BOOMINQ SOUTHERN TEA.
There ave practical and well in
formed men who predict that a few
years hence millions of pounds of ex
cellent tea will be produced annually
in the south Atlantic states.
Nearly a quarter ot a century ago
Mr. Le Due, then federal commis
sioner of agriculture, endeavored to
arouse interest in the possibilities of
tea culture in South Carolina.
The proposition was ridiculed away
without being accorded anything like
a fair trial.
But the idea it emodied was not
crushed out, and the profitable pro
duction of good tea in South Carolina
is now a demonstrated success. It is
certain also that there are large areas
in Georgia and other southern states
where tea of as fine quality as that
now sent to market from South Caro-' Lading, Fia}
lina Can be grown. Steam mills, Ga. Lower Estlffanulga.

Secretary Wilson, of the agricul
tural department, has almost unlimit
ed faith in this industry for the south.
He is a fanner who has made a great
success on his own fields, and is not
to be carried away into unreasonable
experiments. He believes in south
ern tea because he has seen it grow
ing, has sold at prices that paid the
producer handsomely, and has tasted
it and found it good.
Secretary Wilson is therefore us
ing every means at his command to
extend the tea industry that is al
ready well established in South Caro
lina.
At the cabinet meeting last Friday
he made au earnest and practical talk
on this subject, iu which lie said:
‘Good tea can undoubtedly be
grown in that state, and perhaps else
where in this wide and varied coun
try; but can it be produced as a com
mercial success, or must we be pre
pared to listen to a series of tedious
arguments for subsidizing another
unprofitable industry?”
The evidence that tea can be grown
successfully iu a large part of South
Carolina and the reasonable assur
ance that like results can be obtained
in other regions of the south will
destroy eyery argument that can be
raised ia favor of a bounty on tea
raising. Wherever it is believed that
this industry can succeed in the south
experiments should be made to de
termine whether itcan or not. Where
the conditions are favorable tea grow
ing will pay, and where they are
fatAls to the commercial suceess of
the crop it should not be attempted
That there are many thousands of-
acres in South Carolina on which tea
can be grown profitably cannot be
doubted, for the thing is being done.
A number of tea planters have made
money there for several years past
and are steadily enlarging their pro
duction. A syndicate recently bought
4,000 acres of land in the southeast
ern part of that state for the purpose
of establishing a great tea planta
tion.
The market for South Caromla tea
is practically unlimited. One dollar
and even a dollar and a half a pound
is readily paid for the best grades of
this tea. and some farmers haye sold
their entire product for two or three
years ahead. There are great pros
pects for tea culture in the south,
and we would like to see it tried in
telligently in south Georgia.—At
