Count Van Malke celebrated his
90th birthday, at Berlin yesterday. It
was a brilliant occasion.
They are building a railroad in the
Holy Land, and in future when a man
goes down from Jerusalem to Jerico
he will fall among Pullman palace car
porters.—Ex.
Next Tuesday will fix the political
complexion of the next congress. It
is generally conceded that the demo
crats will make large gains ; enough,
in fact, to control the house.
Blocks-of-Five Dudley’s eflort to
get damages out of the New York
World without being subjected to
questioning in court has failed, and
he will now probably abaudon his
suit. The risk he would run, in spite
of his shrewdness, of having damaging
campaign secrets twisted out of him
is too great for a mau to run who has
access to the republican corruption
fund anyway, and is therefore sure of
a comfortable living—Telegraph.
The shooting of Rube Burrows after
his arrest oroved to be quite a mtslor-
lune to 'he men who were brave
enough to effect his capture. The
postofiice department had offered
$i,oco for his arrest and conviction on
a charge of robbing the mails, but as
he was not convicted, no one connect
ed with the government has any right
to pay the promised reward. The ex
press companies, however, are not
thus hampered by red tape, and the
large rewards which they had offered
for the capture or death ot the noted
outlaw will, it is said, be promptly
paid/—Savannah Times.
We regret to learn of the death of
"Mrs. Paul Jenkins, which occurred the
33rd inst, at Greenville, S. C. Mrs.
Jenkins was the wife of Mr. Paul Jenk
ins, the well known civil engtneer.
She resided in this city sometime.
Mrs Jenkins was a most estimable
lady, dearly beloved by all who knew
Ber. She leaves five little motherless
children. The young mother, only
27 years old, has been taken, and the
bereaved husband, relatives and
friends will sincerely ntourn her death.
The deceased was related to Rev.

It is tl.e custom of the Jews, how
ever, to go on certain days ot every
week to a place outside this wall, and
there, leaning with their heads against
the stone, they wail over the loss of
Jerusalem, and pray to God to give
back the land to his chosen people
This is known as the Jew’s wailing
place, and when I visited it I found
about fifty men in long gowns, and
like number of Jewish women with
shawls over their heads, weeping and
praying. Many of the men had white
beards, and the curly locks in fron' of
their ears were of spun silver.
Others had boys with them. Some
were in their prime, and the tears—
genuine tears —ran down the faces of
all, and some of them were convulsed
with sobbing as they leaned there and
prayed. The wailing of one old Jew
ish woman rings in my ears to this
day, and the whole cut an impression
into my memory that can never be ef
faced.—Frank G. Carpenter in Nation
al Tribune.

The Jews and Jerusalem.
The Jews believe that Palestine will
again come into their hands. They
thus read the promises of t->e Bible,
and there are thousands of these Jews
ot Jerusalem who have come here to
wait the day when the Lord will de
scend to earth and take his chosen
people out of the hands of the Turks
and again build up their city. Upon
the ruins of Soloman’s temple nuw
stands the great mosque of Omar,
which is to the Mohammedans the
holiest place outside of .Mecca.
A great wall of stone surrounds this
temple plateau, and this wall is believ
ed by antiquarians to have been a
part of the old temple wall. Inside of
this wall a Jew can never come, and
though it be the holiest ol holy places
to him he can never look upon it. Window Shades on Spring Rollers 35 cts. Etc -

Gold Used in Jewelry.
Large quantities of gold are every
year used for ornamental purposes
in the manufacture of plate and jew
elry. The wealthier a country grows
the greater is the demand tor these
articles of adornment, and until more
gold is imported the less there re
mains for monetary purposes as
Bullion or coin. Some years ago Mr.
Giflen estimated that in England
alone 4150,000,000 worth of gold ex
isted in the shape of plate, jewelry
and ornaments, and about ouc-half
the total production of silver is said
to be used in arts and manufactures.
The amount of gold in this country
lor monetary purposes the same high
authority estimates at £00,000,000.—

A Woman Suggested forJudge.
Among the many absurdities that
line the political pathway at short in- lnlrac " Sf -
tervals was the presentation of a peti
tion to President Harrison Monday,
in which the “Wage Workers’ Politi
cal Alliance”—whatever that may be
ot Washington requests that Eliza
beth Cady Stanton be nominated for
the seat on the supreme bench made
vacant by the death of Justice Miller.
In support of that modest request the
aforesaid impressive organization pro
ceeds to argue the point in this unan
swerable fashion: “In view of the
fact that a vacancy exists in the su
preme court; and iu view of the fact
that the second object of government
is ‘to establish justice,’ as may be seen
in the preamble of the national con
stitution : and in view of the fact that
the practice of the supreme court for
the past 100 years has been to stand
by its decisons, whether just or unjust;
and in view of the fact that women
whose minds are free from creeds, as
well as loyal to truth, justice and hu
manity, are better judges than men
under the same circumstances.” How
much of law or experience Mrs. Stan
ton may have accumulated, or why
they happen to suspect that she would
make a “better judge than a man un
der the Bamo circumstances” is not
fully disclosed. Hence, her chances
of being called Judge Stanton and
confining herself to black gowns are, at
the present, not very bright.—News.

In a Quandary.
The Georgia politician is in a quan
dary. ^etween the alliance, the sub
treasury plan and the Jefferson demo
cracy, the prohibitionists, local option
al, the tariff, (ence or no fence, game
laws and a dozen or two other per
plexing issues, the life of the politician,
in the language of Dickens, is “one
dewniiion grind.” The politician
with the expcr'.ness of the acrobat,
balances himself on the tence; nay he
straddleth it, and maketh mental cal
culations as to which side he will fall
on. The voter seeth him from a far
off, and yells : “Get down from that
fence.” The way politician asketli upon
which side the free born American cit
izen standeth, and shows an inclina
tion to light on that side. With equal
readiness he is prepared to slide down
on the other side, if the . next voter is
found on the opposite side of the fence.
In the meantime he hunteth high
and exposed places, hop : ng that the
lightning will strike him, and hat he
may get there in the end.
