TheJcorn contest, conducted by The
ThomaaviUe Shoe Company, Olfuroh-
wolland Oo., J. P. Evanj and Nod
Brothor* closed Wednesday. A quart
jar of corn was exhibitod at each of
those places, end the closest guess to
the number of grains in the gallon was
entitled to receive a prize of $100, the
2nd oiosest $60, the a next $26 eaob, the
6 next $10 each, the 20 next $6 each,
the 40 uekt $2.60 each, the 60 next $1.00
each
The content was a great success and
thousand^ of gausses wore made. The
committee of Judges mot at an early
hour in the Citizens Bank and were
busy until j four o'clock counting the
corn and. arranging’ the guesses. The
work was done carefully and they
guarantee its correctness. Though the
two winning guosaes were identical, no
ono guessed the exact number. Owing
to the lateness of the hour of finishing
the count the various guessos are not
given. The firms state that any oue
on the following list of winners can se
cure his or her prize by calling at the
Citizens’ Bank where a check for the
amouut due will be given. When (a
number follows a name, “Mrs. Peuny
Walton, 6,” it snows that the person
has won that number of the prizes in
the class meutioned. The judges

mortar-board caps. They were on their
way to their homes in and near Quit-

CHANGES MAOE
IN FIRE DEPARTMENT
On yesterday December first, several (
important ohanges were made in the
Thomasville Fire Department. The
resignation of Chief W. M. Singletary
took effect and his place was filled by
the promotion of B O. Blanton, former
assistant chief. Mr. Oscar Lee was pro
moted from the ranks to assistant's
place. Mr. Sterling Sanford who has
for several mouths been a member of
the department resigned yesterday
^Che departure of Me srs. Singletary
and Sauford left vacant two places
which were filled by the appointment of
Messrs. O. B. Linsou and Ourtla Brown,
Both these young men have had some
experience infighting the flames and
their friends predict that they w*U make
efficient firemen. Chief Blanton begins
his administration with good prospects.

tion Sends Him Back.
Three, hundred and uinetoen voters
wero sufficiently interested in the race
for justice of the peace in the 637th
district, to go to' tho polls and express
their opinion Saturday. This unusual
ly large vote wns due to an interesting
triangular raco, wh ch ended in the re-
election of tho prosent efficient justice,
John W. H. Mitchell.- He roceived^tHe
handsome vote of {200. “Run like
Roosevelt" as his friends expross it.

The voters like other men like a little
nonsense now and then and seized npon
this race as an opportunity to have
some fnu. As many as eight men le
reived unsolicited votes. Tills strag
gling vote in all amounted to 68, and
much to his surprise one
got as many as 46. Mr. Blalock had

Mrs. B. B. Goldberg and family, of
New York have rented the Davies cot
