SOUTHERN BANNER. JULY 23> 1878.
Remarks of
,U’I> JK TIUPPK BEFORE MONROE
COUNTY KAHl ASSOCIATION.
Juilgo H. P. Trippc was next in-
troiliuvd, as the man whom Monroe
* 1t:ul always delighted to honor. He
said lie conhl allow no man to go
1 tartli •»* than himself in bragging on
Mon. **- county. Whenever the peo*
of his old county should call
noon him to talk or act tor the conn*
tv, his services were at the disposal of
these people. If anybody loves any
' |ii.>ojile he loves these people. But ns
lie loved them he would claim the
. privilege of talking plainly to them.
lie had some truths to bring home to
i them, he would not tell them to
' wear the cap because it fits, but to
i throw it away and wear it no longer.
If he stood as a prophet talking to
1 the people, he would tell them there
were two grand faults of the age;
lirst, there is not-enough regard for
the obligation of contracts. The
people must recover ihe lost ground
in this direction and return to the
" former condition ol affurs, when a
J ,nun’s bond was his promise. The
other fault is want of regard for
home, for proper homes, lie said he
would beg them all to think of this
No country would prosper until
there exists a pride auJ love of home.
Where there existed no love of home,
th-re would he no virtue in the land,
The Grant Programme.
SOME NEW GOSSIP FROM PARIS ABOUT
“ THE MAN ON IIOHSE
BACK.”
[Buffalo Courier’* Pari* Correspondence.]
Gen. Grant is represented as very
mad at the summary dismissal of his
friend, General Torbcrt, from the
consulate-generalship here. Those
who enjoy the ex-Presidvul’s intima
cy say that he is putting all these
slings and arrows of outrageous for
tune in a “ black book,” and that
“ when he comes to his own again ”
he will get even with the Hayes
crowd. By “coining to his own ** it
is understood that Grant firmly be
lieves that he is sure of renomination
and election. His son, the piquant
Jesse, confided to a friend the other
evening that “pa can be President
whenever he wants to; he gets a
bushel of letters a day from home
saying that the people eau’t get along
without him in the office.” The
confiding Jesse only put in words
what that peouliar group of time
servers about the ex-rihg President
hints. If it were left to his own vo
lition. Grant would return to America
to-morrow. Alter the first uovelty
there is nothing in the old world to
interest a irian of his sort. He con
fessed artlessly to ah acquaintance iu

wrong and error. House is *• nil and
iu all.'' There can lie no successful
f irms unless there are successful
homes. Ha would urge the people
to beautify and ornament their
homes with flower yards, good fen
ns, and many other things which
would be useful and ornamental.
The homes of old England are the
l
foundations of England’s progress
hiul greatuess. To our people, es
pecially to the ladies, this is the
grandest i question they can grapple
vith. Any one can make home
tyoautifu!. Wc can gather the beau
itul flowers of the forest and plant
hem around our homes. Laziness is
in* grand trouble in the way. We
raste enough from laziness and inat-
•ntion to adorn the houes, He
ruulJ do something to beautify home
that as the baby grows up he will
. End something to admire.
On the question of agriculture he
thought he was competent to talk,
alk about pelti-foggirg lawyers and

•ojilc there were more pettifoging
id quack farmers than anything
An incompetent lawyer may

ml the doctor may be equally un-
irtnnate, hut the quack farmer

horn all of us sprang and to which
e must go for the maintainance of
mr lives He would say, wake up,
id go aboard the car of progress ;
ttandon laziness; follow’ what aci-
bce and common sense teach. You
|ust not say you know more than
progressive man. While he was
skilled fanner, the Judge could
two things: he made a cotton
op and sold it for the highest price
?er paid for cotton, and afterwards
ught some cotton and lost more

J.
In conclusion ho w’ould say:
rouse not by a nervous effort that
mid soon expend its force, but by
ig continued effort. To the people
would say, get up and be active
ve some boauty about the home-
ad; think constantly about the

social distinction—wAs something of
an excitement, lie was entertained
at a very loud dinner at the Grand
Hotel, paid for by contributions,
thirty francs a ticket, and was then
passed from house to house as a
reigning lion. A few journalistic
claquers attached to the persona]

and threw the shadow of these fes

America with the social status in a

Cost of Fencing.—Sni«l the Hun
John Russell, at the recent Farmer’s
Institute, at Montiuello: “ There are
42,164,000 rods of fence in Iowa,
which is worth, at filly cents per rod
—a very low estimate, too - the nuig<
uificent sum of twenty-one millions
ot dollars. Jones county alon», at
the last census, had 1,060,896 rods of
fence, which, at fifty cents per rod
cost over $500,000 more than all the
live stock in the county. Anything
that can successfully reduce this
large amount of lied-up capital will
