Year, or Rosh Hashonn,
ono of the two most holy days in tho
Jewish calendar. This was ono of tho
days that, in ancient times, as many
of the people as possible were wont to
gather at the templo at Jerusalem to
pray for the remission of their sins.
Ten days intervene between this day
and Yom Kippur, tho day of atone
ment, which are called the ten peni
tcntial days. In olden times these
days were scrupulously regarded, and
were devoted to preparing the mind
for tho day of atonement. This lat
ter is the most important, and is cele
brated by entire abstinence lrom food
and drink from sunset to sunset, or
twenty-four hours. Tho time
passed in open confession and fervent
prayer. Following this comes the
Feast of Tabernacles which, to a great
extent, winds up the holiday season
1 for the Israelites.
