FOE THE CURE OF
AGUE AND FEVER
on
CHILLS AND FEVER.
The proprietor of this celebrated medicine justly
claims for it a superiority over all remedies ever offer
ed to the pu dic tor the safe. certain speedy and per
manent cure of Ague and Fever .or Chills and Fever
whether of short or long standing. He refers to the
entire Western and Southwestern country to bear him
testimony to llie truth of the assertion, that in no c .se
wha'ever will it fail to cure, if the directions are strict
ly followed and oa ried out. In a great many cases a
single dose has neen sufficient for a cure, and whole
famines have 1 een cured by a single bottle, with a per
fect restoration of the general health. It is, however,
prudent, and in every case more cert tin to cure, if its
use's continued in smaller doses for a week or two af
ter the disease has been checked, more especially in
difficult and long s anding cases. Usually, this me.li
cine will not require a y aid to keep the bowels in
good order; should the patient, however, require a
cathartic medicine, after h'v'ng t'ken three or four
loses of tfco Tonic, a single dose of BULL’** VETETA
BLE FAM’LY PI cLS will .be sufficient.

Bull’s Worm Destroyer.
To my United States and World wide Read
ers:
I HAVE received many testimonials from profes
sional and medical men, as my almanacs and y.ri
oys publications have shown, all of which are genuine.
The following from a highly educated and popular
phpslcian in Georgia, is certainly one of the most sen
sible communications I have ever received. Dr. clem
ent knows exactly what he speaks of, and his testimo
ny dtserves to be written in lexers of gold. Hear
what the Doctor says of Bull's Worm Destr per

DR. JOHN BULL—Dear Sir:—l have recently giv
en your “Worm Destroyer” several trials, and find it
wonderfully efficacious. Ithasnot failed in a single
instance, to have the wished-for effect. lam doing a
pretty large country practice, and have daily use for
some article ol ttie kind. lam free to confess that I
know of no remedy recommended by theablest authors
that isso certain and speedy in its effects. On thecon
t.rary they are uncertain in the extreme. My object
in writing you is to find out upon what terms I can
get the medicine directly from you. If I can get it
upon easy terms, I shall use a great deal of it. Jan
aware that the use of such articles is contrary to the
teachings and practice of a great majority of the >ep
ulnr l'ne of M. D.’s, but I see no just cause or good
sense in discarding a remedy which we know to be el
ficient, simply because we may be ignorant of its com
bination. For my part, I shall make it a rule to use all
and any means to alleviate suffering hum n.ity which
I may be able to command—not hesitating because
someone more ingenious than myself may have learn
<l its effects first, and secured the sole right to secure
hat knowledge. However, lamby no mi ans an ad
vocate or supporter of the thousands of worthless nos
trums that flood the country, that purport to cure ail
manner of disease to which humtn flesh is heir.—
Please reply soon, and inform me of your best terms.

Benton Barracks,' Mo., April 30, 1566.
Dr. John Bull—Dear Sir: Knowing the efficiency
of your Sarsaparilla, and the healing: and beneficial
qualities it possetses, I send you the following state

I was wounded about two years a#o —was taken
prisoner and confined for sixteen months. Being
moved so often, my Wounds have not healed yet. I
have not sat up a moment since 1 was wounded. I
am shot through the hips. My general Health is im

have more faith in your 8 irsaparilla than In any thing
else. I wish that that 1s genuine. Please express me

P. S.—The following was written April 39, 1565, by
Mrs. Jenn'e Johnson, mother of Capt Johnson.
DR. BULL—Dear Sir: My hushand. Dr. C. S. John
son, was a skillful surgeon and physician in Central
New York, where he died, leaving the above C. P.
Johnson to my care. At thirteen years of age he had
a chronic diarrhoea and scrofuls, for which I gave
him your Sarsaparilla. IT CURED HIM. I have for
ten years recommended It to many in New York, Ohio,
and lowa, for scrofula, fever g , re , i anf ] Kener ,) debili

A Name in tiie Sand.
Alotje I walked the ocean strand,
A pearlj shell was in m v hand;
I stooped and wrote upon the san J,
My name, the year, the day.
As onward from the spot I passed',
One lingering look behind I cast—
A wave came rolling high and fast,
And washed my lines away.
And so, me thonght, ’twill shortly be,
With every trace on earth of me;
A wave from dark oblivion's sea
Will roll across the place
Where I have trod the sandy shore
Os time, and been, to he no more—
Os me, uiy day, the name I bore,
To leave no track nor trace.
And yet with him who counts the sands,
And holds the waters in his hands,
I know a lasting record stands
Inscribed against my name,
Os all this mortal part hath wrought,
Os all this thinking soul hath thought,
And from these fleeting moments caught
For glory or for shame.
[The foregoing beautiful lines, by Hannah
F. Gould, I find in the “Southwestern Bap
tist,” and have taken the liberty of adding
a few others, which if yon think, worthy a
place, arc at your disposal.]
My sirfs have risen like a mount,
My soul attests the fearful ’count
Against my heart; prolific fount
Os crime against his love.
My thoughts to youthful years I cast,
My virtues all too few ; alas !
Youth spent and gone, the spring time pa3t,
And treasureless above.
These sins are graven as on stone,
The last of which, unwashed, alone
Would ever bar me from God’s throne,
And I should lose my soul.
But when I turn to Jesus’ side,
(The ocean of his love is wide,)
In transports I behold the tide
That makes me clean and whole.
A Fellow Townsman
Communicated.
Mr. Editor ; I have read with pleas
ure the communication of “X.” We
presume the truth of his observations
has never been questioned. Mental
application undoubtedly is productive
of the most beneficial results; but it
must be clearly patent that no induce
ments to such application are held out
in this community. The mind is a
machine.. It may be improved, it may
be kept in perfect order; but its profit
ableness consists only in action. Mo
tion is life. Inertia is not even con
servative, it is decay. The mind is as
a diamond, or a flint—to be profitable
it must be polished, struck. Intellect
ual intercourse has often been com
pared to the contact of diamonds, or
the collision of flint and steel But
intellectual intercourse is wanting.—
Let us presume that one applies him
self as recommended by “X.” Most
G s our young men are engaged iu ac
tive labor; labor that occupies the ma
jor portion of their time. Consequent
ly the moments they are enabled to
devote to the acquisition of knowledge
are brief. This we presume every one
is aware of. Again; every one knows
that excellence is only attained b/
constant application. The moments
at command of young men being brief,
the necessity of consent application
being imperious, it follows that such
application must form their chief em
ployment during leisure moments.—
“Ye cannot serve two masters” —books
and women! Then the young man
must, to a great degree, be removed
from young ladies’ society. Conse
quence: the young ladies vote him
“slow and poky,” (two terms expres
sive of profound contempt.) A ma
jority of young men are solicitous of the
good opinion of the young ladies
Consequence: to obtain it they relin
quish all methods of obtaining solid
information. Secondary ccnsequence:
they vote him “slow and poky” who
acts differently from themselves. Con
sequence: the youug man improving
his time is in a measure, socially iso
lated. But to continue the presump
tion. We suppose the young man has
applied himself--say from sixteen to
twenty-five. If the application has
been at all constant, he will have be
come well grounded in solid informa
tion, and conversant with polite liter
ature. With the accession of strength
comes a desire to use it. Acting on
that desire, our friend enters taat
society from the pleasures of which he
has in a measure been debarred. We
presume he enters the social areua at
Cartersville. We suppose our fiieud
has beeu removed from society His
mind has been engaged in serious, :
slow and laborious work. The conse
quence is its tcue is massive, delibera
tive. His mind, impelled by the laws
of association, naturally reverts to the
sphere in which it has been employed.
Acting upon this, our friend introduc
es literature into the circle in which he
may happen to be. As I before said,
the young ladies vote him “slow, poky
and a boro,” and of a necessity the
empty-sculled popinjays agree. The
young man feels isolated; a proud
isolation I admit, but, hkj all isola
i tious, exceedingly cheerless. Whethe ■
j the opinions lie.d in regard to him, ar
j influenced by a distaste for healths
j übjects, or are clerk3 for ignorance,
I will leave the holders thereof to de-
1 1ermine; but I am assured that every
! one who ha ; noticed has come to the j
conclusion that it is almost impossible
in our younger circles to induce con
versation to turn upon healthy litera
ture. Such being the case, what iu-;
ducemeuts are held out to mental ap
plication? How great art- the induce
ments to a young man to ne lect all
books of solid information—adapting
his mind to the superficial limits' of
those young ladies who detest all men
tal improvement, beyond t e nrt of
small talk—degrading it by abusing it
—burying his Lord’s talent, and living
off that usurer, society! Os course
there are young men who trample such
contemptible opposition, (although
negative;) but there are many who are
influenced, and whose whole after life
will be a page to which to day is an
index. It may not be improper to say
here, that probably, more attention
would be paid to the literary and -so
cial culture of the young by the old,
were Jiey treated differently. In con
versation, not long since, with a lady
of high social and literary culture and
refinement, she remarked, in substance,
that it; ppeared to her that the young
people were disinclined to the company
of older persons. Whether they con
sidered their presence as a rebuke to
folly and levity, she knew not, but they
appeared to consider their presence as
aniutrusiom Prob bly her remarks
were just.
W hen persons of age and experience
are made to feel that their presence is
deemed an intrusion, they very natur
ally consider any interest shown in
those intruded upon to be misplaced
and undeserved. In our humble judg
ment, our great want just now is a lit
erary society, Not one alone for the
male sex, nor one th .t shall sit with
barred doors; nor a debating society,
nor strictly a lyc< urn—but one where
ladies and gentlemen, the young and
old can meet to form a healty literary
tone for our society; where gentlemen,
whose age and culture entitle them to
precedence, may give shape and direc
tion to the labors of those who lion
et tly endeavor to improve their leisure
moments. We have gentlemen among
us whose abil ties are such that they
may exert a mighty influence for good
direction. The young need you, in Ibis
gentlemen, and surely the field is large.
We need healthiuess, clearness and
practicalness in our young social ele
ment; we need temper tnce, sobriety
ana a deep, strong and pennant cul
ture; you represent t..ese conditions,
gentlemen—will you use your leaven ?
