DEWEY STANDS BY SCHLEY.
But Benhamand Ramsey Are Against
Him—The People Will Accept
Dewey’s Verdict—End of
a Celebrated Case.
. Washington, Dec. 13.—The most
prolonged, interesting and im
portant naval tribunal ever held
in this country came to a close to
day, baviDg in open and secret
session lasted three months, short
of one week, when Secretary Long
wae handed the findings of the
coart of inquiry which inquired
into the conduct of Rear Admiral
Schley daring the Santiago cam
paign. For seven weeks the court
heard testimony and for folly a
month it- deliberated npon that
mass of evidence, finally reaching
the conclusions announced today.
Admirals Benham and Ramsey
reports against 8cbley and Dewey
filee a minority report fully vin
dicating Admiral Schley.
Admiral Dewey sayk:
"In the opinion of the under-
aigned the passage from Key
West to Cienfuegos was made by
the Flying Squadron with all pos
sible dispatch, Commodore Schley
having in view the importance of
arriving off Cienfuegos with as
much coal as possible in the ships'
bunkers.
"The blockade off Cienfuegos
was effective.
Commodore Schley, in permit
ting the steamer Adnla to enter
the port of Cienfnegos, expected
to obtain information concerning
the Spanish squadron from her
when she came oat.
"The passage from Cienfnegos
to a point about twenty-two miles
eonth of Santiago was made with
as much dispatch as was. possible
while keeping the squadron a unit
'The blockade of Santiago was
effective. *
"Commodore Schley was the
senior officer of our squadron off
Santiago when the Spanish squad
ron. attempted to escape on the
morning ot July 3, 1898. He was
in absolute command and is enti
tled to the credit due to such com
manding officer for the glorious
victory which resulted in the total
destruction of the Spanish ships
“George Dewey,
Admiral U S. N.
"Sam C. Lemly,
Judge Advocate Gen., U. S. N.”
When the conclusions of Admir
al Dewey were read to him Ad
miral Sebley showed bis pleasure
and it was evident from hie man
ner that he regarded the state 1
moots from Admiral Dewey as a
vindication of bie course.
He declined to make any state,
meat concerning the csnrt’s find
iogs, and excusing himself from
the little company which bad
gathered about him, weot to his
apartments,where Mrs. Sebley bad
been anxiously awaiting to hear
the court’s decision.
It is said at the Navy Depart
ment that there will' be no further
proceedings in this celebrated case
on the department’s initiative. *

Re has spared neither pains or ex
pense in putting this well-known
winter resort hotel in the very
best possible order for the reception
and entertainment of guests.
Kvery room in the hotel has been
overbanled, and* made ready for
the comfort of the patrons. The
splendid dining room has been
retouched and presents a most at
tractive appearance. In fact,
notbiug has been overlooked by
Mr. Reid, wbicb would add to the
comfort and convenience of gnests.
They will find the Mitchell a
home li'ke hotel, and the service,
in every department, aH that
could be asked or desired. The
indications are that the season
now opening in the south will be
a successful one, and the Mitchell
ie very sure, under the present
admirable management, to do its
full share of the business.
A Sheriff and Negro Shot.
We learn from Mr. Dan Hecbt,
who was present and saw the duel,
that Sheriff Edwards, of Gadsden
county, Florida, and a negro were
both shot in a deadly duel at close
quarters yesterday juet beyond
Climax, on the River Jonotion
branch of the Plant 8ystem. It
seeme that the sheriff was guard
ing a negro prisoner whom he had
arrested for some crime. 8ome
eight or ten shots were fired at
close range. The train pulled off
and left both the wounded men
where they fell. It is likely that
both will die.
We learn later that the railroad
authorities sent an engine aud
crew back to the scene of the
shooting and foond the sheriff and
negro both dead.
Cold weather is at hand. No
donbt about that. If you would
keep warm at a moderate expense
read Col. J. W. Dillon’s ad about
coal. He ie handling the best in
the market.
The little folks are snuggling np
mighty close to 8anta Claus these
days.
