Confirmation of the Spanifo defeat.
| The Spanifh fchooner San Jo
seph, arrived at this port on Thurf
day night, from Baracoa, in 15
days paflage ; and brings inteUT
£'■ nee ot ihr capture of Cadiz and
Madrid by Bonaparte, and the to
tal fubj gatioh of Spain and Poitu
gil to his arms. All the Britifh
force in cither country had fallen
into his hands, ? The old king
f Charles, was at Madrid* and h"d
been declared by Napoleon the le
gitimate fbvereign of Spain, and
Jofeph Bonaparte was appointed,
and a&ually afting as regent, ;
This information was learned at
Baracoa by an Engliih paper re
ceived at the Mole, .which had
been circulated in Baracoa in i
private manner. Nothing was fuf
j fered to be Paid with regard to the
affairs of Spain, tinder pain of
death. There was a difference be
tween the captain general of the
Idavanna and the fpldiery, who had
more t an ©nee attempted his life.
The French rtfidents of Baracoa,
isbout 500 in number, were all ob
liged to quit the place, on account
ct the great apprehenfion of nufla
re from the Spaniards.
The brig Amazon, capt. Copp,
a regular packet between this and
New-York, ran afhore in a fnow
ilorm on the 20th uk. a little to the
fouthward of New-York light
houfe. The cargo will be faved,
and hopes are entertained of the
vrff.i being got off without much
injury. The fhipTrue American,
Newfon, from Port-au-Prince, with
187,000 weight of coffee and 30
tons logwood, went afhore at the
fame time and place, and bilged in
a fhort time—veffel and cargo com
pletely loft-—the crew favtd them
felves by hanging to the wreck un
til next morning, when they wsrc
taken off by a pilot boat.
ch the iji. injl, approved and'Jigned
toe “ ATI to interdict the commercial
inter courje between the -United States
and Great Britain and France, and
their dependencies ; and for other pur
pejes.”
Ihe Senate took, into c onf deration
the bid from the Houfe of Refrefenta
iiveSy making appropriations for the
/upport cf the military eflablifoments
and for the navy of the United States
for the year 1809.
On motion to Jlrike out the following
words in the 6th jeftion “/cr
the fortification of ports and harbours,
in addition to thefiums heretofore appro

dollars ”
It was determined in the affirma
tive—Teas 23, Nays 6.
‘The bill from the houfe pf Reprefent
atives for impofwg additional duties

From the Whig .
By the arrival here yeffe relay of
the fchooner L’Etoile, from Gau
daloupe, we learn, that capt. R-r—,
of the fchooner Policy from Balti
more, had arrived there from L’O
rient, bringing the important news
that the French Big was every
where flying on the ramparts of
Spain. The news is brought down
to the 4“h of January. Bmapirte
had entered Madrid cn the 4th < f
December. Blb a had b*-eo ta
ken and the * 4 n *ble Eng ifh” it 13
f’uppofed would be t Pored to
France as Bonaparte hadyfflied a
proclamation to prohibit the Span
iards from aiding their efcape.—>
The Supreme Junta had fUpulated
for their own faivation, by agreeing
to facrid:e the Englifh armies,
whom they had confenced co give
up as hoftages for the completion
of their contra#. It is therefore
probable that no part of Moore’s
army can get on board tne Engiilh
flipping. Eoghfh goods to a
great amount had been feized and
conflfcated. Junot was marching
to L.ibon, at the head of a great
army.
The L’Etoile waa chafed in here
by two Englifh frigi-.ts. The En
gl, fh had attacked Martinique with
12,000 men; but were twice re
puiled. I,j one battle they luff
2,000 troops. They were never
ltfs in hopes of reducing the Bland ;
as they had tffedted a landing ; and
were greatly affifted by their fhips
which blockaded it very clofeiy.—
They had left a 74 and a brig,
which were driven on Ikon under
the French batteries, if Martin
ique *dls, Gaudaloupe, it is thought
will be immediately attacked,
