The memorial of the mer
chants of this city to’ Congress,
was read last evening ac the
Tontine Coffee-Houle ro a
crowd and highly respectable
meeting of the merchants, cal
led for the purpose, and unani
muufly approved of. This me
morial takes a very extensive
view of the situation of the mer
chants of the United States, in
consequence of the late deten
tion of colonial produce by
Great Britain—Of the treatment
which our vefTcls have received
from the unlicenced armed veft
ftls or the beihgerant Powers—
And of the defenceiefs Irate of
cur ft a-port towns. The me
moru l is certainly one of the
moft able productions of the
kind we ever read—it exp relics
in a mild, yet firm and digni
fied manner, the grievances of
an highly injured people, and
asks in a tone net easily to be
refufed, for red reds from the
government- cf their country.
