Election next Tuesday, the 4'.h.
Turn out and vote (or Turner.
—
Democrats in the second district
should wake up. Turner ought to
have a rousing majority ; otherwise
Tommie Reed may count him out.
Messrs. Latham, Alexander & Co.,
estimate the next crop at 7.500,000
bales. This will be, if these figures
are rcoched, the largest crop ever
mule the United States.
The Rev. Father Augustine Tolten,
of Chicago, enjoys the distinction of
being the only person of African des
cent who has become a priest in the
Catholic church in America.
Senator Morrill, of Vermont, is the
third man who has been elected for a
fifth term in the United State* Senate.
The other two were Benton, of Mis
souri, and Anthony, of Rhode Island.
The total number of street railway s
in the United States and Canada is
now estimated at about i,ooo with a
total length of 8650 miles, and it is as
serted that ot these roads *64, or
about 25 per cent., with a mileage ol
*753 m'les, or about 20 per cent, ol
lO'al mileage, are operated by elec
tricity.
The anti-Gordon newspapers, with a
great flourish of head lines, announced
that Senator Brown would antagonize
Gen. Gordon in his address at Macon.
But he didn’t; but he did throw some
cold water on the sub-treasury plan.
Joseph E. Brown is a mighty smart
man; his head is level, and his judge
ment is always good.
It is credit tble that the offer of
$100 was spurned by the printer who
net up and worked off the programme
for the inter-state drill at Atlanta.
The members of die Gate City Guards,
who thought they could buy the prin
ter, were badly mistaken. A printer
may not be a regular attendant at
church or Sunday school; he may have
even to work on Sunday ; he may not
wear as fine clothes as some people,
but wnen a job is in his hands it is safe
from the prying eyes of the public.
He holds printing office secrets sacred.
Th:re are a great many worse people
in this world than the printer.
Statistics of Signature.
People used to write our obedi
ent servant" before their signatures to
letters, but now, as all know, there
are many forms. Says a writer who
lias looked the matter up:
I examined 300 of my old letters,
150 purely business letters, and an
equal number of a general nature
from friends aud acquaintances, none
from relatives, and all from different
ersons. Here are the statistics:

Grand Jury Presentments.
To the lion. Superior Court, Thomas Co:
Your Grand Jury chosen for the October
Term, 1890, lieg leave to submit the follow
ing ns their General Presentments:
We hav examined by committee the jub-
lic buildings ol the county, and find that tl c
court house is in good condition, with tl c
exception of the roof on south side, which ia
leukT and in need of repair. We recommend
that inside blinds be placed in the grand jury
and solicitor's rooms, and tint the floor of
the grand jury room* 1 icjco 'ered withfsoire
inexpensive material ;*tbat a suitalde raiin g
be placed around tile jury boxes, and that
comfortable stationary chairs be placid
therein; that a suitable rail he placed around
the clerk a desk; that a sufficient number of
desks together with suitable chairs Is - placed
within the liar for the use of the attorneys.
We find the jail complete iu all its sani
tary arrangements, and well kept.
We find tlie county poor house well kept,
hut buildings need some repair; we also find
the apartments for the white inmates very
poorly supplied with bedding and eliaiis.
and earnestly recommend that the deficien
cy be supplied; we would rocommed that
the salary of the keeper lie $15 per month
for the coming year.
We report the billowing roads and bridges
as ill need ot attention : Big Creek bridge on
Irwinville mud, plank rotten: Flat leg
bridge near Chastain’s, fallen in; Walden
bridge, plank rotten; bridge on Aucilla riv
er near Grooverville, plank rotten ; County-
line road from 1 mile post to Oquiney creek,
bad condition; extension of Cairo and Och-
lockonee road front Bodifords mill to line
ot Spence district near R. C. Cain s, in rery
bad condition : the road Irom W. I,. Hud
son to W. R. Singletary, known ns the New
ton road, in Intel condition.
We recommend that court houses suitable
for holding jnstice courts, elections, Ac., be
built at all precincts in the county, where
they have not already been provided for.
Wc have not examined the books of the
various county officials, for the reason that
this duty properly belongs to the jury chos
en for the spring term.
Wc recommend thnt J. If. Norton be ap
pointed a Notary Public and cx. ofi. J. P.,
for the 1227 Ochlockonec district.
We recommend that the jury fees and
bailiff foes for the ensuing year lie the same
as for the present year.
Wc beg to call the attention of the next
legislature ti the urgent and pressing neces
sity for the establishment of some suitable
institution for the punishment of juvenile
erimina'.s. It has come Jo our knowledge
that felonies have been committed by child
ren whose tender age preclude the propriety
ol sending them to associate with the hard
ened criminals of the penitentiary. Still,
the boldness and frequency ot their crimes,
require that a penalty of some character
should be visited upon them.
This matter has been a source of great
embarrassment to the courts nnd juries, and
we recommend that our individual repre
sentatives in the legislature devise some
plan of velief.
Wc take grent pleasure in expressing our
very earnest and sincere desire thnt Ilis Hon
or, Judge Hanscll, shall be his own succes
sor. Ripe in years, in honor and in wis
dom, ha is preeminently an upright judge,
and in bis keeping and under bis guard, pri
vate rights arc sacred nnd safe, nnd public
rights nre secure. Ilis public services nnd
liia private worth alikt, entitle him ton con
tinuance of that full mersure of public con
fidence and esteem which he has enjoyed in
the years that are gone.
We recommend thnt these presentments
be published in the several papers published
in the county.
Wc re'urn our thanks to the various offi
cers of the court for their attention and uni-
form courtesy toward Ibis body.

Washington, Oct. 29.—The annu
al report of the f~ommissioner of In
dian Affairs is made public. It makes
a printed volume ot 131 pages, or suf
ficient to fill about 36 columns ol or
dinary newspaper. It states that the
system of education for Indians and
the breaking up of their tribal rela
tions, is proving very valuable and ac
ceptable to all parties concerned.
A pub'ic school system for Indian
children is rapidly being pushed for
ward and its value is now being recog
nized by many of the Indians, who are
asking for more s hools. The sys em
of al'ott ng lands in severalty is also
proving valuable'and generally accept
able, and many Indians are clamoring
for a right to have homes of their own
and become citizens.
