COTTON MEN
ENTHUSIASTIC
Elect Old Officers And
Appoint Delegates To
State Convention.
From Sunday’s Issue.
The Thomas county division of the
Southern Cotton Growers’ Associa
tion held their meeting at the court
house hero yesterday morning. Ev
ery man present was heartily inter
ested in the success of the association
and a number of enthusiastic speech
es were made. That of J. 8. Ward,
Jr., was especially enjoyed.
The meeting was presided over by
Capt. N. L. flpengler, the president
The first business of tho das
election of a president and secretary
for tho coming year. Tho present
efficient officers, N. L. Spengler, and
E. R. Whaley were unanimously re
elected. Tho county will bo repre
sented by eight delegates at tl^e
state convention to be held la At
lanta on the third of January. Those
named wore all representative men
and aro ns follows: E. L. Neel.
ThomASvllle; J. 3. Ward - , Jr., Ocji-
lockoneo; lion Comfort, Boston;
Thomas Lowls, Glasgow; A. S. Bras
well, Meigs; A. A. Way, Ways; Dr.
J. F. Harris, Pavo; and W. B. Rod-
denbery, Cairo. Tho business to be
transacted by tho body to which
these gentlemen are delegates Is of
tho utmost Importance. President
Spongier urges each of them to make
n special effort to attend tho mooting
In Atlanta. It seemed to bo tho
sentiment of the people present
tho price of 15 conts set by President
Jordan was none too high. Tho nd-
vanco in the prlco of all commodities
tho high price and scarcity of labor
and a number of other circumstances
lead tho growers to beliovo that tho
prlco named Is a Just and reasonable
one.
GROWERS WILD WIN.
Iordan fiends Out Cheering Inter"
view on Cotton Situation.
New Orleans, Dec. 2.—“Everything
Is moving along with ontlro satisfac
tion and It looks ns If we wero going
to win In our offorts to tie up tho
most of the balance of the erop,"
thus writes Prosldont Harvlo Jordan
jt the Southern Cotton Association
to a leading
leans, after soiAo ton days of actlvo
campaigning for the purpose of ty
ing up threo ralllon bales of cotton
and inducing the growers to hold for
15 cents. Tho upward tendoncy of
the staplo since then, augmented by
tho glnners* report and tho fact that
a poworful speculative clement, act
ing Independently. Is conducive tc
the bolief that tho Southern Cotton
Association will accomplish Its aim.
Mr. Jordan has mado It perfectly
and forcefully clear however, that
the speculative side has nothing what
ever to do with tho movement, furth
er than natural coincidence and the
president of tho Southern Cotton
Association declares that neither he
or the association will have any-
.lng to do with tho speculators.
Mr. Jordan states that tho assocla-
will immediately send out blank
ye8 to all who write for thorn to
*ta headquarters.

COOLIDGE ON A BOOM.
Bank Organized, School Prospers
and New Buildings Planned.
That the town of Coolidge is grow-
ing very rapidly Is a fact that no ons
will dispute. Only a very fsw years
ago the place that Is now Coolldgs
was comparatively a forsst.
The latest imrovement to the town
and to tho community as well is ths
bank which is now fully organized.
The stockholders met on the 22d Inst
and elected the following officers*.
For president. Dr. W. H. Crow; for
vice president, W. A. J. Parrsmore;
for cashier, P. G. Mallory. Mr. W.
8. Wltham, the well known banker
is financial Agent for the bank. This
gives the bank a financial backing
equal to that of any of the large city
banks. At the above stated meeting
tho late feature in banking—depos
itors insurance—was fulyl discussed
and the stockholders unanimously
accepted this feature. The bank
carries lire Insurance, burglar insur
ance, fidelity insurance and the de
positors Insurance. The building
which Is on the corner of Pine
street and Japonlca avenue will soon
bo complete and the bank will them
open for business.
The citizens of the tows and ce:
munity are now talking very seri
ously of building a brick warehouse.
This of course will not be done until
later. One can safely predict, how
ever that the town will have a good
warehouse by next fall. This will
bo a great help to the town and espe
cially to the farmer who wishes te
hold his cotton or sirup.
We understand that Messrs. If. J.
White and J. I>. Baldy of the
firm of White & Baldy contemplate
putting up a largo jbrlck building In
which they will carry a full line.of
general merchandise and furniture.
Messrs. White & Baldy are good
folks and we are glad to see their
progress.
Wo feel safe in saying that the
town will soon be furnlsred with ar
tesian water.
School will open on the first Mon
day In January under the able man
agement of Prof. Reese. We have
good building And a good teaeher
therefore we are going to have a
good school.
The pospects for Coolidge are that
within a very few years we will have
ono of tho most prosperous towns la
the State.

HOST OF
ILLITERATES
Washington, Dec. 1.—According
to a report laaued by the census bu
reau, 100 persons out of 1,000 In the
United States over 10 years old, aro
unable to write. Of the native white
population only 46 out of every lr
000; of the foreign born whites 128
out of every 1,000 and of tho negroes
445 out-of every 1,000 nre Illiterate.
The statistical evidence la that' 1 Illit
eracy Is steadily being reduced; In
1890 the number of Illiterates per
1,000 was 133 for the total popula
tion 63 for the native white popula
tion, 130 for the foreign born white
and 668 for negroes, Indians and
Mongolians.
Illiteracy la in general greater In
the South than In the. North for alt
classes of the population. Perhaps
the fairest basis of comparison be
tween th* two sections la that for na
tive whit* children living In cltle*
of over 25,000 Inhabitants. In the
North Atlantic divisions the Illiter
acy for this elasa of children la 2.1
and Iff tho north central, 1.0; In In
the south Atlantic It Is 8.2 and In
tb* «outh central, 12.7.
