Agricultural Statistics—Re
capitulation.
Circular Xo. 4S. issued, from the
Agricultural Department of Georgia,
by Commissioner Janes and dated
Dec. 27th, 1877, is a recapitulation
and comparative statement of other
circulars made up from county re
port^ and issued by the Department
during the year, under the heading of
“ General Sta'S^Bttj^tges” theOom-
missioner says:
The reports show a slight increase
in the final total yield of Corn, Cot
ton, Sugar Cane and Sweet Potatoes
over the estimated yield of the Oct.
Report; a large increase In tlie yield
of Sorghum, and a small decrease in
Ground Peas and Chufas.
In this Circular the “ Total Yield ’’
compared to 1876, and the actual
“ Yield per Acre ” of the leading
crops, are given in detail—by sections.
Other valuable information is aggre
gated "by sections. Attention is in
vited to-these tables, as they will be
found to contain; a great amount of
valuable and interesting matter, and
will furnish many useful suggestions,
worthy of the most careful considera
tion by the farmei who is desirous of
improvement. The estimates and
opinions of hundreds of practical
tanners iruui eveny section of the
State, on the various questions that
affect our vital interests as an agricul
tural people, and which lie at the
very foundation of our prosperity,
Lave been thoroughly and carefully
di^esftid S^tl“ 'coh^Ti(raTed, and pre
sented in a condensed form. Com
ments on these tables are made, with
the view to direct the attention more
closely to the results reached in them
—suggestive in many instances of the
only sound policy which should
govern in the future. The wise far
mer will be guided by the light of
experience, and led by the wisdbm
ration of
Many are now beginning in earnest
j to adopt and practice the policy they
have long openly advocated, but
j practically repudiated—raising firm
supplies oA the farm. This policy in
years" past has' been advocated by
mai y to induce others to plant less
cotton—whilst, its advocates have
quietly enlarged their cotton fields for
.the greater harvest and higher prices.
But the higher prices face not been
attained,' and their hopes have been
disappointed.
There is -decided and increasing
tendency to diversified fanning,
stock-raising, ’fruit-growing and rais
ing smnlf grain, and a disposition to
develop the minor resources of the
farm—sorghum, sugar cane, millet,
ehuias, etc. ■ t I t

A Gentle Hint.—In our style of
climate, with its' sudden changes of
temperature—rain, 'wind and sunshine
often intermingled in a single day—it
is no wonder that our children, friends
and relatives are so frequently taken
from us by neglected coldly half the
deaths resulting^direetly from this
cause. A bottle of Boschee’s German

mediate use will prevent serious sick
ness, a large doctor’s bill, and perhaps
death, by the use of three or four doses.

Tiie Allies to thfiSpestion, “ Are
the q«
L-ne'wlly
the I'annels, ger^3By, in better or
worse condition than last winter?”
—as will appear by reference to the
Table, show that ino farmers are in
better condition in every section ex
cept Southwest Georgia, and'parti-
cu’arly so in North and Southeast
Georgia. |UTheso have been favored
with better seasons* and have pro**
dueed larger crops of Corn aud Cot
ton than the other sections of the
State. For the Slate at large, by
average of the sections, 57 per cent,
of the correspondents indicate their
condition as “better,’’ 18 as “the
samej’^ond 2& ,«» ■“ worse,” than last
winter. On the whole, it is safe to
say that the farmers of Georgia are
in better condition, in several re
spects, than at this-date last year.
There lias been a material decrease in
the amount of corn and cotton pro
duced, but, on the other hand, the
wheat crop was much better than lasc
year, the ainouut ot home-raised pork
is greater, but above all, and more
than all, closer economy has been
practiced in many of the details of
living, aud the aggregate of debt
reduced.
This improvement is not indiiated
by any material increase of money
in the farmer’s pocket, but has a
deeper and broader foundation—upon
which, prosperity may be slowly but
surely built. The farmers are gradu
ally realizing their situation—their
altered circumstances, resulting from
the revolution of labor and loss of
property. Speculative ventures in
planting cotton—to replace in a few
years the Joss of the patrimony and
