President,
The public roads are usually taken
by intelligent observers as about the
best indices of the character and
prosperity of tin- people in the re
gion through » iiioli tuey pass. The
neglect of lucir *vn l.-> is justly con
sidered evidence ut poor business
sense and luck of thrill on the part
of the imputation which is most de
pendent upon t i'-iu.
One of the nm-i hopeful signs of the
south’s progress is tne increased at
tention to roads mid their steadily
improving condition. The general
condition of roads in the south is so
much better now than it was ten
years ago that the transportation of
crops in this section to market or to
railway lines costs now many mil
lions of dollars less than it did be
fore theso improvements were made.
Every good road is an object les
son that causes the building of others
and where real road improvement
once begins it is almost sure to con
tinue. Tennessee has done much in
road building during the past three
years and is entering upon a well or
ganized campaign of general road
improvement.
The Good lioads Association in
that Btato has a large membership of
representative and practical men in
every part of the state, representing
all lilies of business.
The first convention of this asso
ciation will be held at Nashville, be
gum ing October 8th.
Nearly every county in the state
will be represented and the cause of
good roads will probablv be substan
stasitielly promoted. Hoad building
experts from the agricultural depart
ineut At Washington will attend the
the convention. There will bead
dresses on the cost and merits of va
nous methods of roid construction
The discussion and interchange of
views that will be had at the con
vention will surely result in much
good.
We hope to see soon in Georgia
such a good roads revival as is going: f-°d Liver Oil .
