TIENTSIN.—Miles beyond the
rampart* of snowy peaks separat
ing the two Buddhist states of
Sikkipi and Tibet, among the
crags of the mountain* that rise
from the arid plains north of Gy-
antet, little white specks nestle in
the cliffs. These are the abode of
the nuns of the Goddeaa* Dolma,
“She who hears the cries of the
world.”
The Goddess Dolma is the Budd
hist" counterpart of the Virgin
Mary of the Christians. Her nuns
forsake the world and all it*
piedaures and. dressed In red
cloask, barefooted and with shaved
heads, they go abodt relieving
pain and sorrow. Their fare is
frugal and their lives bare of ma-
reial comforts.
A bell tolls. It is the call of
some distressed person for assist
ance, perhaps miles away. The
nuns gather. An old! abbess, kind
ly and skillful in administration
from long experience in minister
ing to mankind, directs the nuns
to their duties, With a little food
and staffs to aid them in climbing
up and down the mountains the
nuns go forth to where duty calls.
