The Jones Case.
Report of Auditor J. M. Pace—
, Full Statement of the Debits in
the Cask.
To the Four Winds—Heaven
Help Them!
The report of the auditor, Hon. J.
M. Pace, in the case of the State
va. John Jones, late Treasurer, cov
ers sixty densely written pages, and
indicates a minute and thorough in
vestigation into the accounts of the
Treasurer. The report debits Jones
Five weepihg children were left,
orphans the other day by the death
-of tfvej* tnqthpr, 4. widow who lived
onfro^MBo^ afreet. The father waa
kille d at pipeKif-the depots about two
years ago, and since then the mother
had kept the family together by hard
days' work. Lack of food, exposure
and worry brougltt on an illness which
terminated fatally, and the children
prior to January 1, 1872, redeemed
by Henry Clews & Co. with moneys
of the State (arising from the sale of
gold bonds of the State, known as
the seven per cent, gold quarterlies),
with $149,250 State bonds, matnred .huddled together in a corner of the
and subsequently paid by Treasurer} and held a whispered conversation.
Jones, carelessly and negligently.
$2,500 State bonds, redeemed by the
Fourth National Bank of New York
(the financial agent of the State in
New York) during the term of An-
gier, Treasurer, and improperly cred
ited to Jones, November 80, 1874.
$27,500 State bonds redeemed by
Fourth National Bank in the early
part of 1873 by exchanging for softie
other State bonds, issued in 1872, and
not charged to Jones on his accounts
with the State. For this $27,500
credit was. taken 1 by Jones, and the
amount is, by the auditor, cliarged
back to him ou his account. On the
foregoing bonds, interest paid, or
claimed to have been paid by Jones,
amounting to about $25,000, is denied
by the auditor as a proper credit to
Jones. In addition to the foregoing
items of debit, the report farther de
bits the ex-Treasurer with about
$40,000 in gold coupons, paid by the
Fourth National Bank in 1871, and
improperly credited to Jones in
1874. Sundry items of credit claim
ed by Jones, tis not embraced in
credits had to him in his accoants
with the State at the time of his re
moval from office, are denied to him,
but for the most part allowed as right
ful credit. The total indebtedness ot
the ex-Treasurer at the time of his
removal from office, November 25,
as shown by the report, is about
$250,000.

Aaron Burr’s Daughter.
Theodosia Burr, the idolized
daughter of the first conspirator
against the Republic, comes to the
front as regularly as the “ Man in the
Iron Mask,” the author of the letters
of “ Junius” or the writer of “ Beau
tiful Snow/’ The story of her loss
on her passage from Charleston to
New York in .1812 has often been
told, but the mystery sut rounding
her death has never been, solved, un
less a recent discovery may do so.
All that was known was that the
ship on which she sailed was lost and
never afterwards heard of. No one
knew whether it foundered at sea or
was wrecked on some part of the
coast. Colonel J. II. Wheeler, in
an address before the Carolina II s-
torical Society, has perhaps thrown
light on this interesting subject He
stated that an “ exquisite photograph
of the original painting of Theodosia
Burr’’ was in possession of Dr. W.
G. Pool, who resides near Elizabeth
City, in Eastern North Carolina, and
who accounted for its possession bv
remarking that eight or ten years
ago he visited a family near Cape
Hatteras and observed hanging on
the wall an “ exquisite oil painting of
-a beautiful woman.” On inquiry he
was told that it had been discovered
by the roan of the house, then eighty
years of age, with other articles,
when a youth, 011 a vessel that had
been wrecked near Cape Hatteras iu
-a furious storm thfit occurred iu the
Winter of 1812 or 1813, and in
which a|l on board were drowned.
The portrait thus saved, and from
which the photograph has been ta
ken, from its resemblance iu a stri
king degree to Theodosia Burr
Alston, is believed to be that of
Burr’s ill fated daughter. It has
since been sent from North Carolina
to a gentleman iu Washington. And
thus the mystery of her death, it is
thought, is at this late day explained.
It is known that the unaccounted
loss of his daughter greatly afflicted
and depressed Burr in his later life.
