A Murder Trial in Nevada.
“I was sittiug here, said the Jttdg ,
“in t is old pulpit, holding court, and
we were trying a hig wicked-looking
Spanish desperaeju for killing the hus
band of a blight, pietty Mexican wo
man It was a lazy summer day, aid
an awfully long one, and the witness
es were tedious. None of us took any
interest in the trial except that nerv
ous uneasy devil of a woman —because
you know how they love and low
hey hate, and this one had loved her
nusband with all her might, and now
she bail boiled it all down into hate,
and stood there sj it ting it at that Span
iard with her eyes; and I tell you she
would stir me up, too, with a little of
her summer lightning occasionally.—
Well. I had my coat off and heels up,
lolling and sweating, and smoking one
| of those cabbage cigars ti.e San 1 ran
cisco poople used to think were g -od
1 enough for us in those times; and the
lawyers they all had their coats off and
i were smoking and whittling, and the
| witnesses the same, and so was the
prisoner. Well, the fact is, there wan t
any interest iu a murder case then, be
cause ti.e fellow was always brought
in not guilty, the jury expecting him
to do as much for them some time;
and although the evidence was straight
and square again t this Spani ml, we
knew we could not convict him without
seeming to be rather high-handed and
sort of reflecting on every gentleman
iu the community; for there wau’t any
carriages and liveries then, and so the
on y “stylo” there was to keep your
piiva'e grave yard. But that woman
seemed to have her heart set on hang
ing that Spaniard; and you’d ought
to have seen how she would glare on
him a minute, and then look up at me
in her pleading way, and then turn
for the next live minutes to search in
the jury’s faces —and by drop her face
in her hands for just a little while as
if she was ready to give up, but she’d
turn again directly and be as liv and
| anxious as ever. But when tha jury
announced the verdict, ‘Not guilty,
and I told the fellow he was acquitted
and free 10 go, that woman rose up till
she appeared to be us tall and grand
as a seventy-four gun ship, and says
she:
“Judge, do I understrnd you to say
that tins man is not guilty, that mur
dered my husband without any cause
before my owu eyes and my little clnl
dren's, and that all Uus been done ti
him that ever justice and the law can
do ?’
“The sa ne,’ says I.
“And then wliat do you reckon she
did ? \\ liv,. she turned on that smirk
ing Spanish fool like a wildcat, and o it
with a navy and shot him dead in ope.i
court!”
“That was spirited I am willing to
admit."
“Wasn’t it, though ?” said the Judge,
admiringly. “I wouldn’t have missed
it for anything. I adjourned court
right on the spot, and we put on Our
coats and went out and took up a col
lection for her and her cubs, and sent
them over the mountains to their
friends Ah, she was a spirited
wench !”—Gaku y for June.
A Knotty Text.— There was once
an itinerant in \Y est Tennessee, who
possessing considerable natural elo
quence, had gradually become posses
sed of the idea that he was also an ex
traordinary Biblical scholar. Under
this delusion he would very frequently,
at the close of his sermons, ask any
member of Lis congregation who might
have a “knotty text” to unravel, to
speak it, and he would explain it at once
however much it might have troubled
“less distinguished divines.” On one
occasion, in a 1. rge audience, he was
particularly pressing for someone to
propound a text; but no one presum
ing to do so he was about to sit dowu
without an opportunity to show liis
learning, when a chap by the door an
nounced he had a Bible matter of
great ‘‘concern,” which he desired to
be enlightened upon. The preacher,
quite animatedly, professed his will
ingness and ability, and the congrega
tion was in great excitement.
“What I want to know,” said the
outsider, “is whether Job’s turkey was
a hen or a gobler ?”
The “expounder looked confused,
and the, congregation tittered as the
questioner capped the climax by ex
| claiming, in a loud voice:
“I fetched him down on he fust
| question ?”
From that time forward, the prac
| tice of asking for difficult passages
; was discontinued.
