as Becond-class matter.

lUiNiiimxiK. Ga., Dec. 7. 1901.
Sunshine glistens unto you,
For you falls the rain and dew,
Over you the skies are blue,
Be content.
All God's earth is green and fair,
Birds are singing everywhere,
Be content.
Over the shadow of the night
Bests a diadem of light,
Where the stars are shining bright
Be content.
So in sorrow lurks a good
That is little understood,
Be cuntent.
—Exchange.
Trtfcru’a nothing short about tin
President’s message.
An Exchange hopes there wont be
a hung jury in the Schley case.
“Good roads indicate good citizen
ship,” says the Washington Post-
Cotton is climbing as a result of
the recent government estimate of
the yield.
The opponents of Mr. Wright’s
dispensary measure have about con
cluded that he has gone crazy again.
Our readers will excuse us for no
publishing the president's message,
as we are running one continued
story.
There are those wiio feel that the
statu should settle with her public
school teachers before that depot is
Vrdoted.' •
Baiabridge Jins had her street fair
and carnival. A big time is the
general verdict.—Quitman Adver
tiser.
A Chicago woman who has given
birth to 14 children in seven years is
suing for a divorce and attests -that
marriage is a failure.
Queen Willielmina nnd Prince
Henry have forgotten their differ
ences.nnd pence again ruigns iu tho
royal house. Thu prince's debts will
kc paid.
An exchange thinks that the in
numerable bills no« T teforo congress
will not materially decrease the
number of hill; that will roll around
at the end ol the year.
Two hills are now before the
United Stntes Senate for the construc
tion of the Nicaraguan Cannl. It is
estimated that it will take eight years
to complete the canal.
For five days beginning Dee. 17th,
Dothan, Ala., will have a Business
Men’s Free Street Fair and Carni
val. Excursion rates on all roads
and large crowds will attend.
Gov. Candler is being urged by
the opponents of the Wriglit dispen
sary bill to veto ttio measure. The
governor has given out no informa
tion as to what course he will pur
sue.
Under tho rotation system it will
be Decatur county’s time to furnish
the uexl stale senator from tbe eighth
district, and both the present repre
sentatives of that county iu the low
er house, Menara. Bower and Monroe,
aro avowed candidates.— Miller Co.,
Liberal.
A mister moody from massauhu-
setts has introduced n bill m con
gress to inquire whether elections
are fair in the south. Let mr. moody
extend his inquiry to some of the
northern slates. We have as fair
elections down here as are had in
the north, moody ought to go way
back and sit down right flat.—Times-
Enterprise.
GOOD RhASS COKVEt TlON
The following delegates have been
appointed by Governer Candler to
represent Decatur county at the
Goods Hoads convention to lie held
in Atlanta Ga., Dee. lltb, 12th, 13th,
the following were appointed Messrs
S. Bussell Brinson, J. L. Donalson
mid W. W. Pearce.
Pruciii’al demonstrations in good
road building will he made by the
National good loads association and
it is hoped that inucl) good will re
sult from the convention.
It is not known how many of the
delegaic* appointed from this coun
ty will attend. However it possible
they should all do so, as there is no
more important measure before the
people of Decatur county today than
that of better public roads.
For the past few years this section
of Geoigia, and especially this conn
tv has come into notice. By her re-
Isoureefiil soil, delighted climate and
| all natu-nl advantages we lead them
all, and it is an unfortunate fact that
our poor roads are retarding our pro
gress more than any one thing other.
Common sense teaches that with
the influx of iraigrarvts to thisgeclion,
those more progressive and aggres
sive citizens will seek communities
where good roads are to be found;
while the opposite class—Those who
content themselves with those sur
roundings and advantages which cost
the least trouble and expense will
crowd down upon us. In conse
quence, while our neighbors with
goodroads secure tho 'cream of the
imigration, we must take the dregs.
The best is none too good for De
catur, whether it applies to public
oads or to the class of imigration
dependent thereon. Give us’ better
public roads and more of ’em.
Ono of the biggest Tom fool
measures which have been intro
duced during the present session of
the general assembly is one b/ Rep
resentative Miller to prohibit the
attendance upon public schools, by
children whose fathers have failed
to pAy poll tax. If wo understand
the true mission of the public school
system, it is to offer advantages to
children whose parents for any cause
fail to give them an education. The
failure of the parent to perform his
duty should not rob the child of the
advantages of the school room. Such
legislation would not only be unfair
to the child, but is too narrow and
too puny for a broad-minded set of
men to consider.
The news from Atlanta is not very
encouraging to the public school
teachers of Ga. With a present de
ficiency of $74,000, and a promised
deficiency for next year of $163,000,
making a total of $237,000. The
state now owes the teachers of the
state over $1,000,000, which must he
paid nut of the funds provided. It is
hoped that some way may he opened
up foi the future prompt payment
of the teachers.
