In the name of lruruauit , in the
name of peace, law and good order,
and, above all, in the name of God
and the Christian religion, we trust
Lli.it this community, as if a Set of un
civilized savages, may no longer be in
sulted by this griui jesting and these
incentives to noting in human blood.
God in Heaven knows we have no
sympathy with ike disturbers of the
public peace and violators of tile law
who brought tin’s matter about, but as
a public journalist, having the honor
of the profession at heart, and under
a solemn obligation, as a conservator
of the peace, .as if on oath, to aid in
maintaining the peace and enforcing
the laws, we do most earnestly and
solemnly entreat our cotemporaries to
pause and think what may be the re
sult of these teachings—no matter hew
just may have been the cause that
lead to the death of these .eight liu
man beings be fore they further urge
the people of Alabama, our neighbors,
on to greater scenes of blood. As we
(and our cotemporaries, also, we do
them the justice to say; condemned
Sheridan, the brute, sometime ago, for
his merciless slaughter, of the Piegan
savages, so does tin civilization of the
nineteenth century demand that we
protest, at least, against any furth r
sacrifice of human life on the part of
the people of Alabama.
These things will bring trouble upon
our own Sta.e, the only one with which
the Radicals have yet to deal, and we
very much fear, upon the people of the
entire South, and if considerations oi
humanity, the teachings of Christ aid
nis holy i\ ligion, have no weight, in
curbing the passions of men, we appeal
in behalf of the millions who are to
suffer for these things that this mas
sacre shall cease, or else let our tribu
nals of justice be closed and and our
cuurcht s demolished. If the laws of
Alabama are powerless to protect her
people why, of course, they must pro
tect themselves, and we shall heartily
sustain them in ;.o doing, but let there
be no useless sacrifice ot‘ human life.—

Prussia losing strength. The neutrality
of England will be difficult and perhaps
impossible, and dishonorable should
Holland and Belgium become involved

nn order to make no concession to the
French Government. “Do not be too
much impressed,’ Bismarck continues
‘we are ready. Prolong tire situation,
if possible, to the 20tlr of July.”
The Journale argues from this that
Prussia meant war from the beginning,
and sought only to gain time.
The Emperor will leave Paris to day
for the seat of war. The Prince Im

The Emperor desires this, and the
Empress does not object. The military

The Prussians have entered France

Paris, July 17. —An engagement, is

against Holieuzollern’s candidature;
your majesty has been compelled to
draw the sword. The country is with
you, eager for and long prepared for
the contest. You have awaited and
seized the oc. asion. Yon have raised
to perfection the military organization
of France, and by your care France is
prepared.
The Moniteur says that England is
much concerned for the welfare of Bel
gium. La France and nies the neutrality
of Belgium. The . .oniteur thinks that
England is more uneasy-regarding the
attitude of Prussia than of Prance, re
garding Belgium neutrality.
The Moniteur holds friendly lan

France is willing to support the father
of the king of Portugal for King of

“The weak eatetli herbs,” say3 St, Paul,
so that eighteen hundred years ago the val
ue of medicinal plants was appreciated. In
the Old Testament botanical remedies are
tepeatcdly tecommcndcd, but in no passage
of sacred history is man recommended to
swallow calomel, or blue pill, or any other
mineral preparation, The sick were di
rccted to eat herbs to strengthen them, to
heal them, to restore thorn. In that day the
art of making vegetable extracts was un
known. The herbal medicines were mere
infusious.
It was reserved for a later age to unite tlie
sanitary essences ot tonic, aperient and auti
t illious i o°ts, barks, and plants, with an
active stimulant, ami thus secure their rap
id diffusion through the debilitated or dis
ordered system. The crowning triumph of
this effective mode of concentrating and ap
plying the virtues of medicinal vegetables
was achieved in the production of Hostet
ter’s Stomach Bifters. Never before had a
perfectly pure alcoholic stimulant been
combined with the Expressed juices of the
finest specifics of the vegetable kingdom.—
Never yet, though eighteen years have elap
sed since its introduction, has this great res
torative been equalled.
It is taken at all seasons, in all climes, as
the most potent safe-guard against epidem
ics, as a protection against all unhealthy
exhalations that produce debility or beget:
disease; its a remedy for intermittent aud
other malarious fevers; as uu appetizer; as
a sovereign cure for dyspepsia; as a general
tonic aud invigovant ; a- a gentle painless
aperient; as a blood depurent; as a nervine;
as a cure for bilious affections; as a harmless
anodyne; and as the best defence ok health
under unfavorable circumetances, such as
sedentary pursuits, undue bo fily or mental
exertion, hardship, privation and exposure.

Immediaterclief is the only safeguard against
