sis is nothing more or less than a
display of public spirit and town
pride, which, while it might be turn

11! note.
We are indeed glad to see t.ie
staid, conservative people of Thom-
asville get into the game with the
same good will and enthusiasm as
their neijhbors have. We hope
that the spirit of the great Ameri
can game will prove benelicinl and
that this enthusiasm, now thor
oughly aroused, will be the means
of inciting the same kind of get-up
and hustle for the other and more
profitable things.
Meanwhile, Tkomasvllle ought to
be In the game for the attendant
trophy. The test of the towns comes
this week and Monday, when the
number of paid admissions to the
ball game will be counted and re.
ported, the winner to get a silver
cup. The other towns are no lxr-
ger or just a little larger than
Thomasville, and they are all hus
tling. If the people here will at
tend this one game and make a
creditable showing, they will never
be sorry of it.

THE NEW OWEN DILI
Senator Owen has Intro:-'cl a
revised bll\ providing for a na
tional Department of Health. The
new bill goes back to the original
plan and provides for a Department
of Health with a secretary in the
cabinet. It is by far the best meas
ure which has yet been presented on
this subject. It contains all of the
strong points of preceding bills
without aiy of the objections
which previous bills were- subject.
The return to a plan foT a Depart
ment of Health is commendable,
the United States Public Health
Service we already have a strong,
efficient and rapidly developing bu
reau. In ordar to justify Itself to
the friends of advanced health leg'
islatlon, any proposed change must
provide for something larger, bet
ter and stronger than the existing
health machinery. The movement
for a department has gained
strength enormously during the
past three years. The opposition to
it has crystallized in t\ constantly
diminishing group of objectors,
while public support for such a
measure has been growing ns Its
object and purposes have been bet
ter understood.
The silly objections which were
at first raised against the measure
have been completely met. The cb-
Tbc Times expected twenty-five,. ,,,, . , ,
tabllshment of a national Depar'.-
hundred people to attend the game
in that city Thursday. The crowd
from here would have been larger
if a special had been run by the
Coast Line to bring tne folks back
by eight o'clock.

nient of Health will not and cannot
create a "medical trust.” It can
not interfere with the righta of any
citizen or with the authority of any
state. It cannot have anytning to
do with the individual treatment of
disease or with the administration
of drupa. These facts have been-
proved repeatedly to the satisfaction
of all those who really wish to know
the truth. The only objectors left
are those who are too Ignorant to
i)e able to understand, too fanatical
to desire to understand, or too mer
cenary to care for anything except
the possibility of interference with
• their private gains. The educational
| value of the efforts that have been
i made in the past are well worth the
I cost. The Journal of the America 1
i Medical Association thinks that the
i prospects for the passage of the
j Owen’s bill are more favorable now
than ever before.
