z The Cleveland Progress. Entered at lint I’oHt-oflieo at Cleveland a* Second-dune Mat) Matte", ,)nn. 2!l, ".12. Offleinl Organ of Wltitejeonnly W. B. WOODWARD, Editor and Prop'r. Cleveland, Ga„ lay 2d, 1892 JUST FROM THE SENATE.. Washington, May, ifi, i K92. Mr. Harrison lias Intel more troulilo in Ilia official family, us if the Blaine shadow, which crosses his path at, every turn, were not cross enough for any ordinary president to hear. Sec retaries Foster and Elkins who have jointly managed Mr. Harri son's campaign for renomiiinlion up to this time, now threaten to desert him and east their influ ence with the opposition. The cause of this revolt is the vet urn to this country of John C. Now, who conics for the purpose of taking a full control of the Ilar- iison forces, making Foster and Elkins merely subordinate figures during the remainder of the fight. Jf the throat is carried out, goodhyo to Mr. Harrison’s hopes. The sudden death of,Senator Barbour, of Virginia, on Satur day moling from heart failure, is a loss to his state, his party and his country, that will long lie felt. As a party leader he lets no superior in his state and but few in his nation ; as a senator his long experience in public life gave him a prestige which the ablest men can no other way ac quire, a prestige that was valua- * bio to his state and to his party, and which was never used for his personal advantage. Personally he was us Senator McMillan said, “My ideal of a perfect gentle man," mid was liked by all who know him. Funeral services wore hold over his remains this afternoon in the soiiato chamber. The iiainos of Gov. McKinney and ex-Gov. Fitahugh Lee are spoken of as candidates for the vacancy in the senate. Chairman Springer is again haixl at work,•and ho expects , \ scvcrul ne*i*fiiriff hi MB, including t iffee copper and iron ores and a roductoii in the duty on steel rails to bo reported to the house shortly. Free binding-twine is finding much favor among tho re publican senators from the west and n movement is on foot to yoke it with free, refined sugar and push it t hrough tho senate There is a marked ditl’crenco of opinion among democratic sena tors as to to the policy the party should at this time adopt in deal ing with appropriations for now vessels for the navy. Senator Gorman takes the ground that the country should have a navy to bo proud of, and that the cry of economy should not pre vent tho spondin-r of a liberal amount of money in building new ships. Senator Mills oil the oth or, hand, says lie is opposed to a government which would to day, if it.were a private corpora, tion, be in the hands of a receiv er, spending money that is not in its treasury, for something that is absolutely not necessary, and fa rm’s striking out all appropria tions for new ships and lettin the government come back to the lesson that governments like in dividuals, must like within their incomes. There was tho same difference of opinion when the naval appropriation bill now be ing considered by the senate was before the house, and the bill as passed before the house was a compromise between those who wished to appropriate a very large amount for new vessels and those opposing it to make any appropriation for that purpose So far tho much advertised bat tle-royal between civil service commissioner Roosevelt and post master general Wannamaker have got no further than tho harmless “you’re another” stage. Secretary Foster has at last concluded to assume the respon sibility for the expenoitnre of im migrant head money upon the im provements on Ellis’ Island, and, in a letter that will probably bring forth a reply, he has so in formed the house and senate com mittees on immisrration, which are jointly investigating the sub ject. llis assuming the responsi bility for this expenditure of sev eral hundred thousand dollars does not, however make the ex penditure legal, as he may learn before congress gets through with the investigation. Governor KcKinley sneaked in fo town last week for t he purpose of conferring with some of his friends who want him to formally enter the presidential race, and the fact that he tried to keep his visit a profound secret by failing to register at the hotel, and that he neglected to call on either Mr. Harrcson or Mr. Blaine makes it look ns though the Major was lending a willing ear to the siren voices of the anti-Harrison men. Said Senator Hill to a friend: “!f I attempted to deny every newspaper “fake” that is printed about me, I should have no time for anything else. You may al ways put down as untrue any newspaper statement pretending to say what my future actions will be upon any question. I see no reason why the public should believe that any public man would be so silly as to announce through the newspapers his inten tions, thus giving his opponent an opportunity to defeat his plans; but evidently the editors of smile papers believe they do, or they would not print the columns of nonsense about the presiden tial candidates that are sent out from Washington.” DEMOCRATIC NASS MEETING. A mass meeting of the democ racy of White county is hereby •ailed to meet in the court house in Cleveland on the first Tuesday in June next, by to o’clock A. M. for tin' purpose of electing dele gates to the congressional demo cratic convention which meets in Gainesville, July lit, next, to nom inate a candidate for congress and also to elect delegates to the democratic convention which meets later in Alania, to nomi nate a candidate for governor and for each of the statehouse of ficers. Lot all democrats lie on hand and aid in the work and perfect a permanent organiza tion of the party. John J. Kimskv, Cli’m. Dom. Ex, Com. Paid Advertisement. A RESPONSE' TO THE HIT DOG BY PLOW BOY. Mu. Editor: Some time ago I saw proper to write a short, piece in behalf of the oppressed laboring people, and in my do duration of the truth, wounded the inuermnn of one who assumes tne name of Blow Boy No. 2, hence he notified the people in the item that he would respond to Blow Boy tho first, which made many anxious to seo tin response, but have seen nothing as yet, except a piece written in a way, ho hoped to personate some wrongs of one who he be lieved to bo Blow Boy the first, by taking the privilege of asking him several questions. One was, “Did he know of a father that was liiri ng his son at 50 cents per day,” and many other questions as the readers well know. First, I know of a father that is imp porting his son and family and is receivingtl;e son’s labor; 1 know of a man that sold washing ma chines in White county for one of God’s mouth pieces, Mr. 1 know of a man that went with the same machine hav ing partnership with a man that might have been a brother to Blow Boy No. 2; 1 know a man that has taught an interest, rule, which gives everybody satisfac tion; I do not know a man that ever trailed a tan right over the mountain and lifting a man out of all his goods, and being pur sued by him; 1 know a man that has a large family of children that requires of them if one indulges in a wrong that the rest does not follow pursuit, and if Blow Boy No. 2 will ask all those children what kind of a father they have they will all tell him that they have au industrious, truthful, so ber, moral and confidential fath er,.and one that never fails to give good counsel; and if Blow Boy No. 2 will ask one of these sons lie will tell him that a sou of Blow Boy No. 2 tricked or swin dled him out of two or three hun dred dollars; and if he will ask another one of these sons he will tell him that this same son tried to sell his land and property on a judgment that lie obtained by lie-swearing; and Blow Boy the first is not ashamed to own be fore the whole world that lie has been forced to hard, toiling labor all the days of hi.s life; and lie is not ashamed to ' wn that he has worked his children, both girls and boys, side-by-side with him, and denied himself anil children many luxurious nutriments, also denied them of fine appurrcl, in order that they might not live on the labor of others; and by so- doing he has accumulated some of the goods of this world, and at the same time some of the hellish, idle drones are laying shemes and plans to gobble up the honest earnings of such people. Now, will Blow Boy No. 2, permit Blow Boy the, first to ask him a few questions? Do you know of a father in White county who ad vised his son to give a lie bill, rather than to suffer the penal ties of the law? Do you know of a mouth-piece of God who is also a lawyer, that got the murdered man’s money to liberate the mur derer? Do you know who got, poor old grand-mu Vickery’s fine mare during t he war? Do you know who got Jim Jackson’s money that was said to be buried on the Andrew Dorsey place? Do you know who was at the head of the killing of the noble old hero, Duke Palmer? Do you known man that collected a two hundred dollar note out of the honora ble old Frank Logan in his life time, and after his death pro posed to collect it again? Do you know a man that, stood in the pulpit at Shoal Creek and prom ised to pay four dollars into .Shoal Creek School liouso anil never paid it? Do you know a man and his son that lay around a monied old gentleman on Mossey Creek, anticipating his death that they might reap the fat thereby? Do you know of a man that told a sick man that his bill would be more if he died than it would if lie lived? Do you know of a man that took a five dollar fee from a man on Shoal Crook and then sold out to another man for fivo dollirs? Now, the readers of Tim Buo- (iKKss all know how this thing all came up. Blow Boy the first was writing on a principle of truth, not intending to hit any certain man, but when the hit dog hallooed I knew there was one hit, and proposed to respond, and 1 would have been proud jA the response if he had liavo r^ sponded on a principle, ’advocat ing his occupation or platform on which he stood ; but his response had reference) to personal acts; therefore, I feel it just and right to feed him with the same food, and as I live in a log cabin I am not afraid to pit h stones with one that lives in a lino glass house. I am sorry that 1 am lead out to do so by a heinous drone, and do not wish to do mi any more. Now, if Blow Boy No. 2 wishes to respond to Blow Boy the first, let him eomo liken man and advocate the position and grounds that he stands on, and then as King Janies said, “Drove his faith by his works.” If he is a politician let him advocate the principal of a polit ician. If he is an aristocrat let him advocate the principle of an aristocrat. If he is a monopoly democrat let him advocate their principles. If he is an extortionate lawyer let him advocate their principles and in terest. If ho is an idle drone, Hood’s Sarsaparilla la a concentrated extract of Sarsaparilla, Yellow Dock. l’lpslssewa, Juniper Berries, Mandrake, Dandelion, and other valuable vegetable remedies, every iuRredlent being strictly pure, and the best of its kind it is possible to buy. If he is a labor er let him advocate the course of tho laborer. As for my part 1 shall defend the cause of the la borer until I die, and desiring that no family on earth should have a living without laboring for it that is able to labor. It is no difi’eveneo to me who it is should famish—let them go. If it starves me and my family let us go, I am on a principle and a principle treats all alike. Blow Boy No. 2 seems to think that the laborer had a mighty cham pion in Blow Boy the first, stand ing with beams in his eyes, pick ing out motes out of other peo ple’s eyes. I only claim a prin ciple and if it cuts me oil’ let me go: Now, brother Blow Boy No. 2, I expect to continue writing in behalf of the laborer on a princi ple of equalization ; hut I do not wish to continue the battle of per sonal acts any longer. This is a shot, apiece and 1 desire to cease the battle. I never fight only in defence, and if you arc willing to cease the fight, as to personality, the fight is over. Now 1 will agree to pray for you and your family that you may never get your living onl’i by the sweat of your faces; and that prayer is extended as wide as the Adam ic family reaches on the earth, but you know the prayers of the wicked availeth no thing; there fore, I will ask you to pray for me and mine as the prayers of the di vinity availeth much. There is a certain brac ing effect in cold air which is lost when the weather grows warmer; and when nature is renewing her youth, her admirers feel dull, sluggish and tired.
