a young man, who Said'1»e n Svas TrO J m ti, and ior hik person,*dead or alive,
Santa Crux, in the 1 West Indies, ar
rived at Williamsburg and settled
there as a tobacco planter. lie had
plenty of money and was able to pur
chase about one thousand acres of
the finest soil within a short distance
of the old town.
Being apparently a gentleman in
every sense q£. the word, Mr* Suinp-
hill was admitted to the best society
in List new home, And a year lUter he
was married to Sarah Jones, a beau*
tiful heiress, the wedding festivities
being celebrated with extraordinary
pomp and splendor. In course of
time two daughters were born to the
young couple, and everybody pre
dicted a long career of cloudless hap*
piness for them. Alas! How lerribie
those bright anticipations were to be
disappointed. It was on Christinas
eve, in 1801, that a strange looking
man, in a sort of military uniform,
appeared at the house of Mr. Semp
hill, who was in Richmond at the
lime. Mrs. Semphill received the
stranger in the parior.
“Do you speak French, madam,’’
he said to her in very broken Eng
lish.
She replied in the affirmative.
“Then, madam, please send your
two nurse girls with the children out
of the room.”
She did so, and looked interroga
tively at her visitor. The latter
hesitated a moment. Then he said
in a tone of deep emotion.
’‘Poor lady, I have terrible ti lings
for you.’’
“Heavens!” she cried, turning very
pale, “my Husband—”
“Your husband is an infamous vil
lain ”
“Sir!” she exclaimed, indignantly.
“lie has basely deceived you, lie
an escaped galley slave, a thief and
a murderer
She uttered a heartrending scream.
“Do you tell me the ti nth?” she
gasped.
“lie is a Spanish .thief, and was
sent to the galleys of Barcelona for
life. lie ( madg, jus escape from

thc Governon-Gokoral offered a»large
reward. *''
One dark night a man was watch
ing the sentinels pacing in front ot
the Governor's palace, Havana. As
they turned their backs and sepa
rated for a moment the man sprang
through the entrance unobserved.
He {tossed up thu broad stairs, saluted
in an imperious stylo the guard there
stationed, and pasaed into the Gover
nor General’s room. The Governor,
engaged in writing, looked up as the
man ooolly cast aside the cloak, ex
claiming :
“Who enters unannounced f”
“One who has information of the
pirates.**
“What of them?’* said Tacon,
earnestly.
“One moment —I must not sacri-
fice myself.”
“You have naught to fear. Even
if you be one of their., yon will be
pardoned.”
“Will you pardon and reward me
if I reveal the lurking place of the
pirates, and put Marti into your
bauds ?”
“I pledge yon my word of honor,’’
said Tacon.
“Your Excellency, I am Marti.”
The cool scoundrel then entered
into an arrangement with the Gover
nor fortlio betrayal of alt'-the smug
glers and pirates. Under his gui
dance the Spanish - vessels sailed' to
the ontlaws’ hiding- places, and rap
tured those who were not slain. »:■
When Marti returned to Havana'
lie was offered the pardon, which 1 he
accepted, and money, which lie de
dined, tn lieu of the reward, lie
a-ked the monopoly of selling fish in *
Havana. It was granted, and lie;''
er<. cted a magnificent stone market. 1
When he became master of enor
mous wealth, lie built a theatre and
named it after the Governor-General
who had pardoned him.*
