The good roads movement is now
moving in Georgia.
The great Pan-A merman Exposi
tion closed Saturday, as a financial
success the great show has been
classed a failure.
The Quitman Free Press, in 28
years old and Miss Edna Cain, its
editor is much younger, we presume
—sweet sixteen.
It is a significant fact that the
Confederate Veterans at their recent
Macon reunion requested a revision
of the pension rolls of the State.
The estimated naval appropriation
increase of $90,000,000 to he made
at the next session of congress is no
sign that the people take to water.
That Depot bill has again bobbed
up. The people of Atlanta should
he reminded that it is “consistency,”
(and not “per i leuoy,,) “thou art a
jewel.”
Those who attended the Elks Car
nival in Macon last week pronounce
it the best fair Macon lias ever had.
A good many from the county were
in attendance.
Six cents for cotton is better than
five, hut it knocks an awful hole v in
•the pocket of the farmer who lias
been forced to pay the advance prices
for far.n labor this year.
The average Georgia darkey when
he sits down in his comfortable cabin
to a mess of “Inters” and brown
baked possum, doesn’t bother his
head about the propriety of Hooker
Washington dining with the presi
dent. He is content with his lot and
faro.—Thotniisville Times Enterprise.
That continued fool idea of patri
otism is tiring the country to an
alarming extent. A lull is to ho in
troduced at the next congressional
session to 1 nve a year’s salary of
$50,000 given Mrs. McKinley as was
done in the cases of Lincoln and
Garfield. The president’s wife cer
tainly doesn’t need this aj propriation
in voiw of her present estate and it
would therfore ho a useless and tin
necessary squandering of the people’s
money. At the same time it could
add i othing to the patriotic expres
sion already made.
As to what will he the Ultimate
findings of the Court of Inquiry
which lias been investigating the
charges against Hear Admiral Schley,
is. a hard matter to surmise as the
court has so far given no intimation
that would point to a decision. The
fads remains true that the Admiral’s
enemies have left no stone unturned
to bring about Ins conviction. The
public have been kept pretty well
potted by the press, and if the ques
tion were left to their decision there
would he a hasty acquittal The
court lias absolutely failed to sub
stantiate anyone or more of the
charges preferred.
In the interests of our farmers,
our merchants, our timbermon and
our teachers, in fact, in the interest
of every citizen of Decatur county,
the Search Light proposes to wage a
continuous warfare for better public
roads. Our columns are now and
will continue to be open for a dis
cussion of this important question.
If you think you have an argument
to offer against good roads and you
art* not afraid to place it before the
public tire, why fire in. The Search-
Liglit will be more than pleased to
furnish the opportunity for your pa
rading your fallacious ignorance be
fore the public. But good roads
m.ist. come, hear ye?
WHAT OUR PENSION REPORTS SHOW'.
We are indebted to lion. B. B-
Bower. Jr., for a copy of the Pension
Commissioner’s report for the year
1901, from which we glean the fol
lowing interesting facts in connec
tion with the pension system of the
the state.
There are now on the rolls 11804
pensioners, and an increase over the
roll of 1900 of 978.
Total amount paid in 1901, $095,-
385 or an increase of $18,285.
Lost from Widows Koll, 17 5,
thc'chy saving m money of $10,000.
Increase in indigent roll, 532, an
increase over previous year, $31,890.
Loss from invalid and Disabled
Koll, 55, and a saving of_$3,105.
To this class was paid $19,875.
The following estimates are made
for the requeirmeuts ot the year 1902
and will give some idea as to the
continuous increase m the rolls:
Disabled soldiers, added to roll,
93. Estimated loss from roll, 42.
Amount necessary to pay $190,000.
Added to Widows Old Koll, 14.
Estimated loss by death, etc., 134.
Necessary amount to pay tins class,
£200,000.
Added to roll of Indigent Soldiers
1430. Estimated loss by death and
etc., 385. Necessary amount to pay
ttiis class, $302,500.
Indigent widows eligible under
acts of last Legislature, 1,380. Es
timated loss from death, etc., 80.
Necessary amount to settle claim of
this class, $78,000.
From these figures we get the esli
mated total to he raised for the
liquidation of ptaision claims for the
year 1002, $830,500, or an increase
oyer 1901 of $135,115.
Reference to the figures shows an
increase in the pensions in 1901 over
the proceeding year as $18,285 which
amount is less than one seventh the
increase in the amount for 1902 over
that of 1901, .This phenoniinal in
crease is what probably led the Gov
ernor to suggest the idea of retrench
ment on the part of the legislature.
No doubt many of the pensioners on
the rolls are really deserving and
snob should Im given the assistance
to be derived from pensions but our
officials and law makers cannot he
too careful in dealing with this im
portant question, m order that the
lists may stand for the really deserv
ing ones only. No one would rob
the (Jonfe derate soldieror Ins widow
hut at the same tr.uc no one should
he allowed to impose on the indul
gent and patriotic taxpayer of the
laud.
The house began work to-day with
a consideration of the bill to provide
that no one shall he liable for dama
ges in eases a here they levy an exe
cution against property not belong
ing to the defendant, unless it shall
appear that the levy was made with
out probable cause. This measure
was drawn by Mr. llowell, ot Mori
wether at the last session and favor
ably reported by the committee, and
on Monday iasi set for the special
order to-day immediately after the
confirmation of the journal. Speech
es for and against the measure were
made by its author and by Mr. Bow
er of Decatur, respectively, and lat
ter triumphed, the hill receiving on
ly 69 votes.— Atlanta Journal Get
30th.
We haven’t any free advice to of
fer the Legislature at this time, hut
the dear people have their eyes se
renely set upon the retrenchment
idea suggested by the Governor in
Ins annual message to that body.
Hie legislator who fails to retrench,
shall dig a trench for the reception
of ins political'carcass in the next
election time. The voter is already
entrenched and will everlastingly
appropriate the fellow wlioappropri
ates the people’s money.
