The I’iney Woods opens to-day.
The rain yesterday was most wel
come.
Mr. 1'. B. (udson and wife, of Chi
cago, are at the Stuart.
Two weeks before another enter

Mr. E. 0. Williams, of Tallahassee,
Fla., was among the strangers in the
city yesterday.
Mr. J. M. Hurst, Jr., of Pelham,
was in the city yesterday. He regis
tered at the Gulf.
Mrs. James Drake and children have
returned from a visit of a couple of
months to relatives in Kentucky.
Don’t forget Steycrman in the rack
et over cheap goods, lie has piles of
first class goods, ami he’s se’ling them.
Every one is still complaining of
the general tightness of money, but
are looking farword to a change after
new year.
The ground is being put in condi
tion for the erection of a handsome
residence by Mr. Hal! Parker, on one
of the Smith lots, fr Jilting l’uradise
Park.
A dispatch lrom Tallahassee says
that the surveyors have started to
moke a final survey of the line of the
new road lrom Tallahassee to Thom-

The “Out ol Sight-’ Company which
would have opened the theatrical sea -
son here but for an accident to Frank
McNish, the leading actor, and had to
disband temporally, is on the road
again.
The show and merry go-rounds, on
Madison street, seem to be doing a
good business, jndgiug from the cowd
usually around the ground at all
hours of the day and part of the
night.
Owners of cows sliouid remember
that the stock law is now in force.
December ist is the date for the law
to go into effect Herjafler all stock
found loose on the streets will be put
in the city pound until owner pays the
cost for keeping ahem.
The display windows at Jerger’s
present a dazzling array of beautiful
things. Diamonds and all the latest
novelties in jewelry and holiday goods
tempt ihe passer-by, who is compelled
to stop and admire the display of pret-
tp goods, prettily arranged.
A party of twenty-six came over
from Bainbridge lust night aud occu
pied three rows of seals at “Si Per
kins.” After the show n wine
and game supper was enjoyed at the
Gulf, and the entire party voted a
splendid trip, and one to be repeated
again soon.
An Appeal to the Women of the
South.
We, the ladies of the “Jackson
Memorial Association" of Lexington,
Va , having in charge the completion
of the monument to our great confed
erate leader, Stone wall Jackson,
prompted by the greatness of the un
dertaking, appeal for aid t> the wo
men of the South.
Four thousand dollars are needed,
and we arc sure tlint every true
hearted southerner will feel it a privi
lege to assist in this great work. Wc
propose to open a bazar in Lexington
Dec. 15, and beg you to send as much
contributions as enn he collected by
that date. Money, materials and
manufactured articles will be most
thankfully received.
The splendid bronze statue of Jack-
son, designed by Valentine,is finished;
and, asithe unveiling uf this monu
ment is to take place on July- 21,
1891, the thirtieth anniversary of the
battle of First Manassas, we are strain
ing every nerve to raise the money
necessary for the erection of a suita
ble pedestal, under which will be a
vault, where the remains of the great
soldier will lie.
Remembering your hearty and
generous response to a like appeal of
five years ago, when, by means of a
bazar, 82,000 was raised, we feel con
fident of securing your help in this
our hour of need.
An eflbrt is being made to get free

boxes sent to us, and of this you will

Beckwith and Booth.
Louisville Courier- Join-uni.
One of the warmest friends of the
late Bishop Beckwith, of Georgia, was
Edwin Booth. They were at college
together, and afterward studied elocu
tion from the sa nc master. On oc-
count of this was the general mistaken
assertion at one time made that ihe
Bishop was a disciple of the great ac
tor. On one occasion, .Bishop Beck
with stated, he was in New York city
at a time when Mr. Booth was there.
They had no. seen each other since
their school days. On learning that
Bishop Beckwith was in the city, Mr.
Booth sent him an invitation to be
present in a box at one ol the perfor
mances. The Bishop accepted, and
on the following Sundav the great ac
tor was present at Grace Church to
listen to his friend. As soon as die
services were over, so great was the
actor’s admiration for the eloquent di
vine that he hastened to the vestry
room, and, seizing die Bishop bv both
hands, exclaimed: “You are one of
us, and should belong to our profes
sion.”

As Christmas approaches one natur
ally begins to think of the innumera
ble articles to be purchased, and the
first tiling that seems to puzzle them
is, where to get them? Why, at Jer
ger’s, of course, for two reasons: one is
—you can find anything there for any
kind of gift, appropriate for holiday,
anniversary, complimentary or souve
nir presents: the other is, he lias ca
tered to suit all purses, and as his
stock is so large and varied, you will
find anything there, consequently it
will not be necessary to go elsewhere.
It would be impossible to enumerate
the diflereut articles, for anything can
be had. Facts arc indisputable and
