FOR CORONER,

age of about 81,400.
It is the .concensus of opinion that
Mr. Bowen made honest mistakes
with no intention of defrauding any
one. His moral record is without
stain and since he lias been iu this
community lie lias been known as
man with frugal, inexpensive habits.
Mr. Bowen and ins family have
the sympathy of tho entire commun
ity and a number of his friendo have
expressed a willingness to raise
fund to pay the shortage.
It is generally belleyed that after
a thorough investigation the short
age will lie reduced to some extent
Passing of lhe Wheel.
The convention of tlie League of
American Whellinen was hold nt
Tovringlon, Conn., a few clays ago
and is reported to have been mueh
like a funeral. From reports made
to tho convention it appears that the
membership of the league in 1898
was 102,000, now it is only 10,500—
a falling off of nearly 90 per cent.
In that year there wire fifty tiew-
pap'Ts in tlie United States printed
in tlie cycling interests. Now them
is just ono. As for clubs, in Boston,
for instance, there were fifty-three
four years ago. Now there is not
one. The trade itself, although man
aged by tlie trust, is rapidly going
topieces. Thu secret of all this as
that tho fad has ceased and other
fads have taken its place. Those
who rode for amusement or because
“ everybody else does,” have quit,
and the use of the wheel is cou f med
to tlie few who wish to save tune in
getting to and from work or to enjoy
the benefit of the exercise. These,
however, are not many. The day of
riding for pleasure lias passed.—Ex
