A LETTER FROM FLORIDA.
Dear Editor:—Although 1 haven’t
seen a copy of your sheet since leaving
dear Bainbridge I will presume that you
are still moving along nicely with the
work.
I have been in Florida so long now that
have entirely changed my creed from a
thoroughbred Georgia “cracker” to a
genuine Florida “cracker.” [ haye taken
the oath of allegiance to my new land of
fl .were, and as was already climatised,
guess I will remain a Floridian indefinite
ly. We farmers down here are shipping
cuonmbers, tomatoes, watermelons and
b ackberries to the yankees “up North,”
aud looking to them tor our bread and
meat, Mr. Armour furnishes us in sar-
diues, potted ham and canned beef when
we are able to pay him for it.
Fish are in abundance down here but
hard to oateh. They have been tried so
much till they know the game as well as
the fisherman. Sea turtle are oaught at
Cedar Key in great numbers. They are
white gophers and much larger than the
colored gophers.
virtue which caused the John Oak'
hursts and the “outcasts of Poker Flat”
to depart from thence and die of cold
and starvation on the snow bound road
to Sandy Bar. There are no "Oak-
hursts” nor “Uncle Btllys” In Pokur
Flat today, and when the stranger
makes the slow descent and suddenly
by a sharp turn In the trail comes upon
the famous camp be finds In that hud
dle of cabins little to remind him of the
Poker Flat of 1852.
The famous slope 'presents almost a
picture of utter ruin. There are but
eight persons living to tbe old town,
while a hundred dead ones sleep In the
cemetery. 8ojne of the graves are
marked with wooden headboards, some
with stakes, but many bore nothing
above them. Nearly all of them were
laid to rest without religious rites save
a Bible reading by old Charlie Pond,
who, though a professional gambler,
was selected for the religious office
owing to his excellent voice end ora
torical ability.
In 1853 and 1854 there were 2.000
souls in Poker Flat and 15 stores 5 ho
tels, 3 dance halls and 7 gambling
bouses. There Is but one man left to
day of that original company. lie Is an
old and grlssled veteran, who delights
to tell how In 1850 a circus came to
town and sold 1,500 tickets of admls-
slon at 520 each.—W. M. Clemens In
Bookman.

ll is with a sad heart that I an
uounce tbejdeath of our ranch beloved
brother, Willie II. Anders, who de
parted this life June 17th, 1901, aged
about 64 yeais. He had suffered
sometime with Bright’s disease but
was confined to bis bed only a short
time before his death.
He leaves a devoted wife and two
sons, Lee Anders, of Texas, aud Jim
mie Anders, of Faoevtlle, to mourn
his death. He was surrounded by a
host of kind friends aud relatives,
each anxious to giye him relief when
God mercifully sent an angel to
break the slender thread of life and
took him home to rejoice forever
Byron more, free from sorrow and pains.
He leaves au only sister, Mrs. John
Maxwell, of Calvary, and a host
of other relatives and friends
mo irn theur Iobs. Weep not, dear
wife, children, relatives aud friends,
he cannot come back to us but we
can’go to hun by being faithful fol
lowers of Christ.
Best In pea -e. thou noble fattier,
for Ood’4 will must be done;
Tliou art gone, but not forgotten,
In tbe minds of every one.
Yet ag tin we hope to meet thee,
When the cores of life have bed;
Then 111 heaven a Joy to greet thee,
Where no farewell tears are xlied.
