MACON, Ga.—Threats to kill hi*

Lockhart Friday a short time be
fore his home was partially burned
and his wife "sustained’ Injuries
whkh resulted In her death later
in a local hosn’tal. according to
a statement of Mrs. M. A. Sinclair,
a neighbor, made here Saturday.
l^ockhart is being held on &
charge of murder and arson fol
lowing instructions of the coron
er’s Jury. On the night of the fire
Mrs. Sinclair «ald Lockhart’s lit
tle son, John, came running to her
house with the statement that -Lis
father had threatened to kill the
whole family.
Lockhart was taken into custody
at the emergency room of the hos*
pital, where he had been with hit
wife when the six and one-half-
pound baby was horn four hours
after the mother sustained bum*
that later caused her death.
He was first placed in the city
barracks under two charges, each
of drunkenness and disorderly con
duct.
The fire, v-hlch wag confined to
the lied occun’ed by Mrs. Lock-
hart, Was discovered by'a man
named Garner, who lives next
door, and, according to hlfe storj
to the coroner’s Jury, lie rushed to
the Lockhart home and was met
at the door by Lockhart, who In

At first doctors believed there
was no chance of Mrs. Batson's re
covering. , She has not been able

The tragedy came Thursday
night tvhen Batson Is said to hnv
iecosted his wife, from whom he
pad been estranged, and insisted
that be* he allowed to accompany
her and a girl friend to a movlo.
When she refused this, permission
he started jdashing with his pock-
etknlfe. He» then went to his fath
er’s home, obtained n pistol and
took his own life. Funeral services
for Batson were to be held Satur
day afternoon.
