Home Supplies for Market. v ?
Kid that it may lie profitable

t leaving asU'e the question of
urgent need of home supplies
use at home when needed and
jklng at it from a dollar and
lilts standpoint! We will assume a
ise, a farmer in Clarke county

neighbors thought likewise

, Homs Supplies Plus A Cash
Crop: Wo hvae said, "Tho produc.
of home supplies (a a thing
Itself, MR. .sufficient.' Also,
f fcave seen that there aro years
conditions when the surplur
u homo supplies can not be
teted profitably. Therefore
producJi'on of home supplies
l some supplies only Is very
[sly to bo Insufficient to make
bnlng profitable. In fact, this lias
fen the experience of the past
The prouction of home supplies Is
tho foundation of farmthg, not only
hero but mbat everywhere. TJif
wheat farmers of tho northwest are
Buffeting todny because of the lack
of this thing. There inay bo ex*
ceptlons to this in tho dtse of high-,
ly specialized crops as apples,
peaches, grapes, etc., but general*
ly It Is true.
Hut after this has been put into
th6 plans of farming it is very
necessary thht the farmers of this
time and in this section have t^ome
cash crop or crops .whoso produc
tion ami marketing will bring in
sufficient cash to pay taxes, in*
terest, buy todls and: make Im
provements. Generally speastnr
tfte cash crop for Clarke county!
tanners is still cotton. It produces]
a greater gross return per acre
than any other general crop Hut I
can be ra<ae<l here by the majority •
of farmers. The price of this farm j
crop has been reasonably good dur* I
jug the last six months «r seven i
years, averaging these years. It Is
a crop that most of our farmers
have had experience with, except
ag the phase of boll weevil con
itol. ami cadi year we aft* getting
.uoro experience with this phase.
.Now, tho production of home sup
plies for homa uso and in cddl
ton cotton lev u ca*h crop, is often
called diversified farming. For our
purpose we are going to call It
“mixed' farming.” In t’larke coun
ty, quite a number of our farmerr
have been following t‘.:ls practice
f mixed farming and doing '.t suc-
essfully. Ti| s Is especially true
ji those who give pt/sonal super
vision to their farms. The problem
>t this class of farmers, is not
necessary, and in tnuny cases at
all diversifying their cash crops,
but a problem of practical and suc
cessful production of their cash
crop .that is the making of cotton
year after year under boll weewll
conditions. They know how to pro
duce a sufficiency of their hay
crops, corn crops, of bogs, of
chickens, etc. They are working
and will continue to work on the
economic production of their cash
crop—cottoo.

This class duos not Jucludo all
of oar Clarko county farmers
Probably not over 25 per cent of
them. The members of this clasr
are, to use a term of commou
slang, “fed up” on hearing about
^'versification. On close study ’it
Is easy to seo why this is. They
so situated and hav^ so
‘•pitched” their work »» to make
the production of cash crops, best
confined to tho production of cot
ton. »
As a rule this class of farmers
ar enot “In and outers,” that
i they do not plant a lot of com
i * nml hni- nnn vnar and very little
and bay one yeur and very little
the next. They ralso enough of
these crops every year. During
good season they have a surplus
which they n'ther feed, carry over
or well to neighbors who ar not
■»o fortunate, durlug poor years
they usually have enough.
Next week, we are planning on
(.beussing divois'Xication n f rn*h
