HAVANA RESTAURANTS
TIRE OF CAFE LOUNGERS
Havana, Cuba, Nov. 18.—(By
Mail) High rents pre successfully
supplementing tbe futile attempts of
the law to eliminate the more undesir
able features of that ancient Latin
institution—the corner cafe loafer.
Taking their cue from the high
officiency cigar sfores and quick
lunch counters of the United States,
several {lavana cafe ownerd, who
paying top prices for choice
locations, have rid themselves of the
drones who crowd their establish
ments and drive away clients.
They have removed the convenient
tables and chairs, enlarged their ban
and counters where coffee and other
refreshments are served, and adopt
ed other methods to assure quick
service and speedy profits. The
group of domino players who spent
about SO cents a day and occupied
the best table, baa been forced to
The political orator soon tires
if he cannot sit down occasionally.
The whole tribe of loiterers finds it
hard to pass a few hours in a cafe
where the bar is swabbed continually
with a wet cloth, to the detriment of
carelessly placed elbows, and white
shoes suffer from a constantly
ing mop.
While the pratice has improved
sales and increased profits, nobody
yet has endeavored to learn whether
the reform has pleased the weaker
sex. It is a common belief that the
first time a Cuban matron runs the
irauntlet In front of any one of the
popular down town cafes without
exciting comment from the gallants
lounging there, she goes home to
weep for her lost youth and feminine
fascination.
SWEDEN AND BALTIC STATES
CONTINUE LONG FRIENDSHIPS
Stockholm, Nov. I (By Mail)
An illustration of t'-.e law of histori.
cal affinity is seen In the growing
rapproachment" between Sweden
and Esthonia and Latvia, the newly
created republics on the Baltic East
Coast These two republics were
largely settled by vikings about one
thousand years ago, and in the time
of Gustavus Adolphus swore allegu
to the Swedish crown. They
were under Swedish rule for one
hundred and fifty years until 1710,
when they were conquered by Russia.
But the Letts and Eathonians still
speak of the "good old Swedish
times”. This tradition of kinship
with Sweden now expresses itself ia
constant attemps to get closer to*
gether culeurally politically, and fi
nancially.
Thua the University of Dorpat in
Estonia, founded by Sweden in 1632,
has just added the sixth Swedish
professor to its faculty, and various
courses in the Swedish language
being given. Meanwhile the groups
of teachers and pupils, farmers and
others are coming over to viait Swe
den.
The Swedish people were among
the first to encourage these republics
in their hard fight for national ex
istence, and they have sent
ilief expeditions to work among the
inhabitants left destitute by the
many years of war an dthe suffering
thru many centuries of object servi
tude under the rule of the local
bility of German decent, the ‘Baltic
Baron’A an dundeij the Russian
czarist regime.
Trade relations between Sweden
and the new Baltic states have devel
oped rapidly since the ws
number of steamship lines
maintaining regular service between
Riga, Reval, and Swedish ports.
ENGLISH WOMEN ARE
ADVISED TO SMOKE PIPES
Londen, Oct. 23. (By Mail)
English physicians are urging women
!io are addicted to smoking,
pipe and good tobacco instead of
the cigarette. The doctors point
that the nicotine found in the
cheaper brands of cigarettes Is much
•e injurious to women than to
i, and they declare that the per
fumes and scents used in brands
prepared for their fair sex also are
Injurious >■ _ |
Two Tecent deaths of women have
been attributed directly to cigarette
smoking. While these cases have
been due to excessive smoking, the
physicians say that the same amount
of pipe smoking would not have had
fatal results.
Smoking among women i n London
now almost universal, and one
rarely goes to a theatre, dance or
restaurant where the majority of the
women present are not smoking.
Recently two young women ap
peared at an athletic meet smoking
pipes, and many of tho fashionable
shops of Bond Street have exhibited
'stocks of pipes designed for the
PENNSYLVANIANS GET
COAL FROM RIVERS
Harrisburg, Penn., Dec. 11.—The
coal problem this winter ia one only
of strong arm muscles and a vehicle
—wheelbarrow, hone and wagon,
motor truck—for aome of those
Pennsylvanians whose homes
the banks of streams which flow from
the hard coal regions.
River-coal—so-called because it is
found in the beds of these rivers—
is the solution. The coal, in the
form of small particles, finer than the
grade known commercially as buck-
wheat, has been used for yean, large
ly by manufacturing plants, but the
fear of shortage this year has in
creased household consumption, and
many persona living along the
streams in which it ia found
gathering their own supply with the
of a shovel and a cart or automo
bile for transportation.
Tho coal 1a mainly the product of
culm or refuse banka in tha vicinity
of mines further up the streams. It
is found in the Lehigh, Schuylkill and
Susquehanna rivers down which it
has been washed in the years
anthracite mining was begun in
Pennsylvania. In many sections of
these rivers beds several feet thick
have existed, but commercial dredg.
ing and pumping operation* c
bined with greater conservation
the part of mining companies is
ducing the supply.
Householders who hove gathered
their own winter fuel from the rivers
have found the coal frequently in
eddies near the shore, where it has
been necessary only to shovel it
living near the Susquehanna
in the vicinity of Harrisburg, has ob
tained a complete winter supply at
only the coat of transportation.
Commercially the coal sella for about
$3 a ton. Forced draft la required
for Its use In household furnaces, and
when so used it produces, it is said,
much or more heat than the
grades commonly sold for household
use.
More than a half-million tons of
river coal, valued at nearly $700,000
were recovered from the Schuylkill
Susquehanna and Lehigh
commercial operations during 1921,
state reports show.
