Pattstown, Pa-, had a disastrous

ness houses were burned.
The great clothing house of J. B

destroyed by fire on the 13th. Boss
$400,000, insurance $200,000.
Mr. F. H. Richardson, of the Ma-
con Telegraph, will go to Atlanta on
January, 10ih;to take editorial chargo
ot the Atlanta Evening Journal.
This means a long shoot forward for
the Journal.
Mr. Stephens A. Ryan, a well known
Atlanta merchant, took out a life poli
cy in the New York Life last Siturdav
for $100,000. This is said to be one
of the largest life policies ever written
in the south.
Tbo house has passed a bill giving
every widow of a deceased coufeder
ate soldier, from Georgia, a pension of
§100. There was no volo against it
in the house, and it will probably pass
the senate unanimously.
The people of Americns are making
n vigorous effort to have Judge Allen
Fort appointed ns railroad commit-
sioucr. Judge Fort has the credit of
bting one of the first and strongest
workers for getting up the commission
and is an able lawyer.
The United States court at Macon
started in last Monday to try Luther
A. Hall land others for conspiracy
and murder of Mr. Forsyth, in Dodge
county. The court bad only ob
tained seven jurors in tho case up to
Saturday evening. “Justice steps
with leaden heel," but there is a pros
pect that the iron hand will strike
before the cases is finished.
A few days ago an old darky was
repairing the bottom portion of the
brick curbing in a sixty foot well in
Milledgeville, when the curbing sud
denly gave way and the entire wall
except about 10 feet, came down on
him A force was organized and the
work of excavating speadily begun
In about seven hours the old mau was
unearthed and found absolutely ur.
hurt. This is one instance when it
paid to be bard headed.
The spectacle of a South' Carolina
Legislature, composed almost exclu
sively of white men who call them
selves Democrats,driving noble old
Wade Hampton to his political grave
is bumilating indeed, Men have
lost their heads in Carolina most as 1
suredly. A reaction is apt to follow
the hot-headed and short-sighted
policy which proposes to put the
man Irby in the United State! Senate
instead of Wtfle Hampton. This is
another movement, we suppose, to
step on “old Confederate generals,”
and deride their scars—Valdosta
Times.
Business Improving—The South
More Than Holding Her Own.
New York, Dec. 12.—R. G
Dunn & Co.’s weekly review of trade
issued today, says: “Tho business
outlook is more hopeful. But the
past disturbance and continuing
certainty arc felt in a reduced volume
of business throughout the countr
which though slightly larger than a
yea. - ago, no longer shows the matori
al increase until recently maintained.
The south report! fair business, in
spite of the continuing decline in
cotton. Spirits move freely at Sa
vannah, oranges nt Jacksonville, and
sugar, molasses and rice at 'New Or
leans, all'at good prices. The supply
ot money is ample for the necessities
at New Orleans, hut at other points
money is tight.
“At the west colder weather had
helped trade at Cincinnati, Detroit
and some other points, but business
is only fair-nt Denver, good at Kan
sas City, strong at St. Louis and fair
at St. Paul. At Chicago business
continues much larger than last year.
At Pittsburg the worst is thought to
he over, though .iron has declined
and there is less demand for manu
factured products. Philadelphia
notes little improvement, though jew
elry is active nt narrow margins < f
profit • and less ^complaint than was
expected is heard in the clothuig
trade. The shoe trade notes a sharp
falling of! especially in the southern
demand. Boston observes nu im
proved demand for leather at lower
prices, and retail dry goods active
for the seasonable products, but wool
sales are small and wholesale sales
generally quiet.
The Pessimist.
If the Lord left any snakes in Para
dise after the <ettlement of the primal
fuss they took the shape of the
man who is a confirmed cynic and pes
simist. The man who lias nolaith, no
enthusiasm, no candor, no sentiment.
The man who laughs at the mention
of good in the world, or virtue in wo
men, or honor among men. The man
who calis his wife a fool because she
teaches his little children to say their
prayers, and curls his lip at any belief
in a world beyond the gtave. The man
who has never seen anything worth
admiring in the sky when the dawn
touches it, or the stars illuminate it, or
the clouds sweep it, or the rain iolds it
in gray mists of silence.
The man who lives in this sparkling,
shin'ng world as a frog lives in a pond
or a toad in a ccllaV, only to croak and
spit venom. The man who never saw
anything in a rose aglir.t in the sun
light or in a lilly asleep in '.he moon
light but a species of useless vegetable,
the inferior of the cabbage and the on
ion. The world is overfull of such
men, and Jif I had the right sort of
broom I’d sweep them aiffty as the
new “girl sweeps spiders.-‘Chicago
Hera'd. "
More sugar is now made from beets
then from BUgar cane, and tho results
>f the beets-8ugar industry at Grand
[aland, Neb., havo encouraged the
rormerswho are interested in beet
rugnr in the belief that it is possible
to make the sugar-beet industry a
profitable one in this country. Over
iixtecn tons of beets can be grown
in* an acre, and they serve not only
tor the production of sugar, but also
is feod for stock in the pulpy condi
tion. Discoveries and inventions are
rapidly cheapening the cost, and in a
tow more yeart there is n possibility
>f sugar-beet factories springing up in
ill sections.

New Route to tho South.
Knoxville, Tenn., Dec. 13.- -A
new through train over the Knoxville
Southern railroad from here to Allan
ta goes on in the morning. This is a
new route south from Louisville, Ky.,
in connection with the Knoxville,
Cumberland Gap and Louisville rail
road. Through sleepers are now run
ning to Louisville. The new route
between the Not Ik and the f^outh • is
called the “Cumberland Gap” route.
The Force Bill-
There seems to be a strong prospect
now that the iniquitous attempt by
President Harrison and his friend
Reed to take control of the election
and have their strickers count the bal
lots their way, will break down in i
day or two. There are yet a few Re
publican senators who consider them-
stlves the servants of (the people, and
do not believe boss Reed and Harri
son lo be all tho f people.
