would suggest that we, the citizens
of Bainbridge settle the question of
candidates in a white primary. This
would put the contest on a higher
plans, it would insure the election
of men whose competency to govern
would be considered rather than
their .influence with “the balance of
power.”
Any candidate who would not be
willing to abide by the result of such
a primary, certainly would not be
worthy of the meanest office within
the gift of the city.

GROWTH OF THE UNITED STATES.
Aecordiug to Sir Robert Griffin,
the well known English statistician,
the increase of the United Slates in
population during the century ]'ist
ended has been greater than that ot
any other country in the world. l|a
1800 the population of the United
States was 5,000,000; in 1900 it bad*
grown to be 76,000,000.
Compare the inurease of the Uni.
ted Stales to the increases of otlie-
countries. France increased from
25.000. 000.to 40,000,000; Germany
from 20,000,000 to 55,000,000; the
English speakiug persons ot the
British empire from 15,000,000 to
55.000. 000.
Both Russia and Great Britain
can show a greater population than
thn United States aud a greater ins
orease in population during the cen
tury just entered, if all the subjects
belonging to there empires are taken
into consideration aud the count not
limited to those who speak English.
If all the subjeets are counted the
Russian empire nas a population of
185.000. 000. having increased to that
figure from 40,000,000 in 1800, and
the British empire has a population
of 375,0000,000. If the 10,000,000
Filipinos mid the Hiwaiiaus and
Porto Ricans are added to our 7C,-
000,000 we can lake a step forward
toward rivaling the figures of Russia
and Great Britain, and if we keep on
increasing by adding to domains oth
er countries teeming with population
that we make subject to ourselves at
the same rate us during the past three
years will in in a short time be able
to catch up with these empires of
E irope. It is q lestiouable, however,
whether a country does not weaken
itself ultimately by the addition of
alien peoples, however spluudid such
accretions at first seOm.
Sir Robert Griffin concedes tiiat
during the coming century the Un-i
ted States will outstrip all the Euro
pean countries in growth and popu
lation as well as in industrial devel
opment and wealth. The immense
advantage that the United States has
oVer the other nations is that i‘> pro
duces iis own food supply and for
eign trade is oot necessary, but only
a means of increasing wealth. The
great reason ot the present tariff agi
tation in Europe is that the .Euro
pean countries have to depend on
other countries, for food, and eauh is
afraid the other will in some way
shut her out of the means of Subsist-^
ence. Thu independence of the Uni
ted Stales from providing her own
food aud the plentiful ness of land
are the two causes which will enable
this country, in the century that has
just begun to forge ' ahead of all
rivals—Houston, Texas, Post.
