est supply of bones came from the
13 battlefields, as the war had recently
ended and they were covered with
hones of horses killed during the
fighting. Battlegrounds were rich
fields and carloads of bones were
collected and shipped to Maxeys.
Bone dust is unquestionably one of
the best and most enduring ingre
dients fo» a fertilizer known, and
they added greatly to the value of
the Maxeys goods- My impression
is that one reason for discontinuing
the factory was the supply of bones
being exhausted, and nothing could
he found to take its place.

But I remember that a charge
was made and published in the pa- • 8e nt.
pers that this factory was grinding f May
the ones of our dead soldiers and [July
selling them as fertilizer. I asked
the manager of the factory if there
was any truth in this charge. He
said he had grpund up hundreds of
carloads of bones collected on bat
tlefields and instructed his men f»
watch out for human bones, and
they never found but one, a thigh
bone, and which wa# buireJ near
the works. The owners of this fac

served through the war, and were
the last men to permit such a

It was with the use of this Max

made the record-breaking wheat
crop. Farmers used this fertilizer
only under cotton and Mr. Bailey
wished to prove to them that it
would pay under any crop, and he
selected an acre which he planted in
wheat and fertilized it with Max
